Design of Reconfigurable Hardware for FIR Filters (재구성 가능한 FIR 필터 하드웨어 구조 설계)

  • In general, for specific applications, customized hardware showed better performance than general processor in terms of processing time and power consumption. However, customized hardware systems have lacks of flexibility in nature and it leads the difficulties for debugging and architecture level revision for performance enhancement. To solve this problem, reconfigurable hardware is developed. Proposed reconfigurable hardware architecture for FIR filter system can easily change the architecture of filter blocks including filter tap size and their signal path. Proposed FIR filter architecture was implemented on FPGA using several MUXs and registers and it showed the reconfigurablility and reusability in several examples.

A Programmable Multi-Format Video Decoder (프로그래머블 멀티 포맷 비디오 디코더)

  • This paper introduces a programmable multi-format video decoder(MFD) to support HEVC(High Efficiency Video Coding) standard and for other video coding standards. The goal of the proposed MFD is the high-end FHD(Full High Definition) video decoder needed for a DTV(Digital Tele-Vision) SoC(System on Chip). The proposed platform consists of a hybrid architecture that is comprised of reconfigurable processors and flexible hardware accelerators to support the massive computational load and various kinds of video coding standards. The experimental results show that the proposed architecture is operating at a 300MHz clock that is capable of decoding HEVC bit-stream of FHD 30 frames per second.

Novel IME Instructions and their Hardware Architecture for Fast Search Algorithm (고속 탐색 알고리즘에 적합한 움직임 추정 전용 명령어 및 구조 설계)

  • This paper presents an ASIP (Application-specific Instruction Processor) for motion estimation that employs specific IME instructions and its programmable and reconfigurable hardware architecture for various video codecs, such as H.264/AVC, MPEG4, etc. With the proposed specific instructions and variable point 2D SAD hardware accelerator, it can handle the real-time processing requirement of High Definition (HD) video. With the SAD unit and its parallel operations using pattern information, the proposed IME instructions support not only full search algorithms but also other fast search algorithms. The hardware size is 25.5K gates for each Processing Element Group (PEG) which has 128 SAD Processor Elements (PEs). The proposed ASIP has been verified by the Synopsys Processor Designer and implemented by the Design Compiler using the IBM 90nm process technology. The hardware size is 453K gates for the IME unit and the operating frequency is 188MHz for 1080p@30 frame in real time. The proposed ASIP can reduce the hardware size about 26% and the number of operation cycles about 18%.

  • 본 논문은 다양한 멀티미디어 응용을 위한 재구성가능(reconfigurable) 구조의 프로세서 설계에 대해서 연구하였다. 설계된 프로세서는 RISC 코어 프로세서와 코스-그레인(coarse-grain) 구조의 재구성가능 셀들의 배열로 이루어진 처리 유닛으로 구성되었다. 여기서 사용된 RISC 코어 프로세서는 하드웨어 구조를 간단히 하기 위하여 MIPS 명령어들 중에서 사용빈도가 높은 것들만 고려하였으며, 재구성가능 처리를 위한 별도의 명령어를 추가하였다. 본 논문에서 제시한 재구성가능 프로세서는 VHDL로 모델링하여 실행을 검증하였으며, 하드웨어의 유연성을 증가하여 다양한 멀티미디어 응용에 적용함과 아울러 속도향상에 기여함을 볼 수 있었다.

  • RSA crypto-processors equipped with more than 1024 bits of key space handle the entire key stream in units of blocks. The RSA processor which will be the target design in this paper defines the length of the basic word as 128 bits, and uses an 256-bits register as the accumulator. For efficient execution of 128-bit multiplication, $32b^*32b$ multiplier was designed and adopted and the results are stored in 8 separate 128-bit registers according to the stalks flag. In this paper, a fast 32bit nodular multiplier which is required to execute 128-bit MAC (multiplication and accumulation) operation is proposed. The proposed architecture prototype of the multiplier unit was automatically synthesized, and successfully operated at the frequency in the target RSA processor.

  • This paper proposes a reconfigurable parallel processor architecture which can efficiently implement various multimedia applications, such as 3D graphics, H.264/H.263/MPEG-4, JPEG/JPEG2000, and MP3. The proposed architecture directly connects memories and processors so that memory access time and power consumption are reduced. It supports floating-point operations needed in the geometry stage of 3D graphics. It adopts partitioned SIMD to reduce hardware costs. Conditional execution of instructions is used for easy development of parallel algorithms.

  • This paper analyzes performances of modules in implementing a programmable multi-format video decoder. The goal of the proposed platform is the high-end Full High Definition (FHD) video decoder. The proposed multi-format video decoder consists of a reconfigurable processor, dedicated bit-stream co-processor, memory controller, cache for motion compensation, and flexible hardware accelerators. The experiments suggest performance baseline of modules for the proposed architecture operating at 300 MHz clock with capability of decoding HEVC bit-streams of FHD 30 frames per second.

  • This paper present a method of constructing the multimedia processor architecture. The proposed multimedia processor architecture be able to handle each text, sound, and video in one chip. Also it have interactive function that is a characteristics of multimedia. Specially, the proposed multimedia processor be able to addressing nodes in memory map without software, and it is completely reconfigurable depend on data. Also it as able to process time and space common that have synchronous/asynchronous and it is able to protect continuous and dynamic media bus collision, and local and overall common memory structure. The proposed multimedia processor architecture apply to virtual reality and mixed reality.

Novel Reconfigurable Coprocessor for Communication Systems (통신 시스템을 위한 고성능 재구성 가능 코프로세서의 설계)

  • This paper proposes a reconfigurable coprocessor for communication systems, which can perform high speed computations and various functions. The proposed reconfigurable coprocessor can easily implement communication operations, such as scrambling, interleaving, convolutional encoding, Viterbi decoding, FFT, etc. The proposed architecture has been modeled by VHDL and synthesized using the SEC 0.18$\mu$m standard cell library. The gate count is about 35,000 gates and the critical path is 3.84ns. The proposed coprocessor can reduced about $33\%$ for FFT operations and complex MAC, $37\%$ for Viterbi operations, and $48\%\~84\%$ for scrambling and convolutional encoding for the IEEE 802.11a WLAN standard compared with existing DSPs. The proposed coprocessor shows Performance improvements compared with existing DSP chips for communication algorithms.

  • Expansible & Reconfigurable Neuro Informatics Engine(ERNIE) is effective in reconfigurability and extensibility. But ERNIE have the problem which have limited performance in initial network. To solve this problem, the constructive module using the reconfigurable ERNIE is implemented in simulation model. In this paper, simulation results on sonar data are showed that ERNIE using the constructive module obtains the better performance compared to ERNIE without it.
