In the turning maneuver of the vehicle, its motion is mainly dependent on the genuine steering characteristics in view of the directional stability for stable turning ability. The under steer vehicle has an ability to maintain its own directonal performance for unknown external disturbances to some extent. From a few years ago, in order to acquire the more enhanced handling performance, some types of four wheel steering vehicle were considered and constructed. And, various rear wheel control logics for external disturbances has not been suggested. For this reason, in this posed rear wheel control logic is based on the yaw rate feed back type and is slightly modified by an yaw rate tuning factor for more stable turning performance. And an external disturbance is defined as a motivation of the additional yaw rate in the center of gravity by an uncertain input. In this study, an external disturbance is applied to the vehicle as a form of the additional yawing moment. Finally, the proposed rear wheel control logic is tested on the multi-body analysis software(ADAMS). J-turn and double lane change test are performed for the validation of the control logic.
When the driver suddenly depresses the brake pedal under critical conditions, the desired trajectory of the vehicle can be changed. In this study, the vehicle dynamics and fuzzy logic controller are used to control the vehicle trajectory. The dynamic vehicle model consists of the engine, the rotational wheel, chassis, tires and brakes. The engine model is derived from the engine experimental data. The engine torque makes the wheel rotate and generates the angular velocity and acceleration of the wheel. The dynamic equation of the vehicle model is derived from the top-view vehicle model using Newton's second law. The Pacejka tire model formulated from the experimental data is used. The fuzzy logic controller is developed to compensate for the trajectory error of the vehicle. This fuzzy logic controller individually acts on the front right, front left, rear right and rear left brakes and regulates each brake torque. The fuzzy logic controlling each brake works to compensate for the trajectory error on the split - $\mu$ road conditions follows the desired trajectory.
An Integrated Dynamics Control system with four wheel Steering (IDCS) is proposed and analysed in this study. It integrates and controls steer angle of front and rear wheel simultaneously to enhance lateral stability and steerability. An active front steer (AFS) system and an active rear steer (ARS) system are also developed to compare their performances. The systems are evaluated during brake maneuver and several road conditions are used to test the performances. The results showed that IDCS vehicle follows the reference yaw rate and reduces side slip angle very well. AFS and ARS vehicles track the reference yaw rate but they can not reduce side slip angle. On split-${\mu}$ road, IDCS controller forces the vehicle to go straight ahead but AFS and ARS vehicles show lateral deviation from centerline.
This paper develops a 3 DOF vehicle model which includes lateral, roll and yaw motion to study a 4WS vehicle. The model is used for the simulation of a 4WS vehicle behavior, and to derive a control algorithm for rear wheel steering. This paper uses a feedforward plus feedback control scheme to compute a rear wheel steering angle. The feedforward control scheme for computing the first rear wheel steering angle uses a gain which is acquired by multiplying a proper value on a gain to maintain a zero sideslip angle. The feedback control scheme for computing the second rear wheel steering angle uses fuzzy logic and model following control scheme. A linear 2 DOF model is used as a reference model for model following control, and is derived from the developed 3 DOF model by neglecting sprung mass roll motion. A reference state variable is yaw rate, and is computed using the linear 2 DOF model. J-turn and lane change maneuver simulation are performed to show the effectiveness of the developed control scheme. The simulation results show that the 4WS vehicle with the developed control scheme has much better performance in yaw rate, lateral acceleration, roll angle, and sideslip angle than the 2WS vehicle. Also, the results show that the performance of the developed control is close to the one of an optimal control which assumes all states are perfect.
An integrated dynamic control (IDCF) with an active front steering system and an active rear braking system is proposed and developed in this study. A fuzzy logic controller is applied to calculate the desired additional steering angle and desired slip of the rear inner wheel. To validate IDCF system, an eight degree of freedom, nonlinear vehicle model and a sliding mode wheel slip controller are also designed. Various road conditions are used to test the performance. The results show that the yaw rate of IDCF vehicle followed the reference yaw rate and reduced the body slip angle, compared with uncontrolled vehicle. Thus, the IDCF vehicle had enhanced lateral stability and controllability.
In this paper the reference model following control(RMFC) scheme through the optimal control theory is investigated for the independent rear wheel steering(IRWS) vehicle. RMFC vehicle follows the dynamic performance of a virtual vehicle as a reference model deisgned in the controller. Linear vehicle model of two degres-of-freedom is used to derive control scheme which is applied to full vehicle for evaluating handling performances. And 4WS vehicle through RMFC is compared to the conventional 2WS vehicle and 4WS vehicle in the J-turn test. The RMFC logic is also extended to IRWS vehicle, IRWS with RMFC shows not only the excellent handling performance but salso some advantages in terms of the directional stability and responsiveness from the simulation results.
This paper presents a mathematical model which is about the dynamics of not only a two wheel steering vehicle but a four wheel steering vehicle. A sliding mode ABS control strategy and PID rear wheel control logic are developed to improve the brake and cornering performances, and enhance the stability during emergency maneuvers. The performances of the controllers are evaluated under the various driving road conditions and driving situations. The numerical study shows that the proposed full car model is sufficient to accurately predict the vehicle response. The proposed ABS controller reduces the stopping distance and increases the vehicle stability. The results also prove that the ABS controller can be employed to a four wheel steering vehicle and improves its performance. The four wheel steering vehicle with PID rear wheel controller shows increase of stability when a vehicle speed is high and sharp cornering maneuver when a vehicle speed is low compared to that of a two wheel steer vehicle.
This study is to propose and develop an integrated dynamics control system to improve and enhance the lateral stability and handling performance. To achieve this target, we integrate an AFS and a 4WS systems with a fuzzy logic controller. The IDCS determines active additional steering angle of front wheel and controls the steering angle of rear wheel. The results show that the IDCS improves the lateral stability and controllability on dry asphalt and snow paved road when double lane change and step steering inputs are applied. Yaw rate of the IDCS vehicle tracks reference yaw rate very well and body slip angle is reduced about by 50%. Response time of the IDCS vehicle is also decreased.
In this paper, we address vehicle modeling and dynamic analysis of four wheel steering systems (4WS). 4WS is one of the devices used for the improvement of vehicle maneuverability and stability. All research done here is based on a production vehicle from a manufacturer. To study actual system response, a three dimensional, full vehicle model was created. In past research of this type, simple, two dimensional, bicycle vehicle models were typically used. First, we modelled and performed a dynamic analysis on a conventional two wheel steering(2WS) vehicle. The modeling and analysis for this model and subsequent 4WS vehicles were performed using ADAMS(Automatic Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical Systems) software. After the original vehicle model was verified with actual experiment results, the rear steering mechanism for the 4WS vehicle was modelled and the rear suspension was changed to McPherson-type forming a four wheel independent suspension system. Three different 4WS systems were analyzed. The first system applied a mechanical linkage between the front and rear steering mechanisms. The second and third systems used, simple control logic based on the speed and yaw rate of the vehicle. 4WS vehicle proved dynamic results through double lane change test.
A vehicle stability control logic for 4WD hybrid electric vehicle is proposed using the regenerative braking of the rear motor and electronic brake force distribution module. Performance of the stability control logic is evaluated for J-turn and single lane change. It is found from the simulation results that the regenerative braking at rear motor is able to provide improved stability compared with the vehicle performance without my stability control. Additional improvement can be achieved by applying the regenerative braking plus electronic brake farce distribution control. It is expected that the regenerative braking offers additional improvement of the fuel economy as well as the vehicle stability control.
