This Paper describes a detailed experimental investigation of heat transfer in a reciprocating smooth rectangular duct having only the bottom wall heated with reference to the design of a piston for a marine propulsive diesel engine The Parametric test matrix involves Reynolds number and reciprocating radius, respectively, in the range of 1.280∼4.100, and 7∼15 cm with five different reciprocating frequency tested. namely. 1.7, 2.2, and 2.6 Hz. The effects of three different hemi-triangular wavy type tapers on the heat transfer in the reciprocating rectangular channel using the air as a working fluid were check out. The present work confirms that the Nusselt number in the channel with the triangular wavy type taper is lower than without the triangular wavy type taper.
The present study proposes modified temperature-dependent non-Newtonian viscosity model and investigates flow characters and heat transfer enhancement of the viscoelastic non-Newtonian fluid in a 2:1 rectangular duct. The proposed modified temperature dependent viscosity model has non-zero value near the high temperature and high shear rate region while on the existing viscosity models have zero value. Two versions of thermal boundary conditions involving difference combination of heated walls and adiabatic walls are analyzed in this study. The combined effect of temperature dependent viscosity, buoyancy, and secondary flow caused by second normal stress difference are ail considered. The Reiner-Rivlin model is adopted as a viscoelastic fluid model to simulate the secondary flow caused by second normal stress difference. Calculated Nusselt numbers by the modified temperature-dependent viscosity model gives under prediction than the existing temperature-dependent viscosity model in the regions of thermally developed with same secondary normal stress difference coefficients with experimental results in the regions of thermally developed. The heat transfer enhancement of the viscoelastic fluid in a 2:1 rectangular duct is highly dependent on the secondary flow caused by the magnitude of second normal stress difference.
Emission of ultrasonic vibration to turbulent flow promotes the turbulence generation due to the resonantly oscillating pressure field and thereby induced cavitation. In addition, ultrasonic vibration is well transmitted through water and not dissipated easily so that the micro-bubbles involved in the fluid induce the gaseous cavitation if the bubbles are resonated with the ultrasonic field. In the present study, we found through LDV measurement that the gaseous cavitation induced by ultrasonic vibration to CO$_2$saturated water flow in the rectangular cross-sectioned straight duct enhances turbulence much more than the case of non-ultrasonic or normal ultrasonic conditions without gaseous cavitation. We also found that the fluctuating velocity component induced by emitting the ultrasonic vibration in normal direction of a rectangular channel flow can be redistributed to stream-wise component by the agitation of gaseous cavitation.

An abrupt increase of duct cross-section is frequently encountered in pressure reducing devices, valves of internal combustion engines and in gas pipelines. Supersonic flow in a rectangular duct passing an abrupt increase of cross-section is studied numerically. The behavior of base pressure of the dead-air region at sudden enlargement of the duct is clarified. This investigation concerns the determination of the base pressure, which is independent of the size of the enlarged part. Several flow patterns are identified with different enlargements according to the ratio between the downstream ambient pressure and the upstream reservoir pressure. Base pressure and the resulting shock-structure are highly depending on the size of duct enlargement. For a given duct, base pressure tends to minimum for a particular pressure ratio. In addition, the locations of secondary separation and reattachment points of the jet plume are found with respect to different duct enlargements.

Heat transfer augmentation in a rib-roughened duct is affected by the rib configurations, such as rib height, angle of attack, shape, rib to rib pitch, and aspect ratio of a duct. These have been the main subjects in studying the average heat transfer and the friction loss of the fully developed flow. Investigating distributions of local heat transfer coefficients and flow patterns in a duct with the rib turbulators is necessary to find the characteristics of heat transfer augmentation and to decide the optimal configurations of ribs. In the present study the numerical analyses and the mass transfer experiments are performed to understand the flow through a rib roughened duct and the heat transfer characteristics with various angles of attack of ribs. A pair of counter-rotating secondary flow in a duct has a main effect on the lateral distributions of local mass transfer coefficients. Downwash of the rotating secondary flow, reattachment of main flow between ribs and the vortices near ribs and wall enhanced the mass transfer locally up to 8 times of that in case of the duct without ribs.
A numerical study has been performed on the flow past a two-staged orifice in a rectangular duct. The flow field including the recirculation region behind the orifice was investigated and the pressure drop was calculated. Water was used as a working fluid and the flow was treated as the turbulent flow, of which the Raynolds number was 6000. The main parameters for the pressure drop and the recirculation region were the orifice's inclined angle against the duct, the interval between two orifices, the shape of the orifice's hole having the same area, and the change of the hole position at the same interval. The variation of the flow field was investigated with each parameter. Consequently, it was found that the most dominant parameter influencing the drop of the pressure was the change of the hole position at the same interval between orifices. Especially when the interval between orifices was narrow and the relative position the holes was changed, its effect to the flow field was shown most drastically as a result of this study. The SIMPLER algorithm with FLUENT code was employed to analyze the flow field.

A numerical study was conducted to show the effect of aspect ratio on the analogy of the developing laminar flows between in orthogonally rotating straight duct and in a stationary curved duct of rectangular cross-section. In order. to clarify the similarity of two nows, dimensionless parameters (equation omitted) and Rossby Ro= $w_{m}$$\Omega$$d_{h}$, in a rotating straight duct were used as a set corresponding to Dean number, (equation omitted), and curvature ratio, λ=R/ $d_{h}$, in a stationary curved duct. Four. different aspect ratios A=0.25, 0.5, 2 and 4 were considered. Under the condition that the magnitudes of Ro and λ were large enough to satisfy the 'asymptotic invariance property' and the aspect ratio was larger than 1, there were strong quantitative similarities between the two flows such as flow patterns, friction factors, and maximum axial velocity magnitudes fur the same values of $K_{LR}$ and $K_{LC}$ . On the other hand, as the aspect ratio decreased below 1 (A=0.25 and 0.5), the difference of the secondary flow intensity between these two flows was enhanced and therefore the analogy of two flows was not so evident as that of the larger aspect ratio (A=2 and 4). 4).nd 4).
The effect of Lorentz force(Electromagnetic force) on the liquid metal flow has been investigated. The flow velocity has been calculated by treating the Lorentz force as a source term in the Navier-Stokes equation. The liquid metal flow in the rectangular duct of an electromagnetic pump was analyzed with the Lorentz force varied.
The characteristics of flow in dividing regions are precise, therefore their classification is very important not only in industry but also in hydrodynamics. By now, many studies of flow in dividing regions have been performed, but flow characteristics that use visualization in dividing regions have not been studied. The present study of the PIV and the CFD exhibit average velocity distributions, kinetic energy distributions and total pressure distributions etc of the total flow field due to the development of the accurate visualization optical laser and of optical equipment. Also, PIV is accurate with the flows characteristics of the dividing region as continuous analysis is done using input equipment. The study analyzes average velocity vector field, average kinetic energy, x-axis stress distributions, average and total pressure distributions of dividing regions with flow for visualization of the PIV and the CFD measurement in a dividing rectangular duct.
