  • Feature based stereo matching is an effective way to perform 3D building reconstruction. However, in urban scene, the cluttered background and various building structures may interfere with the performance of building reconstruction. In this paper, we propose a novel method to robustly reconstruct buildings on the basis of rectangle regions. Firstly, we propose a multi-scale linear feature detector to obtain the salient line segments on the object contours. Secondly, candidate rectangle regions are extracted from the salient line segments based on their local information. Thirdly, stereo matching is performed with the list of matching line segments, which are boundary edges of the corresponding rectangles from the left and right image. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve better accuracy on the reconstructed result than pixel-level stereo matching.

  • Prototype selection offers the advantage of ensuring low learning time and storage space by selecting the minimum data representative of in-class partitions from the training data. This paper designs a new training data generation method using hyper-rectangles that can be applied to general classification algorithms. Hyper-rectangular regions do not contain different class data and divide the same class space. The median value of the data within a hyper-rectangle is selected as a prototype to form new training data, and the size of the hyper-rectangle is adjusted to reflect the data distribution in the class area. A set cover optimization algorithm is proposed to select the minimum prototype set that represents the whole training data. The proposed method reduces the time complexity that requires the polynomial time of the set cover optimization algorithm by using the greedy algorithm and the distance equation without multiplication. In experimented comparison with hyper-sphere prototype selections, the proposed method is superior in terms of prototype rate and generalization performance.

  • Hand segmentation and tracking is essential to the development of a hand gesture recognition system. This research features segementation and tracking of hand regions based the hue component of color. We propose a method that employs HSI color model, and segments and tracks hand regions using the hue component of color alone. In order to track the segmented hand regions, we only apply Kalman filter to a region of interest represented by a rectangle region. Initial experimental results show that the system accurately segments and tracks hand regions although it only uses the hue compoent of color. The system yields near real time throghput of 8 frames per second on a Pentium II 233MHz PC.

  • In this paper, we will present a container auto-landing system, the system use the stereo camera to measure the container depth information. And the container region can be detected by using its hough line feature. In the line feature detection algorithm, we will detect the parallel lines and perpendicular lines which compose the rectangle region. Among all the candidate regions, we can select the region with the same aspect-ratio to the container. The region will be the detected container region. After having the object on both left and right images, we can estimate the distance from camera to object and container dimension. Then all the detect dimension information and depth inform will be applied to reconstruct the virtual environment of crane which will be introduce in this paper. Through the simulation result, we can know that, the container detection rate achieve to 97% with simple background. And the estimation algorithm can get a more accuracy result with a far distance than the near distance.

  • This paper investigates the structural behavior of modular falsework system under sequential pattern loads. Based on the studies of 25 construction sites, the pattern load sequence modeling is defined as models R (rectangle), L and U. The study focuses on the system critical loads, regions of largest reaction forces, discrepancy between the pattern load and the uniform load, and the warning-system plan. The analysis results show that the critical loads of modular falsework systems with sequential pattern loads are very close to those with the uniform load used in design. The regions of largest reaction forces are smaller than those calculated by the uniform load. However, the regions of largest reaction forces of three models under sequential pattern loads can be considered as the crucial positions of warning-system based on the measured index of loading. The positions of the sensors for the warning-system for these three different models are not identical.

  • In this paper, an overview of segmentation and 3D visualization methods are presented. Commonly, the two kinds of methods are used to visualize organs and vessels into 3D from medical images such as CT(A) and MRI - Direct Volume Rendering (DVR) and Iso-surface Rendering (IR). DVR can be applied directly to a volume. It directly penetrates through the volume while it determines which voxels are visualizedbased on a transfer function. On the other hand, IR requires a series of processes such as segmentation, polygonization and visualization. To extract a region of interest (ROI) from the medical volume image via the segmentation, some regions of an object and a background are required, which are typically obtained from the user. To visualize the extracted regions, the boundary points of the regions should be polygonized. In other words, the boundary surface composed of polygons such as a triangle and a rectangle should be required to visualize the regions into 3D because illumination effects, which makes the object shaded and seen in 3D, cannot be applied directly to the points.

  • In detection of moving objects from video sequences, an essential process for intelligent visual surveillance, the cast shadows accompanying moving objects are different from background so that they may be easily extracted as foreground object blobs, which causes errors in localization, segmentation, tracking and classification of objects. Most of the previous research results about moving cast shadow detection and removal usually utilize color information about objects and scenes. In this paper, we proposes a novel cast shadow removal method of moving objects in gray level video data for visual surveillance application. The proposed method utilizes observations about edge patterns in the shadow region in the current frame and the corresponding region in the background scene, and applies Laplacian edge detector to the blob regions in the current frame and the corresponding regions in the background scene. Then, the product of the outcomes of application determines moving object blob pixels from the blob pixels in the foreground mask. The minimal rectangle regions containing all blob pixles classified as moving object pixels are extracted. The proposed method is simple but turns out practically very effective for Adative Gaussian Mixture Model-based object detection of intelligent visual surveillance applications, which is verified through experiments.

  • In this paper, we propose the region-based image retrieval method using JSEG which is a method for unsupervised segmentation of color-texture regions. JSEG is an algorithm that discretizes an image by color classification, makes the J-image by applying a region to window mask, and then segments the image by using a region growing and merging. The segmented image from JSEG is given to a user as the query image, and a user can select a few segmented regions as the query region. After finding the MBR of regions selected by user query and generating the multiple window masks based on the center point of MBR, we extract the feature vectors from selected regions. We use the accumulated histogram as the global descriptor for performance comparison of extracted feature vectors in each method. Our approach fast and accurately supplies the relevant images for the given query, as the feature vectors extracted from specific regions and global regions are simultaneously applied to image retrieval. Experimental evidence suggests that our algorithm outperforms the recent image-based methods for image indexing and retrieval.

  • In this paper, we proposed a face detection algorithm and a hardware implementation method for ROI(Region Of Interest) of AF(Auto Focusing). We used face features in skin regions of YCbCr color space for face detection. The face features are the number of skin pixels in face regions, edge pixels in eye regions, and shadow pixels in lip regions. The each feature was statistically selected by 2,000 sample pictures of face. The proposed algorithm detects two faces that are closer center of the image for considering the effectiveness of hardware resource. The detected faces are displayed by rectangle for ROI of AF, and the rectangles are represented by positions in the image about starting point and ending point of the rectangles. The proposed face detection method was verified by using FPGA boards and mobile phone camera sensor.

  • Transformin the huge size of drawings into a suitable format for CAD system and recognizng the contents of drawings are the major concerans in the automated analysis of engineering drawings. This paper proposes some methods for text/graphics separation, symbol extraction, vectorization and symbol recognition with the object of applying them to electronic cirucit drawings. We use MBR (Minimum bounding rectangle) and size of isolated region on the drawings for separating text and graphic regions. Characteristics parameters such as the number of pixels, the length of circular constant and the degree of round shape are used for extracting loop symbols and geometric structures for non-loop symbols. To recognize symbols, nearest netighbor between FD (foruier descriptor) of extractd symbols and these of classification reference symbols is used. Experimental results show that the proposed method can generate compact vector representation of extracted symbols and perform the scale change and rotation of extracted symbol using symbol vectorization. Also we achieve an efficient searching of circuit drawings.
