  • In this paper, the capacity and BER performance of downlink distributed antenna systems (DAS) with transmit antenna selection and multiple receive antennas are investigated in MIMO composite channel, where path loss, Rayleigh fading and lognormal shadowing are all considered. Based on the performance analysis, using the probability density function (PDF) of the effective SNR and numerical integrations, tightly-approximate closed-form expressions of ergodic capacity and average BER of DAS are derived, respectively. These expressions have more accuracy than the existing expressions, and can match the simulation well. Besides, the outage capacity of DAS is also analyzed, and a tightly-approximate closed-form expression of outage capacity probability is derived. Moreover, a practical iterative algorithm based on Newton's method for finding the outage capacity is proposed. To avoid iterative calculation, another approximate closed-form outage capacity is also derived by utilizing the Gaussian distribution approximation. With these theoretical expressions, the downlink capacity and BER performance of DAS can be effectively evaluated. Simulation results show that the theoretical analysis is valid, and consistent with the corresponding simulation.

  • In this paper, test-bed for the evaluation of wireless communication system on a small launch vehicle is proposed. The proposed test-bed consists of antenna test-coupler, RF attenuators, and RF switch modules. The antenna test-coupler isolates antennas for each band and transmits / receives wireless signals. The RF attenuator and switch are used for path selection of testing signal path. In design and measurement result of the antenna test-coupler, the antenna test-coupler has shielding effect higher than 39.3, 47.1, 56.1 dB at UHF-, S-, X-band. Through testing on small launch vehicle wireless communication system, we were able to successfully transmit and receive data between each test system and launch vehicle with antenna path switching.

  • Multiple-input multiple-output systems can achieve a full sum rate (SR) via full duplex (FD). However, its performance is degraded by self-interference (SI) that occurs between the transmitter and receiver at the same node and thus is constrained by error floors. Conversely, half duplex (HD) can avoid the SI albeit at lower spectral efficiency, and the slope of its error curve is determined by the diversity order. In this study, a link selection scheme based on switching between FD and HD is examined as a simple method to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of FD systems. In the proposed link selection algorithm, either FD or HD is selected based on the received minimum distance and signal-to-interference plus noise ratio. Simulation results indicate that the proposed hybrid FD/HD switching system offers significant BER performance improvement when compared with that of the conventional FD and FD based on only the received minimum distance under the same fixed SR. Under relatively sufficient SI cancellation, it is demonstrated to outperform the HD with a diversity advantage in low and medium signal-to-noise ratio region.

  • Energy efficiency is one of the most critical concerns for wireless sensor networks. By allowing sensor nodes in close proximity to cooperate in transmission to form a virtual multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) system, recent progress in wireless MIMO communications can be exploited to boost the system throughput, or equivalently reduce the energy consumption for the same throughput and BER target. However, these cooperative transmission strategies may incur additional energy cost and system overhead. In this paper, assuming that data collectors are equipped with antenna arrays and superior processing capability, energy efficiency of relevant traditional and cooperative transmission strategies: Single-input-multiple-output(SIMO), space-time block coding(STBC), and spatial multiplexing(SM) are studied. Analysis in the wideband regime reveals that, while receive diversity introduces significant improvement in both energy efficiency and spectral efficiency, further improvement due to the transmit diversity of STBC is limited, as opposed to the superiority of the SM scheme especially for non-trivial spectral efficiency. These observations are further confirmed in our analysis of more realistic systems with limited bandwidth, finite constellation sizes, and a target error rate. Based on this analysis, general guidelines are presented for optimal transmission strategy selection in system level and link level, aiming at minimum energy consumption while meeting different requirements. The proposed selection rules, especially those based on system-level metrics, are easy to implement for sensor applications. The framework provided here may also be readily extended to other scenarios or applications.

  • In this paper, we provide the performance analyses of a dual-hop amplify-and-forward(AF) relay transmission composed of asymmetric radio-frequence(RF) and free-space optical(FSO) links. In the mixed RF/FSO system, a relay is equipped with two receive antennas for RF signals and one additional transmit antenna for FSO signals. In order to improve a performance of RF link, a switch-and-stay (SSC) diversity technique is applied at the relay which can provide a proper link performance with a low complexity. Specifically, we offer the performance analyses of the proposed system in terms of outage probability and secrecy outage probability. In numerical examples, we compare the system performances with no diversity and selection combining systems and verify our analytical results via computer-based Monte-Carlo simulations.

  • In this paper, we consider a physical layer security of an amplify-and-forward (AF) transmission in a presence of an eavesdropper in a wiretap channel. The proposed wiretap channel consists of a source, a destination, a relay, and an eavesdropper. Specifically, we consider that the relay has multiple antennas to exploit a diversity gain and a receive/transmit antenna selection schemes are applied to maximize a signal-to-noise ratio. In a practical point of view, we focus on the practical scenario where the relay does not have any channel state information of the eavesdropper while performing an AF protocol at the relay. For a secrecy performance analysis, we analyze a secrecy outage probability of the proposed system in one-integral form and verify our analysis with the computer-based simulation.

  • Blind interference alignment (BIA) scheme has demonstrated a way of interference alignment (IA) without channel state information at transmitter (CSIT). While it shows superior performance in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime stemming from the maximal degrees of freedom (DoF) gain, BIA scheme achieves inferior sum-rate performance in low SNR regime. This paper proposes a dual-mode transmission strategy which switches between single user (SU) SISO with receive mode selection and the BIA scheme depending upon the range of SNR. First, we derive a closed-form achievable rate for each transmission-mode. Secondly, we propose a low-complex transmission-mode selection algorithm.

  • It is essential for the near-field receiving measurement to make beam pattern and check the performance of a active phased array antenna system. Also, we could obtain compensation value for mono-pulse function through the near-field receive test, however, if the radar has many frequency channel, the test would take long time and hard effort. So it is needed that frequency channels are selected for measurement and calculates the values for other frequency channels to improve efficiency in development and manufacture. In this case, the phase variations in sum and del channels would be checked. The phase measurement includes un-linear characteristic because of wrapping effect. Generally, radars have similar path length in sum and del channel, but if a radar has a electrical length gap between sum and del channel, errors could occur by phase's wrapping effect. In this paper, the interpolation method's error caused by electrical length gap is checked and the effective method for frequency channel selection to avoid wrapping effect is introduced.

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive coordinated Tx-Rx beamforming scheme for inter-user interference cancellation, when a BS communicates with multiple users that each has multiple receive antenna. The conventional coordinated Tx-Rx beamforming scheme uses a fixed multi-stream per user regardless of the instantaneous channel states, that is, both user with ill-conditioned and well-conditioned channels have the same number of data streams. However, in the proposed adaptive coordinated Tx-Rx beamforming scheme, we select the number of streams per user to solve the inefficient problem of the conventional coordinated Tx-Rx beamforming. As a result of applying the adaptive coordinated Tx-Rx beamforming scheme, the BER performance is improved. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional coordinated Tx-Rx beamforming algorithm by 2.5dB at a target BER of $10^{-2}$.
