  • The strength and freeze-thaw test were carried out in order to use recycled aggregate as crushed aggregate in concrete. The recycled concrete had a lower flexture and compressive strengths than ordinary concrete, but the inclusion of fly ash shows similar results in both concretes. The resistance of freeze-thaw was strongly influenced by W/C ratio, content of recycled aggregate and fly ash, and it was also found that the resistance was higher when W/C ratio and fly ash content was lower. and was superior when replacement level of recycled aggregate reached to 80%.

  • It is true that aggregate strength is usually not a factor in normal concrete strength because, the aggregate particle is several times stronger than the matrix and the transition zone in concrete. In other words, with most natural aggregates the strength of the aggregate is hardly utilized because the failure is determined by the other two phases. But aggregate characteristics that are significant to concrete technology include porosity, grading or size distribution, moisture absorption, shape and surface texture, crushing strength, elastic modulus, and the type of deleterious substances present. Therefore, in the area of high strength concrete, concrete is much more influenced by properties of aggregate. This experiment is performed to investigate how kinds of aggregare influence on the workability of high strength concrete. In this experiment, four types of aggregate is used, that is crushed river aggregate, crushed stone, recycled aggregate of low strength and recycled aggregate of high strength. In this study, we scrutinize a fundmental study on the workability of high strength concrete according to kinds of aggregate.

  • The recycling of demolished concrete as an alternative source of coarse aggregates for the production of new concrete can help to solve the growing waste disposal crisis and the problem of the depletion of natural aggregates. The purpose of this study is to investigate the chloride migration of recycled aggregate concrete containing pozzolanic materials by the chloride migration coefficient. The specimens were made with recycled coarse aggregate at various replacement ratios (10, 30, 50%) and metakaolin, blast furnace slag, and fly ash is replaced for recycled concrete with a mixing ratio of 20%. The major results are as follows. 1) The compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete containing pozzolanic materials increases as the curing age and chloride diffusivity decreases. 2) When the replacement ratio of recycled coarse aggregate is 30%, the chloride migration coefficient of recycled concrete containing blast furnace slag or metakaolin that shows a value similar to or lower than that of plain concrete at all ages.

  • In order to use a recycled aggregate concrete for precast concrete box structures, the structural behaviors should be analytically and experimentally evaluated. In this study, full-scale precast concrete box structures are manufactured using the recycled aggregate (30% replacement) and natural aggregate. Then, the flexural failure test and shear failure test as well as water leakage lest for the structures arc carried out. First of all, test results of compressive strength show that recycled aggregate concrete is only 4% lower than normal concrete. In the flexural and shear failure test, the structural performances of precast box using the recycled aggregate concrete are 95% of the capacities of normal precast concrete box or more. Especially, the water leakage test shows that leakage pressure of recycled concrete box is more than the critical value, 60kPa, as well as 9% higher than normal precast concrete box. These test results are analyzed and compared with results of finite clement analysis. The comparison shows that test results are more excellent than analytical results. Also, the comparison confirms the applicability of recycled aggregate concrete for the use as practical precast concrete box structure.

  • The authors have proposed that waste glass, which is crushed to pieces, can be used as a concrete aggregate. At the present time, recycled-glass concrete is used for sidewalk concrete blocks and pavement as glass is ornamental. However, in cases where recycled-glass concrete is used for structural concrete, strength and durability are required as structural concrete is exposed to the weather. Glass that is used generally is a mixture of SiO$_2$, Na$_2$O and CaO. SiO$_2$is the most likely cause of alkali-aggregate reaction when waste glass was used for concrete aggregate. In this study, an alkali-aggregate reaction test that is one of the important tests related to durability of aggregate was carried out far discussion of utilization of waste glass for concrete aggregate. From the results of the tests, it is found that glass is a reactive aggregate. The pessimum proportion of glass is about 75%. Then the cases of using fly ash, blast furnace slag and artificial zeolite for admixture materials were also examined for the purpose of prevention of alkali-aggregate reaction. from the results of the test, it was found that using them is an effective way to prevent alkali-aggregate reaction. The compressive strength in the cases of using admixture materials is larger than that without admixture materials.

  • Since at least three-quarters of the volume of concrete is occupied by aggregate, it is not surprising that its quality is considerable importance. Not only may the aggregate limit the strength of concrete, as weak aggregate cannot porduce strong concrete, but the properties of aggregate greatly affect the durability and sructural performance of concrete. But, it is ture that aggregate strength is usually not a factor in normal concrete strength because the aggregate particle is several times stronger than the matrix and the transition zone in concrete. This study is to consider the influence the strength of concrete according to the kinds of aggregate, such as crushed river rocks, curshed rocks, high strength recycled aggregate, low strength recycled aggregate at water cement ratio 0.25. It is possible to concern the important of the mechanical role of aggegate for the high strength concrete.

  • This study investigated the use of recycled aggregate from waste asphalt concrete in dry soil concrete mixed with red mud. The results showed that dry soil concrete utilizing waste asphalt recycled aggregate had relatively lower compressive strength compared to that using crushed aggregate. However, dry soil concrete mixed with red mud using waste asphalt recycled aggregate achieved a compressive strength of over 18.0MPa, meeting the highest performance standard for parking lot use, when the cement content was more than 250kg/m3.

  • The utilization of geopolymer recycled aggregate concrete (GRAC) as the infilled core of the concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns provides superior economic and environmental benefits. However, limited research exists within the field of geopolymer recycled aggregate concrete considered a green and sustainable material, in addition to the limitation of the design guidelines to predict the behavior of such an innovative new material combination. Moreover, the behavior of high-strength concrete is different from the normal-strength one, especially when there is another material of high-strength properties, such as the steel tube. This paper aims to investigate the behavior of the axially loaded square high-strength GRACFST columns through the nonlinear finite element analysis (NLFEA). A total of thirty-two specimens were simulated using ABAQUS/Standard software with three main variables: recycled aggregate replacement ratio (0, 30, and 50) %, width-to-thickness ratios (52.0, 32.0, 23.4, and 18.7), and length-to-width ratio (3, 5, 9, and 12). During the analysis, the response in terms of the axial load versus the longitudinal strain was recorded and plotted. In addition, various mechanical properties were calculated and analyzed. In view of the results, it has been demonstrated that the mechanical properties of high-strength GRACFST columns such as ultimate load-bearing capacity, compressive stiffness, energy absorption capacity, and ductility increase with the increase of the steel tube thickness owing to the improvement of the confinement effect of the steel tube. In contrast, the incorporation of the recycled aggregate adversely affected the mentioned properties except the ductility, while the increase of the recycled aggregate replacement ratio improved the column's ductility. Moreover, it has been found that the increase in the length-to-width ratio significantly reduced both the failure strain and the energy absorption capacity. Finally, the obtained NLFEA results of the ultimate load-bearing capacity were compared with the corresponding predicted capacities by numerous codes. It has been concluded that AISC, ACI, and EC give conservative predictions for the ultimate load-bearing capacity since the confinement effect was not considered by these codes.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the absorption ratio reduction of recycled coarse aggregate for concrete coated by polymer dispersions. The surface of recycled coarse aggregate is treated by polymer dispersion such as SBR and SAE with solid contents of 2%, 5% and 10%. From the test results, The minimum absorption ratio of the coated recycled coarse aggregate is 1.60 times smaller than that of uncoated recycle coarse aggregate. It is apparent that the absorption ratio of recycled coarse aggregate is much more improved by surface coating with polymer dispersions.

  • This study investigates engineering properties of concrete using recycled coarse aggregated manufactured by bar-crusher. Test showed that Bar-crusher(S) had more effective results at fresh state than cone-crusher(C) and impact-crusher(I). In case of specimens manufactured by S, increase of spindle velocity, incorporating ratio of recycled aggregate and maximum size of aggregate inclined fluidity. As for the hardened concrete, compressive strength of specimens by C or I exhibited lower value than that of S. In addition, specimens using recycled aggregate manufactured by 400rpm and 500rpm of spindle velocity showed less than 10% reduction rate of strength, which is not significant reducing value. It is found that 500rpm of the spindle velocity had the best strength performance, while 600rpm was the worst. Strength value of specimens decreased as incorporating ratio of recycled aggregate inclined, but the strength value of most specimens exhibited less than 10% of reducing rate, assuming favorable result, only at less than 25% incorporating ratio of recycled aggregate.
