  • Most of the studies on reduction of buildings' environmental burden in the construction industry have been focused on carbon dioxide emission, although there are various kinds of environmental issues such as global warming, acidification, and etc. which are considered by many researchers. Therefore, this study defined and suggested six impact categories and the principles to assess each impact for the assessment of comprehensive environmental impacts of buildings. The six impact categories are abiotic depletion, global warming, ozone layer depletion, acidification, eutrophication, and photochemical oxidation. A case study has been conducted through comparative analysis of two structural design alternatives to confirm the necessity of assessing the six impact categories. That is, the results of global warming potential and the six impacts proposed in this study were compared. By comparing the results of only global warming potential, the second design alternative using 24MPa concrete was chosen as a better alternative, while the first design alternative using 21MPa concrete was resulted as a better alternative when six impact categories were considered. The results mean that the assessment of various environmental impacts is an appropriate and reasonable approach and the comprehensive assessment offers more reliable results of environmental impacts in the building construction.

  • This study is to determine an optimal yacht mooring location candidate among many alternative candidates in order to obtain the maximized efficiency under the natural conditions using integer programming. To deal with marina's construction location, the optimal construction location is selected using 21 important factors analysis for 4 candidates in the Mokpo city. The development period and the initial investment cost weight are one and half times more than the others among 21 factors. The optimal spiral analysis of weighted linear model shows that the Peace Square sea area is selected as the most optimal place among 4 candidates. This proposed model has not been applied in the optimal marina's facility candidate selection problem yet. This paper will contribute to determine the most reasonable alternative. Also, this proposal model can be applied to other marina's facility candidate selection problem in other regions.

  • Modern commercial greenhouse requires the use of advanced climate control system to improve crop production and to reduce energy consumption. As an alternative to classical sensor-based control method, this paper introduces a model-based control method that consists of two models: the predictive model and the evaluation model. As a first step, this paper presents straightforward models to predict the effect of natural ventilation in a greenhouse according to meteorological factors, such as outdoor air temperature, soil temperature, solar radiation and mean wind speed, and structural factor, opening rate of roof ventilators. A multiple regression analysis was conducted to develop the predictive models on the basis of data obtained by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The output of the models are air temperature drops due to ventilation at 9 sub-volumes in the greenhouse and individual volumetric ventilation rate through 6 roof ventilators, and showed a good agreement with the CFD-computed results. The resulting predictive models have an advantage of ensuring quick and reasonable predictions and thereby can be used as a part of a real-time model-based control system for a naturally ventilated greenhouse to predict the implications of alternative control operation.

  • The Applegate-Kennedy classification, the drawing of removable partial denture design using color coding, the selective tissue placement impression method in case of Class I and Class II removable partial dentures, the design of the swing lock attachment of an alternative approach to conventional removable partial denture, the design of the intracoronal or extracoronal attachment, and the removable partial denture design using a rotational path were presented. The following conclusions from the above things were presented : 1. The swing lock attachment removable partial denture can be effective to an alternative approach when the design of conventional removable partial denture is improper with markedly mobile remaining teeth or missing key abutments. 2. Intracoronal or extracoronal attachments must be selected care-fully considering the conditions of the abutment teeth and alveolar ridge whether more occlusal loads to the abutment teeth or to the alveolar ridge are distributed. 3. It must be almost prerequisite that a functional impression is taken in case of Class I and class II removable partial dentures and in case of tooth-borne removable partial dentures, a removable partial denture using rotational path is strong, hygienic, esthetic, and can be accomplished successfully in the clinical aspect when it is properly designed and fabricated through the complete understanding of an indication and a principle. 4. All necessary informations must be achieved with carefully investigated surveying procedure according to each clinical case by Applegate-Kennedy classification which can be helpful and useful in the clinical application and it is important that dentists themselves must be in the habit of drawing a reasonable partial denture design using a color coding in the paper sheet.

  • Local Loop Unbundling(LLU) has been understood as the way of facilitate the competition on the access and the local telephone service market. There are major benefits of stimulating the competition in the local service, avoiding access network duplication and reducing in environmental disruption. However, LLU has several disadvantages such as removing incentives for building alternative access networks, undermining existing investment in alternative access networks, introducing new substantial costs to the industry and requiring prolonged and detailed regulatory intervention. The economic effects of LLU generally will be different according to the special situation of each countries and the object of LLU. In case of EU, most of countries have already introduced and implemented LLU. But EU can't expect the economic effects on LLU emerged in the early stage of introducing it and faced with dilemma. To be realized the successful implementation of LLU, I think, it is required to be reviewed about the main issues such as the problem of regulation, the reasonable level of LLU pricing and the technical & operational problems.

  • This research intended to show a reasonable way to improve working conditions of fire officers in Korea. It shows that fire officers have dignity of their social roles even though they have the unfairness in a work time, rewards, promotions and opportunities of overseas training compared with those of other government officers. The unfairness needs to be solved. In addition, there are more demands in fire fighters, but part of a regional government system already composed of 64.06% of fire officers, which means, there are too many fire fighters in one regional government. Therefore, it is difficult to employ more fire fighters. This is one of barriers to prevent from improvement of the working conditions. To improve the working conditions and to overcome the barriers, there are important solutions to counter the problems. Those are application of alternative policies and systems. Compared with the employment system and workload of fire officers in USA, Japan and other advanced countries, it is necessary to introduce alternative policies which include operation of partial three-shift system, expansion of oversees training, expansion of rotational-off system and improvement of employees' welfare policies.

  • Laparoscopic appendectomy is relatively well-established as an alternative to conventional open appendectomy by many laparoscopic surgeons. However, experience in the pediatric population remains limited. Over a period of 2 years, a total of 155 pediatric patients with acute appendicitis or complicated appendicitis were studied to compare laparoscopic and open appendectomies in childhood. Laparoscopic appendectomy was attempted in 49 patients and completed in 48 patients(98.0%). Open appendectomy was performed in 107 patients. The severity of disease, age, and male to female ratio were similar in both groups. The operation time was shorter in the laparoscopic group than open group but the difference was not significant statistically($43.7{\pm}11.3$ minutes versus $49.0{\pm}21.4$ minutes, p=0.066). In the laparoscopic group, the mean duration of surgery for the former half patients was significantly longer than for the latter half($49.6{\pm}9.2$ minutes versus $38.1{\pm}10.3$ minutes, p=0.001). The mean number of doses of analgesia required postoperatively was significantly less in patients undergoing laparoscopic appendectomy($2.4{\pm}1.8$ versus $3.3{\pm}2.5$, p=0.021). There were only 2(4.2%) wound infections after laparoscopic appendectomy compared with 10(9.3%) complications including 7 wound infections, 1 intestinal obstruction, and 2 pulmonary complications after open appendectomy, but the difference was not significant(p=0.614). Patients undergoing laparoscopic appendectomy had a shorter period of hospitalization($3.2{\pm}2.2$ days versus $6.4{\pm}1.6$ days. p=0.001). The present study suggests that laparoscopic appendectomy shortens operating time and hospital stay with diminished postoperative pain. Laparoscopic appendectomy in children offers advantages over open appendectomy as noted in adults. The authors consider laparoscopic appendectomy to be the reasonable alternative to open appendectomy in children.

  • Recently, the government has improvement projects of dangerous road for the site that has very high accident rate due to bad geometric structures of the road. Although, route selecting of the road is a basic and important process, but the process of route selecting must consider the technical, safety and environment factor together. Also, the technology for the 3-dimensional terrain model can be used as an important factor in planning and designing for selecting alternative route projects. In the course of experimenting with the 3-dimensional topography generated by the combination of the digital map and drawing of route, the technology as been developed to offer the multi-dimensional access to the potential construction sites from the nearby main roads. This 3-dimensional digital elevation model has made it possible to make various terrain analysis base on GIS, which provides real-time virtual access to the designated construction sites for development planning and construction projects. Therefore, this study presents a reasonable plan for route selecting from some alternative routes through subjective evaluation and classify the methods linked basic design of road construction.

  • Objective : Traditional medicine (TM) has been playing its role in national healthcare system and it is taken as complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) from the viewpoint of modern Western medicine. In the UK, not a few practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) are working as CAM practitioners using herbal medicine and acupuncture therapy. Cases of dispute in the TCM practice are not rare these days because patients who take TCM service are increasing by year. Method : In the UK, dispute cases of the Traditional Medicine of East Asia can be found these days, however, it is hard to find a reported court case. A medical dispute case of TCM will be analysed to see the legal management and the resolving principle in the alternative medicine practice with some cases of Korean Medicine (KM) being discussed. Results : The usual pattern of clinical negligence can be discussed from the points of a duty of care, breach of that duty by negligence, and the harm to the patient from that breach of duty. The judge followed this procedure In this case to discuss the claims. The department of health proposed to introduce regulation to provide the reasonable quality in TCM practice, and the governmental system would be essential to regulate both the TCM practice and practitioners. Conclusion : The dispute case of traditional Chinese herbal medicine (TCHM) practice is important for the clinical negligence in TCHM practice. Judging the negligence of a TCHM practitioner involves the conventional negligence principle in tort law, and the TCHM practitioners are required to keep up with the up-to-date information on the related medical specialty. The reasoning is almost the same as that shown in the court case of Korea. The TCHM practice in the UK needs to be under the regulation by the government. The standard of care we expect of a TCHM practitioner is a further matter to discuss from the healthcare and social viewpoints.

  • The selection of appropriate ground motions and reasonable modification are becoming increasingly critical in reliable prediction on seismic performance of structures. A widely used amplitude scaling approach is not sufficient for robust structural evaluation considering a site specific seismic hazard because only one spectral value is matched to the design spectrum typically at the structural fundamental period. Hence alternative approaches for ground motion selection and modifications have been suggested. However, there is no means to evaluate such methodologies yet. In this study, it is focused to describe the main questions resided in the amplitude scaling approach and to propose a regression model for structural damage as point of comparison. Spectrum compatible approach whose resulting spectrum matches the design spectrum at the entire range of the structural period is considered as alternative to be compared to the amplitude scaling approach. The design spectrum is generated according to ASCE7-05.
