  • PURPOSES : The lane width of the domestic highway is 3.5 ~ 3.6m and it has been designed nationwide. However, the distribution of the average vehicle widths, rearview mirror widths and lateral wheel paths by region appear different. Then, lane spare widths may differ by region followingly. Thus, the flexible design of freeway lane widths is required. METHODS : The methodologies of this paper are as follows. First, vehicle widths rearview mirror widths lateral wheel paths of vehicles driven four national expressways were measured. Second, lane spare widths by vehicle widths were calculated. Third, lane spare widths reflecting rearview mirror widths were calculated by using interval estimation. Additionally, lane spare widths reflecting vehicles lateral wheel paths were calculated. RESULTS : The results of this paper are as follows. First, lane spare widths by vehicle widths ranges 0.83 to 0.95m. Second, lane spare widths reflecting rearview mirror widths ranges 0.518 to 0.747m at the confidence interval 95%. Third, lane spare widths reflecting vehicles' lateral wheel paths ranges -0.022 to 0.322m at the curved sections and the confidence interval 95%. CONCLUSIONS : It may be concluded that the present lane spare widths are relatively narrow at the curved section. Thus, there is a need to consider expanded lane widths at the curved sections. Additionally, there is a need to consider flexible design of lane widths by various conditions.

  • Dynamic stability of the vehicle rearview mirror is an important factor for the driver's visual perception (image blur) when driving down the road and regarded as one of the vehicle level N&V performance of visible component vibration. Several projects within GM identified a set of objective metrics and validation methods that can replace current existing subjective evaluation of mirror stability. This paper presents objective evaluation results for assessing dynamic stability (angle of rotation) of the vehicle rearview mirrors using both in-lab FRF measurements and on-road testing.

  • An automobile outside rear view mirror system has been analyzed and designed to reduce vibration with a finite element model. model analysis is conducted for the calculation of natural frequencies. harmonic analysis is utilized to estimate the displacements of the glass surface under dynamic loads. The model is verified with the vibration experiment of the parts and the assembled body. The structure of the mirror system is optimized for the robustness defined by the Taguchi concept. At first, many potential design variables are defined. Final design variables are selected based on the amount of contribution on the objective function. That is, sensitive variables are chose. The SN ratio in the Taguchi method is replaced by an objective function with the mean and the standard deviation of the quality characteristic. The defined objective function is appropriate in the structural design in that the vibration displacements are minimized while the robustness is improved.

  • It is important to provide the opportunity and means to change body posture frequently during the work period. Maintaining a given posture, even if it appears comfortable in the beginning, becomes stressful as time goes on. In order to design most products some knowledge of the dimensions of the human body is required. Data concerning human body dimensions are referred to as anthropometric data. Anthropometric data are used to establish many product dimensions such as the heights of work surfaces, minimum size for access openings, spacing between controls, mounting angles for displays, distance between user and controls, and so forth. The usual procedure is to design to accommodate 90% of the population of anticipated product users. In sosme instances it is necessary to provide a method for adjusting because it allows users to alter the produst's dimensions to meet their individual needs. When the user makes the proper adjustments, the product will be easier to use (e.g., the seat and rearview mirror adjustment mechanisms on automobiles) or more comfortable (e.g., office chairs and stereo headphones).

  • For mist sensing, temperature-humidity sensor is attached on six positions of front glass and rearview mirror in automobile. Bottom-left side of front glass is the best position where mist is sensing. For mist removal, air conditioner is turned on intensity 1, 3 and is set the temperature at 17[$^{\circ}C$], 25[$^{\circ}C$]. And heater is turned on intensity 1, 3 and is set the temperature at 25[$^{\circ}C$], 32[$^{\circ}C$]. The best condition which mist is removed is temperature at 17[$^{\circ}C$] and intensity 3 of air conditioner mode. At this condition, total average value of humidity output voltage difference is 0.561[V]. Also, air conditioner mode is effective than heater mode for mist sensing and removal.
