  • In order to manage the water quality from the flowing streams in Cheju Island, the characteristics of water quality was investigated from August, 1996 to May, 1997 and the pollutant loadings for future were estimated from the watershed at each stream. Comparing the mean concentrations of each water quality with the criterion of water quality in river, it was under I class except for Changgo Stream, for DO, under I class at the whole station for SS and under II class for BOD. As the pollutant loadings at each stream in 2020 is compared with those in 1996, the estimated results are as follows : 1) for BOD, 59% at Donghong Stream, 24% at Yeonoe Stream, 44% at Ohngpo Stream and 57% at Changgo Stream. 2) for T-N, 91% at Donghong Stream, 76% at Yeonoe Stream, 63% at Ohngpo Stream and 89% at Changgo Stream. 3) for T-P, 69% at Donghong Stream, 42% at Yeonoe Stream, 45% at Ohngpo Stream and 73% at Changgo Stream. The point source loadings discharged through combined sewer could be treated at sewage treatment plant. However, the expected slow decreasing rate of BOD, T-N, and T-P loadings is due to the part of untreated nonpoint source loadings. Nonpoint source loading overflow typically occurs when the flow of stormwater combined with sewage exceeds the capacity of the interceptor sewers. Since most of the sewers used in Cheju Island are the combined sewers, the combined overflow sewage is bypassed into the receiving water area after a rainstorm. Therefore, a means to control nonpoint source loadings should be considered for the river and marine water quality management.

  • This paper describes the design and implementation of engineering model(EM) of Mass Memory Unit(MMU) for Science and Technology Satellite 2(STSAT-2) and the results of integration test. The use of Field-Programmable Gate Array(FPGA) instead of using private electric parts makes a miniaturization and lightweight of MMU possible. 2Gbits Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory(SDRAM) module for mass memory is used to store payload and satellite status data. Moreover, file system is applied to manage them easily in the ground station. RS(207,187) code improves the tolerance with respect to Single Event Upset(SEU) induced in SDRAM. The simulator is manufactured to verify receiving performance of payload data.

  • (255,223) RS(Reed-Solomon) code which is the CCSDS(Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems) standard was used in the STSAT-3 to correct errors during the downlink of payload data. The RS encoder developed by VHDL was implemented in MMU(Mass Memory Unit). Moreover, the RS decoder developed by C-language was implemented in the DRS(Data Receiving System) of ground station. In this paper, we reported the design and analysis results of RS(255,223) for STSAT-3. The BER(Bit Error Rate) performance from MMU to DRS was confirmed through the downlink test at 16 Mbps. Also, the error correction performance and capability of RS(255,223) was tested by the manual attenuation of the RF(Radio Frequency) signal in the X-band transmitter resulting in putting some errors in the communication line.

  • It has been growing interests that convergence services of broadcasting and telecommunication services such as DMB 2.0 and Mobile IPTV etc. Unicast type is difficult to service broadcasting due to limits of capacity and poor receiving environments, WiBro supports broadcast service with MBS. MBS is transmission method that base stations belong to same the MBS zone transmit the all users who request broadcasting service. Terminals are received resources from all base station in the MBS zone and SINR can be improved because of macro diversity. If terminals are located at edge of the MBS zone, complement algorithm are needed beacause received SINR is very low. In this paper, MIMO STBC, Relay and FFR are introduced to improve the throughputs using high MCS. The basic simulation environment is assumed to be SISO. Transparent relay and FFR applicable on MBS are divided by SISO and MIMO STBC environment and evaluate the performance.

  • In this paper, we have designed the antenna for Korea SAT-5 Satellite Communication which can use Ka band in the earth station. The antenna structure consist of the the dual-offset gregorian reflector that has high gain and efficiency, the corrugated horn that has symmetric radiation patterns and low side lobe levels, the iris polarizer that make circular polarization and the OrthoMode Transducer that separate transmitting and receiving signals. The designed antenna gain is more than 45.7dBi in Tx-band which use LHCP and 42.0dBi in Rx-band which use RHCP. The co-polarized and cross-polarized radiation pattern comply with ITU-R S.580-6 and S.731-1 that are recommended by International Telecommunication Union in the geostationary satellite. The Axial ratio is less than 1.0dB in Tx-band and 1.5dB in Rx-band that meet MIL-STD-188-164A.

  • In Korea, the number of those who were drowned of the dead by 'accident and injury' ranked the third of causes of death is over 2,300 people a year. So the Ministry of Home Affairs arranged '119 drowning rescue team' at frequent occurrence regions of drowning temporarily as a part of drowning rescue measures during every summer season and made perfection more perfect for safety control and rescue services at prevention areas of accidents. However, considering that the number of professional drowning rescuers is small and it is managed temporarily only for summer, the placement of special rescue team equipped with professional education and qualification should be ensured and quick lifesaving and first-aid treatment should be conducted, since much time is required to arrive at accident place after receiving accident report at 119 office, rapid rescue and relief have not been achieved. Therefore, the placement of special rescue team should be increased for reducing the personal damages by considering regional characteristics and in particular placement of more drowning rescue teams in Jeonnam region which has more seas and rivers is needed This study aims at analyzing relief activities and statistics to cope with water accidents and achieve qualitative growth of first-aid services, examining actual conditions of water accident relief team and personnel assignment, providing first-aid services of good quality and establishing improvement methods to increase operation of relief team.

  • With the goal of achieving better integrated pest management for hot pepper, a disease-forecasting system was compared to a conventional disease-control method. Experimental field plots were established at Asan, Chungnam, in 2005 to 2006, and hourly temperature and leaf wetness were measured and used as model inputs. One treatment group received applications of a protective fungicide, dithianon, every 7 days, whereas another received a curative fungicide, dimethomorph, when the model-determined infection risk (IR) exceeded a value of 3. In the unsprayed plot, fruits showed 18.9% (2005) and 14.0% (2006) anthracnose infection. Fruits sprayed with dithianon at 7-day intervals had 4.7% (2005) and 15.4% (2006) infection. The receiving model-advised sprays of dimethomorph had 9.4% (2005) and 10.9% (2006) anthracnose infection. Differences in the anthracnose levels between the conventional and model-advised treatments were not statistically significant. The efficacy of 10 (2005) and 8 (2006) applications of calendar-based sprays was same as that of three (2005 and 2006) sprays based on the disease-forecast system. In addition, we found much higher the IRs with the leaf wetness sensor from the field plots comparing without leaf wetness sensor from the weather station at Asan within 10km away. Since the wetness-periods were critical to forecast anthracnose in the model, the measurement of wetness-period in commercial fields must be refined to improve the anthracnose-forecast model.

  • Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs) refer to autonomous networks in which wireless data communications are established between multiple nodes in a given coverage area without a base station or centralized administration. Because of node mobility and limited battery life, the network topology may changes frequently. Selecting the most reliable path during route discovery process is important to improve performance in ad hoc networks. In this paper, an enhanced routing protocol based on AODV(Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector routing) by monitoring variation of receiving signal strength is proposed. New metric function that consists of node mobility and hops of path is used for routing decision. For preventing route failure by node movement during data transmission, a new route maintenance named as LRC (Local Route Change) is presented. If the node movement is detected, the routing agent switches path to its neighbor node in LRC. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed routing scheme is superior to previous AODY protocol.

  • It is required to design the RF link with sufficiently stable signal margin to minimize bit errors and improve the quality of received data in the telemetry system modulated digitally like PCM/FM. In case of the vehicle flying at a high speed, the variation of the gain pattern between transmitting and receiving antenna and the fee space loss due to flight distance cause the fluctuation of link. In this paper, KSR(Korea Sounding Rocket)- III, the first domestic liquid rocket which was successfully launched in Nov. 2002 is introduced. The SNR(signal-to-noise ratio) variation of the telemetry signal which was measured at S-band ground station, the one which was simulated considering the flight trajectory, and the attitude variation such as roll, pitch and yaw are compared, analyzed, and agree very well. In addition, two virtual flying situations are simulated and evaluated-only one antenna is equipped in one case, and rocket is roll-free in the other.

  • Sixteen Holstein heifer calves were used in an 112-day trial to study the effects of probiotic supplementation on growth performance and rumen metabolism. Calves were divided into four groups of four calves each, with two groups receiving the probiotic supplement and two groups serving as controls. Calves were limited to 1.6 kg dry matter of a corn-barley based grain mix per day. Long-stem bromegrass hay was fed as forage the first 56 days and bromegrass silage the last 56 days of the trial. Probiotic (28 g/d/calf) was fed along with the grain mix twice daily. Data were analyzed for the entire trial and also for the separate hay and silage feeding periods. Total weight gain and average daily gain were not affected (p>.05) by probiotic supplementation. Dry matter intake was lower (p<.05) and feed efficiency (kg feed/kg weight gain) was improved slightly during the hay feeding period for the probiotic-supplemented calves. Wither height gain was greater (p<.05) during the hay period and lower (p<.05) during the silage period for probiotic-supplemented calves. Heart girth gain was improved (p<.07) by probiotic supplementation, particularly during the hay feeding period (p<.05). Total rumen volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration was higher (p<.05) with the probiotic-supplemented calves. Molar proportions of individual VFA were not affected (p>.05). Rumen ammonia-N and plasma urea-N concentration were lower (p<.05) for probiotic-supplemented calves during the hay feeding period. Total tract nutrient digestibility was not affected (p>.05). Some improvements in animal performance and changes in rumen and blood metabolites were observed when calves were supplemented with probiotic. Effects due to probiotic supplementation were most pronounced during the hay feeding period.
