  • The use of clean gaseous fuels for the purpose of high efficiency and low emission in automotive engines has tendency to increase in order to meet the reinforcing emission regulations and to efficiently utilize limited natural resources. Automotive companies developed and commercialized a LPG liquid injection system, which is mounted on LPLi(Liquid Phase LPG Injection) engines and vehicles based on this research trend. This research examines the biggest problem in LPLi engine, that is, the leakage characteristics of low viscosity LPG fuel according to the injector design variables. This study is also aimed to improve the performance of fuel-leakage in LPLi engine through the addition of a lubrication improver in HFRR(High Frequency Reciprocating Rig) facility. The needle displacement and the spring displacement of an LPLi injector are found to be already optimized. The possibility of a maximum of 70% leakage reduction compared to a conventional case, is verified when 1000ppm of a lubrication improvement material is added and 40% increase of a injector spring constant (K) is applied.

  • In order to recover Pt from the hydrochloric acid leaching solution of spent catalysts, bench scale Karr reciprocating column was employed. At an optimum flow rate and vibration frequency, iron and Pt was completely extracted by using TBP and Aliquat 336. At the same vibration frequency, iron and Pt was completely stripped by HCl and $HClO_4$ after adjusting the flow rate. In the case of extraction of HCl from the raffinate with TEHA, it was difficult to maintain the stability of the column extractor. A comparison of the operation results between column extractor and mixer-settler is reported.

  • The suction muffler of a reciprocating compressor is used for reducing noise produced by pressure pulsations. According to the shape, the suction muffler is classified into one-chamber type, two-chamber type, Helmholtz resonator type, pipe-resonator type, and so on. These mufflers are used according to the characteristics of the frequency of compressor noise. In this study, four pole parameters have been used for calculating Transmission Loss of the muffler, and Insertion Loss has been acquired for the optimum design of the muffler by the experiment.

  • This paper presents numerical and experimental methods of investigating dynamic characterisics of reed valves of hermetic reciprocating compressors. For the natural frequency, two different techniques have been tried : microphone method and strain gage method. In the microphone method, acoustic pressure signals from excited valves have been analyzed, while signals of tiny strain gauge attached on the reed valves have been utilized in the strain gage method. The empirically determined natural frequencies have been compared to the ones calculated by finite element method. Reasonably good agreements between the experimental and numerical results have been found, implying that the natural frequencies of reed valves could be obtained by FFM alone with enough accuracy.

  • In order to investigate the sensation of the fabric sound simulating the real wear-condition, the fabric sound simulator using reciprocating friction was developed. Fabric sounds from 5 specimen were generated by the fabric sound simulator and recorded using high performance microphone. Physical sound parameters of fabrics including level pressure of total sound (LPT), level range (${\Delta}L$), and frequency differences (${\Delta}f$) were calculated. For psychological evaluation, seven adjectives for sound (softness, loudness, sharpness, clearness, roughness, highness, and pleasantness) were used as the semantic differential scale. Fabric sounds by reciprocating friction of nylon taffeta and polyester leno had the highest value of LPT and evaluated as loud, sharp, rough, and unpleasant while polyester ultra suede and silk crepe de chine haying the lower LPT and ${\Delta}f$ were perceived as soft and quite. Comparing with fabric sound by one-way friction, fabric sound by reciprocation friction was perceived as more sharp, loud, and rough. LPT was also the most important factor affecting the sensation of the fabric sound by reciprocating friction.

  • This study investigates friction and wear characteristics of anodized aluminum (Al) alloy 6061 by using a reciprocating tribotester. The diameter and height of the specimen are 30 mm and 10 mm, respectively. The surface roughness of the mirrored-surface is approximately $0.01{\sim}0.02{\mu}m$, and it is used throughout the current study. As a result of anodizing, the depth and diameter of the nanopore are approximately $25{\mu}m$ and 30-40 nm, respectively. The testing conditions are as follows: loads of 1, 3, and 5 N; a frequency of 1 Hz; a stoke of 3 mm; and a duration of 1800 s. We use deionized water with a volume of approximately $25{\mu}l$, as the lubricant. Micro Vickers hardness measurements show that mirrored-surface specimens had lower hardness values than anodized specimens. Further, their coefficients of friction are lower than those of the anodized samples, and the width of their wear track increases with load, as expected. The anodized specimens' coefficients of friction increase with stable frictional behavior and exhibit insignificant load dependence. Further, we observe that the width of the wear track is less than that of the mirrored-surface specimens, and micro cracks are present near it. Moreover, the anodizing process increases the hardness of the samples, improving their wear resistance. These results indicate that nanoporous structures are not effective in lowering friction under the water-lubricated condition.

  • In analysis of piping vibration of petrochemical plant, the forcing functions mainly depend upon the equipment working mechanism and vibration resources in the piping systems. In general, harmonic function is used for the system with rotary equipments. Mechanical driving frequencies, wave functions, and response spectrum are used for reciprocating compressors, surge vibration of long transfer piping, and seismic/wind vibration, respectively. In this study, for the spray injection case inside the pipe, forcing function was modeled, in which two different fluids are distributed uniformly. To confirm the results, the scheme used for the forcing function was applied for real piping system. The vibration mode of the real system was consistent with the 4th mode obtained by simulation using the forcing function formulated in this study.

  • In many cases, periodic noise occurs because most applications include motors, compressors and so on which have reciprocating motion. The noise usually contains tones at the fundamental frequency and at several higher harmonic frequencies in practice. For this type of noise, we developed a frequency-domain active noise control algorithm and determined that it's effective. However, the performance deteriorated for quasi-periodic noise. In this paper, we develop compensated frequency-domain active noise control algorithm for quasi-periodicity. And then, we implement computer simulation and compare the performance.

  • An experiment to observe reduction of pressure fluctuation in the compressing system utilizing snubber has done. The experiment measured pressure at inlet and outlet of snubber. It used an air compressor as a model of hydrogen one. Snubber with buffer and snubber without buffer were used to get comprehensive comparison between both of that snubber. An analysis by using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) method was conducted to verify working pressure frequency. With this method pure signal of static pressure was filtered from noisy signal. The experiment was run for several speeds of piston movement. It was controlled by adjustable frequency regulator that controled rotation of actuator motor. This was connected to the piston-reciprocating compressor with V-belt. From result obtained, the fluctuation was increasing proportionally when frequency of driver motor was increased.
