  • This study investigated the effects of stress and time history of overconsolidated clayey soils on pore pressure parameter, A. Laboratory tests were carried out under the conditions of both varying stress and time history. The stress history is classified into (i) rotation angle of stress path, (ii) overconsolidation ratio, and (iii) magnitude of length of recent stress path. The time history is divided into (i) loading rate of recent stress path and (ii) rest time. Pore pressure parameters are different both in the magnitude and trend with the rotation angle, depending on the magnitude of overconsolidation ratio but not in a trend. In addition, the pore pressure parameters have no effects on the magnitude of length of recent stress path except the level of initially small strain, while loading rates of recent stress path have effects on it. Finally, the pore pressure parameters of overconsolidated clays increase with the existence of the rest time, until either the deviator stress exceeds 70 kPa or the strain up to 0.1%.

  • The aim of this study is to ascertain the relationship between ingestion of raw cow liver and $Toxocara$ $canis$ infection. A total of 150 apparently healthy adults were divided into 2 groups; 1 group consisted of 86 adults with positive results of Toxocara ELISA, and the other group of 64 adults with negative results. One researcher collected the history of ingestion of raw cow liver within 1 year and recent history of keeping dogs. Among 86 seropositive adults for $T.$ $canis$, 68 (79.1%) had a recent history of ingestion of raw cow liver. Multivariate statistical analysis showed that a recent ingestion of raw cow liver and keeping dogs were related to an increased risk of toxocariasis (odds ratios, 4.4 and 3.7; and 95% confidence intervals, 1.9-10.2 and 1.2-11.6, respectively). A recent history of ingestion of raw cow liver and keeping dogs was significantly associated with toxocariasis.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the prevalence of Neopsora (N) caninum infection in Korean dairy herds. To determine the prevalence of antibodies to N caninum in Korean dairy cattle, a total of 1,688 sera including 895 sera taken from 30 herds having recent high abortion rate and 793 sera selected randomly from 168 herds with no history of recent abortion problem, respectively, collected nationwide during a designated period were analyzed by indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test. Mean nationwide seropositive rate of the sera tested in herds and individual cattle tested were 53.5% and 35.6%, respectively. However mean seropositive rate of the samples from herds having abortion problem was approximately two and half times higher than those in herds with no recent abortion history. Regional seropositive rates of the samples from the herds with abortion problem were 48.6%, 51.6%, 44.4% and 71.4% at Kyunggi, Kangwon, Kyungbuk and Jeonnam province, respetively. Regional seropositive rates of the samples from the herds with no recent abortion problem were 35.6%, 18.3%, 16.5%, 37.5%, 19.4%, 33.3%, 32.1%, 3.8% and 0.0% at Kyunggi, Kangwon, Chungbuk, Chungnam, Kyungbuk, Kyungnam, Jeonbuk, Jeonnam and Jeju province, respectively. The results of this study suggested that N caninum infection was widespread and considerably associated with bovine abortion in Korea.

  • Background: In January 2015, South Korea's government raised the cigarette tax, and the retail price of cigarettes abruptly increased by 80% compared to the previous year. This research aimed to determine the effect of this increase on smoking cessation among South Korean smokers. Methods: We analyzed data collected by the 2013-2015 South Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of 15,203 South Koreans over 19 years old using regression analysis. We examined the recent non-smoking period of nonsmoking people, prepared according to the survey, and analyzed the recent smoking cessation ratio. Results: Among smokers, from 2013 to 2014, the smoking cessation rate was 7.2%, and it increased to 9.9% in 2015 after the increase in the cigarette tax. In 2015, the recent smoking cessation rate was higher among people over the age of 60 (odds ratio [OR], 2.67) compared to those between the ages of 40 and 49. The recent smoking cessation rate was higher among people with below elementary education (OR, 2.28) and above university education (OR, 1.94) compared to high school, higher for those with apartments (OR, 1.74) compared to general type residences, and higher among those with a household income in the low-middle quartile (Q2) (OR, 2.32) compared to the highest quartile (Q4). Conclusion: This innovative policy including increase in cigarette prices affected smoking cessation, and its impact varied by sub-group of smokers in South Korea.

  • Objective : The aim of this study is to compare the surgical outcome of the initial and recent surgical cases, during our 15-years experience, in terms of the surgical strategies and the prognostic factors for surgically remediable epilepsy. Methods : We retrospectively reviewed and compared the surgical outcomes between the initial 256 (Group I) and recent 139 (Group II) patients according to the time period of operation for a total of 518 consecutive epilepsy surgeries at our institution since 1992. The patients of the middle intermediate period, which were subjected to changed surgical strategies, were excluded. Results : The surgical outcome data from the initial and recent groups showed a much improved outcome for patients who underwent temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) surgery over time. The number of patients with a good outcome (Engel class I-II) was much increased from 87.7% (178 TLE cases of Group I) to 94.8% (79 TLE cases of Group II) and this was statistically significant (p = 0.0324) on univariate analysis. Other remarkable changes were the decreased performance of intracranial invasive studies from 43.5% in Group I to 30.9% in Group II due to the advanced neuroimaging tools. The strip/grid ratio was reduced from 131/32 in Group I to 17/25 in Group II, because of a markedly reduced mesial TLE surgery and an increased extratemporal epilepsy surgery. Conclusion : Our results show that surgical outcome of epilepsy surgery has improved over time and it has shown to be efficient to control medically intractable epilepsy. Appropriate patient selection, comprehensive preoperative assessments and more extensive resection are associated with good postoperative outcomes.
