  • Energy Storage System(ESS) can be used as several purposes such as uninterruptible power supply (UPS), frequency regulation, maximum load cut, and etc. This paper analyzes and simulates the reclosing operation in distribution system with ESS for frequency regulation and maximum load cut. To solve the effect from ESS, two sequences in reclosing process are added to conventional reclosing. The modelings and simulations of reclosing operation using EMTP/ATPDraw are performed.

  • This paper presents how to evaluate the transformer damage caused by reclosing scheme at the distribution substation. We describe a quantitative relationship between the reclosing scheme and the number of fault current flowing through transformer wsing the probability of a reclosing success/failure. The transformer damage from reclosing scheme is presented using a weight function and a damage function. A weight function is associated with the number of reclosing attempts and the reclosing deadtime to consider cumulative stress caused by reclosing scheme. A damage function is associated with a transformer impact ratio and a transformer functional life. In the case study, the transformer damage is simulated for the probability of a reclosing success. And the evaluation of transformer damage using KEPCO's operation data is performed.

  • Fault current in power system is expected to increase by demand of power capacity. Therefore, when the fault occurred, fault current was increased in the power system. Many studies have been progressed to limit the fault current. Superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is one of them which has been studied in worldwide. In this paper, we will analyze characteristics of a transformer-type SFCL by reclosing operation when the voltage increases. Twice opening times in the reclosing of circuit breaker were set as the 0.5 and 15 seconds, respectively. Turn's number of primary and secondary coils set 4:2 and we increased voltages from 120V to 280V for each experiment. By the current waveform, maximum fault current in second and third cycles was lowered when the voltage was increased. In the recovery waveform, recovery time was increased as the voltage was increased. The reason was that power burden of the SFCL increased when consumption power was increased, so the time to get back to SFCL took longer. We compared the characteristics of a resistive-type and transformer-type SFCL. As a result, we found that the fault current of a transformer-type was lower than resistive-type and recovery time of the SFCL was shorter. Consequently, transformer-type SFCL was more profitable for limitation of fault current and recovery time under the same condition for reclosing operation.

  • These days, the widespread use of sensitive loads and distributed generators makes the solid-state circuit breaker (SSCB) an essential component in power circuits to achieve a high power quality for AC Grids. In traditional AC SSCB using SCRs, some auxiliary mechanical devices are required to make the reclosing operation possible before fault recovery. However, the proposed AC SSCB can break quickly and then be reclosed without auxiliary mechanical devices even during the short-circuit fault. Moreover, its fault current breaking time is short and its SSCB reclosing operation is fast. This results in a reduction of the economic losses due to fault currents and power outages. Through simulations and experiments on short-circuit faults, the performance characteristics of the proposed AC SSCB are verified. A design guideline is also suggested to apply the proposed AC SSCB to various AC grids.

  • In transmission system, reclosing scheme is very useful method to improve continuity of power supply and reliability of system. Especially, high speed reclosing which is used generally in transmission systems has a benefit improving transient stability. However, the reclosing can jeopardize the stability under the condition having high difference of voltage phase angle between both ends. Thus, this paper proposes optimal sequential reclosing scheme to improve transient stability due to reclosing operation. The optimal sequential reclosing is that each phase is closed sequentially considering transient energy. In this paper, 345kV and 154kV transmission system is modeled using EMTP (ElectroMagnetic Transient Program) to verify the performance and effectiveness of optimal sequential reclosing on transient stability. Also, Integral Square Error(ISE) method is used to assess the transient stability.

  • This paper describes switching surge analysis for reclosing decision in 345kV combined transmission line with XLPE power cable. Reclosing operation should be decided based on the detailed technical analysis in combined transmission line because this line includes power cable section which is week on insulation. Insulation of power cable can be breakdown at the week point in case of reclosing moment. Therefore the detailed analysis has to be carried out by considering several conditions such as length ratio of power cable section, arrestor, inserting resistance, charging rate, grounding resistance, etc.. On the other hand sheath voltage on IJ(Insulated Joint) is analyzed to check dangerous condition on cable cover. Analysis is performed by EMTP/ATP. Analysis results show that reclosing can be operated as the single line-to-ground fault occurs on overhead line in 345kV combined transmission line, if the inserting resistance is considered before the operation of main circuit breaker.

  • The study concerning about the grid connection of the large-capacity battery energy storage system(BESS) is increasing. However, the protection study which is necessary to maintain the reliability of distribution system has been hardly performed. Therefore, this paper analyzes the effect of reclosing among protection issues in distribution system with BESS and proposes the new relcosing method. To verify the proposed method, the BESS, distribution system, and proposed method are modeled by using EMTP/ATPDraw and the various simulations according to the fault clearing time are performed. The simulation results show that the reclosing in distribution system with BESS is successfully performed by proposed method and the operation of BESS is not affected from reclosing.

For an originated faults, this scheme can determine the number of reclosing attempts, so that minimizes the affect of electric facility and customers' load. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. numerical simulation which calculates a various indices to consider the reliability and the effect of electric facility, is carried out with actual field data. Results show that the proposed scheme can be applicable to field operation.

  • The breaking capacity of circuit breakers could be no more increased in the electric power system. This is because the fault current increases due to continuous increases in electric power demand and facilities. To solve the problem, it is necessary to come up with an alternative. The superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has received an attention among various alternatives. The SFCL effectively reduce a fault current in cooperation with a power circuit breaker. A various types of the SFCL are suggested and a study on them have been progressed. As a result of it, the SFCL can be applyed to the electric power system in the near future. But, a study on recovery behaviors of the SFCL is not enough for applying to the electric power system. If the superconducting elements do not completely recover to the superconducting state after fault operation, it might be a breakdown of the superconducting elements due to heavy power burden and it gives an bad influence on the working of other electric devices. Additionally, the distribution power system has reclosing operation such as open-0.3sec-closed/open-3min-closed/open procedure. So we need to study more about improvement of the recovery behaviors of the SFCL. In this paper, we analyzed the recovery behaviors of a flux-coupling type SFCL according to reclosing operation when a single line-to-ground fault occurred and we compared recovery behaviors of the SFCL with and without a neutral line between secondary reactors and superconducting elements. Also, the flux-coupling type SFCL has advantageous for increases of capacity by controlling the variation in turn ratios between two reactors. Consequently, when the number of turns of the secondary reactors increased, the power burden of the superconducting elements was bigger due to the increase of impedances of the secondary reactors. To distribute the power burden, two superconducting elements connected in series and the balanced quenching of the superconducting elements was induced by connecting a neutral line.

  • In this paper, we analyze the voltage sag caused by reclosing on electric power distribution system. When a fault is on the electric system, a reclosing operation brings a voltage sag on the feeders which is supplied with a common substation transformer. By analyzing the fault wave-form measured in the field, it is showed that a voltage sag is in proportion to a fault current. Also, we propose an adaptive reclosing scheme. This scheme changes the number of reclosing as a function of the magnitude of a fault voltage and the fault type. As the proposed scheme is compared with conventional scheme in the side of voltage sag and permanent fault, it is verified that the proposed scheme is more effective than conventional scheme.
