  • To enhance thermal efficiency of thermal facility through recovery of low and medium temperature waste heat, 1MW organic Rankine cycle system was designed and developed. The exhaust gases of $175^{\circ}C$ at two 100MW power plants in pohang steel works were selected as the representative of low and medium temperature waste heat in industrial process for the heat source of the organic Rankine cycle system. HCFC-123, a kind of harmless refrigerant, was chosen as the working fluid for Rankine cycle. The organic Rankine cycle system with selected exhaust gases and working fluid was designed and constructed. From the operation, it was confirmed that the organic Rankine cycle system is available for low and medium temperature waste heat recovery in industrial process. The optimum operating manuals, such as heat-up of hot water, turbine start-up, and the process of electric power generation, were derived. However, electric power generated was not 1MW as designed but only 670kW. It is due to deficiency of pump capacity for supply of HCFC-123. So it is necessary to increase the pump capacity or to decrease the pressure loss in pipe for more improved HCFC-123 supply.

  • Waste to Energy Plant were recognized as hateful facilities, and there were many conflicts in the location due to social problems such as the NIMBY phenomenon due to problems such as damage to property in the surrounding area, odor, and image loss. Problems such as air pollution and odor are solved by the development of advanced prevention facilities such as electric dust collectors, wet cleaning systems, semi-dry reaction towers, bag filters, and catalyst towers (SCR: Selective Catalytic Reduction), and air recycling facilities in waste storage tanks. However, it is being avoided because of the perception that it is an incinerator. To resolve these conflicts, the government installs and operates resident convenience facilities to compensate residents near resource recovery facilities, provides green space and improves the environment, and supports heating expenses in accordance with the 「Waste Treatment Facility Support Act」. The purpose of this study is to derive implications through the analysis of domestic and overseas case studies for resident convenience facilities and environment improvement for the promotion of local communities in resource recovery facilities and use them as basic data for community promotion and environmental improvement when installing resource recovery facilities in the future.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of Sanhujori facility use among the first time mothers in Korea. Methods: A qualitative study was conducted, using focus group interview. Data were collected from the 24 first time mothers of 4 focus groups, who had given birth within 6 month and had used one of the Sanhujori facilities located in C province, Korea. After obtaining written informed consent from all participants, each session of the focus group was audio-taped and transcribed into verbatim. Data were analyzed using content analysis in order to identify significant themes. Results: Four major themes that emerged from the data were as follows. 1) Promoting postpartum physical recovery through a enough time with only focusing on herself, 2) Promoting postpartum psychological recovery through emotional and informational support with peer mothers, 3) Experiencing breast feeding difficulties and disappointing with unsatisfied help from health professionals, and 4) Lack of the professional education programs regarding parenting. Conclusion: Based on these results, it will be suggested that the various support programs by not only the peer mothers co-resided in Sanhujori facilities but also the health care professionals in the Sanhujori facilities should be developed for helping a "becoming a mother" of the first time mother in the Sanhujori facilities. In addition, qualified education and counseling program, especially for the successful breast feeding, should be provided by the health care professionals for improving mothering ability of the first time mother in the Sanhujori facilities.

  • In database management systems(DBMSs), partial rollback is a useful facility that cancels part of the executed operations upon user's requests without a total rollback. Many relational DBMSs(RDBMSs) provide this facility, However, object-orientccd DBMSs (OODBMSs) cannot utilize the previous recovery scl18lne of partial rollback usccd in (RDBMSs) since, unlike RDBMSs, they use a dual buffer consisting of an object buffer and a page buffer. Therefore, a new recovery scheme is required that rolls back the data efficiently in the dual buffer. We propose four partial rollback schemes in OODBMSs that use a dual buffer. We classify the proposed schemes into the single buffer based partial rollback scheme and the dual buffer based partial rollback scheme according to the number of buffers used for partial rollback processing. We further classify them into Uthe page buffer based partial rollback scheme, 2)the object buffccr based partial rollback scheme, 3)the dual buffer based partial rollback scheme using soft log, and 4)the dual buffer based partial rollback scheme using shadows. We evaluate the performance by mathematical analysis and experiments. The results show that the dual buffer based partial rollback scheme using shadows provides the best performance.

  • In the present study, an attempt has been made to assess whether the effect of benzene extract of Ocimum sanctum leaves on the ultrastructural changes in the epithelial cells of the cauda epididymis, its subsequent recovery in the seminiferous epithelium and fertility of male albino rats. Wistar strain male albino rats were orally administered benzene extract of 250 mg/kg body weight of O. sanctum leaves followed by subsequent recovery maintaining suitable controls for 48 days. Results indicate decrease in the weights of testis, epididymis and seminal vesicles. Other accessory organs were not affected. Total count, cell and nuclei diameters of germ cells and Leydig cells were reduced. Cauda epididymis exhibited significant reduction in epithelial height and nuclei diameter of epithelial cells. Cells showed vacuolization with exhibit of signs of degeneration. Ultra study revealed that, in general, the cauda epididymis was affected and in particular, the principal, clear and basal cells were highly disturbed. Further, there was decrease in the size of lipid droplets, mitochondria, Golgi complex, endoplasmic reticulum and accumulation of lysosomal bodies. Fertility performance test showed no implantation in female rats mated with O. sanctum treated rats. Moreover, their recovery after withdrawal of treatment was observed suggesting that the effect of the treatment is transient and reversible. A recovery period resulted in normal spermatogenesis and fertility, suggesting reversible antispermatogenic and antifertility effects of the plant.

  • To address the problems associated with climate change and energy shortage, Korea has been making efforts to turn waste materials into usable energy. Due to the ongoing efforts to convert waste materials into energy, waste incineration is expanding to utilize the heat generated, and the subsequent greenhouse gas emissions from these waste material incineration are expected to increase. In this study, a municipal waste incineration plant that generates heat and electricity through heat recovery was selected as a subject facility. Methods for estimating the greenhouse gas emissions in the municipal waste incineration plant that was selected as a subject plant were sought, and the greenhouse gas emissions and emission factor were estimated. The $CO_2$ concentrations in discharge gas from the subject facility were on average 6.99%, and the result from calculating this into greenhouse gas emissions showed that the total amount of emissions was $254.60ton\;CO_2/day$. The net emissions, excluding the amount of greenhouse gas emitted from biomass incineration, was shown to be $110.59ton\;CO_2/day$. In addition, after estimating the emissions by separating the heat and electricity generated in the incineration facility, greenhouse gas emission factors were calculated using the greenhouse gas emissions produced per each unit of output. The estimated emission factor for heat was found to be $0.047ton\;CO_2/GJ$ and the emission factor for electricity was found to be $0.652ton\;CO_2/MWh$. The estimated emission factor was shown to be about 17% lower than the $0.783ton\;CO_2/MWh$ emission factor for thermal power plants that use fossil fuels. Waste material types and fossil carbon contents were evaluated as being the factors that have major effects on the greenhouse gas emissions and emission factor.

  • Oil sands are a mixture of sand, clay, and a high-viscosity petroleum called bitumen. Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) is the most viable and environmentally safe recovery technology for extracting bitumen. It extracts the viscosity-lowered bitumen by high pressure, high temperature steam injected into the bitumen reservoir. The steam is produced at the Central Processing Facility (CPF). Typically, more than 90% of the energy consumed in producing bitumen are used to generate the steam. Fuels are employed in the process, which cause economic and environmental problems. This paper explores the retrofit of heat exchanger network to reduce the usage of hot and cold utilities. The hot and cold utilities are reduced respectively 6% and 37.3% which in turn resulted in 5.3% saving of total annual cost by improving the existing heat exchanger network of the CPF.

  • The annual total phosphorus load caused by public wastewater, nightsoil and livestock manure treatment facilities in Korea has been examined macroscopically. Annual domestic average phosphorus (P) inflows through the income of phosphate rock for the last five years (2012 - 2016) were analyzed as 76,598 tons/year. As of the year 2015, the total loadings of phosphorus attributed to public wastewater treatment facilities, nightsoil treatment facilities and livestock wastewater were estimated as 30,269 tons/year, 1,909 tons/year and 18,138 tons/year, respectively. Considering the amount of phosphorus imports, the annual phosphorus load from wastewater, livestock wastewater and excretions is equivalent to 39.5%, 23.7%, 2.5% and totally 65.7%(39.5% + 23.7% + 2.5%). Therefore, the introduction of phosphorus recovery and recycling processes for the public wastewater and livestock manure treatment facilities has been found to be effective because it could reduce the import amount of phosphate rock by up to 60% or more.

  • Zinc consumption in a continuous galvanizing line is one of the highest operating cost items in the facility and minimizing zinc waste is a key economic objective for any operation. One of the primary sources of excessive loss of zinc is through the formation of top dross and skimmings in the coating pot. It has been reported that the top skimmings, manually removed from the bath, typically consist of more than 80% metallic zinc with the remainder being entrained dross particles ($Fe_2Al_5$) along with some oxides. Depending on the drossing practices and bath management, the composition of the removed top skimmings may contain up to 2 wt% aluminum and 1 wt% iron. On-going research efforts have been aimed at in-house recovery of the metallic zinc from the discarded top skimmings prior to selling to zinc recycling brokers. However, attempting to recover the zinc entrapped in the skimmings is difficult due to the complex nature of the intermetallic dross particles and the quality and volume of the recycled zinc is highly susceptible to fluctuations in processing parameters. As such, an efficient method to extract metallic zinc from top skimmings has been optimized through the use of a specialized thermo-mechanical process enabling a continuous galvanizing facility to conserve zinc usage on-site. Also, through this work, it has been identified that filtration of discrete dross particles has been proven effective at maintaining the cleanliness of the zinc. Future efforts may progress towards expanded utilization of filters in continuous galvanizing.
