The compressive strength and electrical resistance of pitch-based carbon fiber (CF) in cementitious materials are explored to determine the feasibility of its use as a functional material in construction. The most widely used CFs are manufactured from polyacrylonitrile (PAN-based CF). Alternatively, short CFs are obtained in an economical way using pitch as a precursor in a melt-blown process (pitch-based CF), which is cheaper and more eco-friendly method because this pitch-based CF is basically recycled from petroleum residue. In the construction field, PAN-based CFs in the form of fabric are used for rehabilitation purposes to reinforce concrete slabs and piers because of their high mechanical properties. However, studies have revealed that construction materials with pitch-based CF are not popular. This study explores the compressive strength and electrical resistances of a cement paste prism using pitch-based CF.

The incorporation of non-biodegradable tyre waste in cement-based material has gained more interest towards sustainable construction these days. Crumb rubber (CR) from waste tyre is an alternative for sand replacement in low strength applications. Many researchers have studied CR cement-based materials produced by normal mixing (NM) method and reported a significant decrease in compressive strength due to CR. To compensate this strength loss, this research aims to study the innovative incorporation of CR in cement composite via the preplaced mixing (PM) method. In this investigation, cement composite was produced with NM and PM methods by replacing sand with 0%, 50%, and 100% CR by volume. The test results showed no significant difference in terms of densities of cement composite prepared with both mixing methods. However, cement composite prepared with PM method had lower strength reduction (about 10%) and lowered drying shrinkage (about 20%). In addition, the sound absorption coefficient and noise reduction coefficient of CR cement composite prepared by PM method were in similar range as those prepared with NM method. Overall, the results demonstrate that the PM method is promising, and the maximum replacement level of 50% is recommended for CR in the cement composite.
Exterior walls in buildings are exposed to various forms of thermal loads, which depend on the positions of walls. Therefore, one of the efficient methods for improving the energy competence of buildings is improving the thermal properties of insulation plaster mortar. In this study, lightweight fine aggregate (LWFA) and micro rubber ash (MRA) from recycled tires were used as partial replacements for sand. The flow ability, unit weight, compressive strength, tensile strength, thermal conductivity (K-value), drying shrinkage and microstructure scan of lightweight rubberized mortar (LWRM) were investigated. Ten mixtures of LWRM were prepared as follows: traditional cement mortar (control mixture); three mixes with different percentages of LWFA (25%, 50% and 75%); three mixes with different percentages of MRA (2.5%, 5% and 7.5%); and three mixes consisting both types with determined ratios (25% LWFA+5% MRA, 50% LWFA+5% MRA and 75% LWFA+5% MRA). The flow ability of the mortars was 22±2 cm, and LWRM contained LWFA and MRA. The compressive and tensile strength decreased by approximately 64% and 57%, respectively, when 75% LWFA was used compared with those when the control mix was used. The compressive and tensile strength decreased when 5% MRA was used. By contrast, mixes with determined ratios of LWFA and MRA affected reduced unit weight, K-value and dry shrinkage.

As the 21st century began, cement and concrete that are representatives of modem building materials became a major factor in global warming, air pollution and environmental pollution. Also, the problems that are generated while pursuing high performance and high strength became social issues. Therefore, it has become urgent to prepare counter plans. This study has aimed at the recycling of sewage sludge ash and developing it as a new concept in building material which serves the environmental considerations for long-lasting developmental purpose. Also, the study aimed to find a substitute for scarce natural resources and to secure high techniques for waste recycling. The purpose of this study was also to solve fundamentally secondary environmental pollution. The results revealed that the chemical components of sewage sludge ash are mainly $SiO_2\;and\;Al_2O_3$ which are similar to the components of pozzolan. Also, it was identified that sewage sludge ash can be utilized as a hardened specimen with an alkali activated pozzolan reaction. Considering the possibility of appropriate strength development and the advantage of drying shrinkage, compared with that of cement, it was believed that sewage sludge ash can demonstrate a function as a substitute for cement given.

Since concrete is a hardened aggregates of various materials, it needs to be crushed for chemical analyses. However, the effect of sample crushing on the analytical results has not been precisely assessed till today. In this study, we prepared concrete test pieces using Portand cements and fly ashes as binding materials, and ponded ashes and sands as aggregates and analyzed the heavy metals of the test pieces using Standards for Fair Testing of Soil Contamination (SFTSC) and Wastes (SFTW). For this, each test piece was partially crushed at first and sieved for separation of grains of <0.15 mm, 0.15-0.5 mm, and 0.5-5 mm from the same crushed samples (Crushing Method I). Results of those samples using SFTSC showed a clear trend that analyzed heavy metal concentrations are higher in the finer fractions. Particularly, fractions with <0.15 mm indicated much higher concentrations than the theoretical ones, which were calculated based on the concentrations of individual materials and their mixing fractions. In contrast, the analytical results were generally comparable with the theoretical ones when the test pieces were totally pulverized such that all the crushed grains were <0.15 mm in size (Crushing Method II). These results are associated with the fact that cement materials and fly ashes, which are high in heavy metals relative to other materials, are enriched in the fine fractions. The analytical results using the SFTW derived very low concentrations in most of parameters and did not indicate the dependence of concentrations on the crushing methods due to using distilled water as leaching agent.

Many harbor structures have been constructed, and some structures are now under construction in Korea, which is a peninsular state and a logistics hub in Northeast Asia. Expansions and extensions of existing harbors are also being planned to meet increasing natural disaster threats. Wave-dissipation concrete blocks are recycled or discarded based on the personal experience of engineers only, and there are no safety checks or criteria. To check the safety of used blocks, material evaluations were done by visual inspection of blocks on the ground and under water and from 20 non-destructive measurements of the rebound hardness test and 3 concrete core samples. Wave-dissipation blocks are sometimes fully or partially damaged in the process of transferring and mounting them or during construction. Therefore, a safety check is essential for recycling blocks with an evaluation of materials while considering the construction phases. To do this, a block was modeled with a 3D finite element method using ADINA, and impact analyses were done according to the transfer, mounting, and construction phases. From the results of the impact analyses and material evaluation, the safety checks and reasonable evaluation of used blocks were examined, and detailed construction methods are proposed. The methods are expected to maximize the reuse of used wave-dissipation blocks from an economical point of view.

Social infrastructures and industrial complexes have been actively constructed in South Korea since the 1960 s as part of the economic development plan, resulting in rapid industrialization. However, side-effects due to the industrialization have occurred. An increase in industrial by-products or wastes is a typical problem. Although some industrial by-products are recycled in Korea as well as worldwide, some wastes are landfilled or dumped in the sea. Although many researchers have executed various technologies for the disposal of industrial wastes, economic and environmental technologies have not been developed. Thus, this study aims to activate paper and fly ashes during the crush process to overcome the drawback of simple concrete mixed with paper and fly ashes, which cause a reduction in workability and strength, derive an optimal content and replacement ratio of concretes mixed with Energetically Modified Material (EMM), and evaluate the material performance. In addition, the basalt fiber is mixed simultaneously to achieve the reduction of cracks and improve the tensile strength.

For several decades, many researchers have been involved in developing recycling methods for FRP boats. There are four basic classes of recycling covered in the literature. Despite of environmental problems(safety hazards), mechanical recycling of FRP boats, which involves shredding and grinding of the scrap FRP, is one of the simpler and more technically proven methods than incineration, reclamation or chemical ones. Because FRP is made up of reinforced fiber glass, it is very difficult to break into pieces. It also leads to secondary problem in recycling process, such as air pollution and unacceptable shredding noise level. Another serious problem of mechanical FRP recycling is very limited reusable applications for the residue. This study is to propose a new and efficient method which is more wide range applications and environment friendly waste FRP regenerating system. New system is added with the cyclone sorting machine for airborne pollutions and modified cutting system for several glass fiber chips sizes. It also has shown the FRP chip fiber-reinforced concrete and fiber-reinforced secondary concrete applications with the waste FRP boat to be more eligible than existing recycling method.
The main objective of this study is the assessment of the ability of limestone mortars to resist to different chemical attacks. The ability of polypropylene (PP) fibres waste used as reinforcement of these concrete materials to enhance their durability is also studied. Crushed sand 0/2 mm which is a fine limestone residue obtained by the crushing of natural rocks in aggregates industry is used for the fabrication of the mortar. The fibres used, which are obtained from the waste of domestic plastic sweeps' fabrication, have a length of 20 mm and a diameter ranging between 0.38 and 0.51 mm. Two weight fibres contents are used, 0.5 and 1%. The durability tests carried out in this investigation included the water absorption by capillarity, the mass variation, the flexural and the compressive strengths of the mortar specimens immersed for 366 days in 5% sodium chloride, 5% magnesium sulphate and 5% sulphuric acid solutions. A mineralogical analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and a visual inspection are used for a better examination of the quality of tested mortars and for better interpretation of their behaviour in different solutions. The results indicate that the reinforcement of limestone mortar by PP fibres waste is an excellent solution to improve its chemical resistance and durability. Moreover, the presence of PP fibres waste does not affect significantly the water absorption by capillarity of mortar nether its mass variation, when exposed to chloride and sulphate solutions. While in sulphuric acid, the mass loss is higher with the presence of PP fibres waste, especially after an exposure of 180 days. The results reveal that these fibres have a considerable effect of the flexural and the compressive behaviour of mortar especially in acid solution, where a reduction of strength loss is observed. The mineralogical analysis confirms the good behaviour of mortar immersed in sulphate and chloride solutions; and shows that more gypsum is formed in mortar exposed to acid environment causing its rapid degradation. The visual observation reveals that only samples exposed to acid attack during 366 days have showed a surface damage extending over a depth of approximately 300 ㎛.
Most of the dredged sand generated from the sewage pipe maintenance project and the government's four-river project are disposed depending on abandonment and filling-up. This is caused by the lack of related recycling technology using dredged sand appropriately and high absorption rate and micro-particles of dredged sand producted from existing sand production system. Thus, this study carried out a quality assessment for the dredged sand produced through the optimum washing and sorting system supplementing problems of existing dredged sand production system as a part of research to examine performance of removing micro-particles and foreign substances. As a result of the assessment, the dredged sand produced through the cleaning and sorting system showed a wide quality improvement effect in absorption rate, 0.08 mm sieve pass amount, clay lump volume and organic impurity content, and it turned out to satisfy both the quality standards of this study, KS F 2573(recycled aggregate for concrete) and KS F 2526(aggregate for concrete) so it could be confirmed that it would be able to be used as an aggregate for concrete in the future.
