  • This paper deals with the development and testing of a large-scale, realtime digital power system simulator for the Korean Electric Power Corporation. The KEPS Simulation Center is located at KEPCO's research center (KEPRI) in Taejon, South Korea and has been operated since September 2001. The KEPS Simulation Center includes a wide range of off line power system simulation and analysis tools, as well as an advanced realtime digital simulator for the study of large scale AC and DC system performance. Because the application scope of the KEPS realtime simulator is broad and because the network models being considered are significantly larger and more complex than in traditional realtime simulator applications, many developments and tests have been required during the course of the project. In this paper, the authors describe some of these developments and present results from various benchmark tests that have been performed.

  • A realtime simulator using an explicit integration method is introduced to improve the solving performance for the dynamic analysis of a wheeled vehicle. Because a full vehicle system has many parts, the development of a numerical technique for multiple d.o.f. and ground contacts has been required to achieve a realtime dynamics analysis. This study proposes an efficient realtime solving technique that considers the wheeled vehicle dynamics behavior with full degrees of freedom and wheel contact with soft ground such as sand or undersea ground. A combat vehicle was developed to verify this method, and its dynamics results are compared with commercial programs using implicit integration methods. The combat vehicle consists of a chassis, double wishbone type front and rear suspension, and drive train. Some cases of vehicle dynamics analysis are carried out to verify the realtime ratio.

  • A thermal vacuum chamber is mainly used to simulate thermal environments of a test satellite in satellite orbits in which daily temperature variations range from 80K to above 400K depending on solar radiation under the vacuum below $10^{-4}$ torr. The test facility is quite complex and consists of expensive parts. So any modification of control software is discouraged in fear of unexpected system failure. The purpose of this study is to develop a realtime dynamics model of the thermal vacuum chamber in view of controller design and simulate its electrical inputs and outputs for interface with a PLC (programmable logic controller). A PLC program that was used in the thermal vacuum chamber is applied to the realtime simulator. The realized simulator dynamics is found to be quite similar to that of the thermal vacuum chamber and serve to an appropriate plant to verify the control performance of a programmed PLC.

  • This paper presents a simplified dynamics of railway vehicle for a tilting train simulator. The tilting train simulator has 6 electric-driven actuators and a visualization system with 1600mm-diameter dome screen. The each system shares the data by ethernet. In order to analyze the dynamics of railway vehicle and transfer the results of the analysis to the other system of the tilting train simulator in realtime base, We assumed the tilting train as a simplified rigid body model with primary and secondary suspensions. The simplified vehicle model has a 17-DOF. Through the running analysis on the tight curve with various radius, we verified the simplified vehicle model.

  • Control network adopted in the national power-plant or manufactory are mostly vendor-dependent products, which have their own special specification, components and individual communication methods. These systems not only raise installation cost, but also bring many difficulties to maintenance and extension. To overcome these problems, this paper introduces a development and application case of a new "PC/Ethernet-based fieldbus" architecture and protocol to be used in mid-level fieldbus. The designed system has a basic idea of "3 Layers fieldbus over Standard-LAN" and implemented on PCs. PC gives user friendly environment. By using an open standard Ethernet in layer 1,2, the system has low cost, wide communication bandwidth and high compatibility. Layer 3 protocol designed for large realtime data communication makes user bypass TCP/IP layer and gives user direct access to the Ethernet. This new protocol eliminates potential collision of Ethernet, and transmits large periodic/non-periodic control data by using long-frame/wide-bandwidth of Ethernet effectively, and offers simple API-Services to the upper layer. Since the system have installed in H-power plant simulator and U-nuclear power plant simulator in Korea, it have been proved to be efficient and stable without any trouble in realtime communication service for full-scope plant simulator that has a lot of control elements.

  • This paper presents a dynamic model of railway vehicle for the development of a 6-axis tilting train simulator. The tilting train simulator will be used to verify the tilting electronics and tilting control algorithm that are to be applied to the Korean tilting train. The tilting train simulator is composed of 6 electric-driven actuators, a track generation system, a graphic user interface, and a visualization system with a 1600mm-diameter dome screen. The each system shares the data by means of ethernet network in realtime. In this study, a train model of 9-DOF with a force generation system to tilt train body has been developed. The dynamic analysis for the straight track running and curve negotiation of a railway vehicle can be performed in the model. In this study, a verification study for the application of the model to the simulator has been conducted under curving situation on the track with different radii.

  • Analyzing the observational data of volcanic activities around the northern part of Korean peninsula, the odds of volcano eruption increases continuously. For example, the cumulative seismic moment and frequence observed near Mt. Baekdu show a sudden increased values. In this study, predicting the diffusion of volcanic ash for two cases were carried out by using interactive realtime simulator, which was developed during last 2 years as a research and development project. The first case is Sakurajima volcano (VEI=3) erupted in August 2013. The second case is assumed as the volcanic eruption at Mt. Baekdu (VEI=7) under landing circumstance of typhoon Maemi (August 2003) in Korean peninsula. The synoptic condition and ash diffusion for the two cases were simulated by WRF(Weather Research and Forecast) model and Lagrangian dispersion model, respectively. Comparing the simulated result of the first case (i.e., Sakurajima volcano) with satellite image, the diffusion pattern show acceptable result. The interactive realtime simulator can be available to support decision making under volcanic disaster around East Asia by predicting several days of ash dispersion within several minutes with ordinary desktop personal computer.

  • The simulation of target-scattered echo with the moving sonar platform and target in 3-dimensional ocean environment is essential to validate and evaluate the performance of a sonar system. This paper presents the improved target signal simulation on the basis of the highlight(HL) model and its realtime algorithm. In order to simulate the scattering highlight, the highlight is represented as a directional scatterer. The realtime generation algorithm of the target signal is realized by use of DSP chip, TMS320C40, where the 40 channels are equally separated to form a parallel processing task in 4 processors. The presented realtime-version of target signal simulation can be used as a target signal simulator in the development of ACM(Acoustic Counter Measure) and advanced sonar signal processing techniques.

  • According to the analysis of volcanic observation data around Korean peninsula, the activities of volcano increase continuously. For example, the volcanic eruption of Mt. Sakurajima is an example, and Mt. Baekdu can be another example potentially. In these regards, developing unified system including realtime prediction and 3D visualization of volcano ash are important to prepare the volcanic disaster systematically. In this technical report, an interactive simulator embedding dispersion algorithm and 3D visualization engine is developed. This system can contribute to the realtime prediction of volcanic disaster scientifically.

  • In this paper, we propose the visual simulation system for virtual reality motion rider system. The visual simulation system can apply verity virtual reality system. This paper deals with programs on 3D automatic creation of terrain, road design, and a realtime rendering program for the virtual reality system. For the 3D automatic creation of terrain, DEM data and rectangular grid method are applied. We can make two different road object with the road design program. One of them includes road definition, and the other is obtained by using 'NURBS curve.' Visual simulation is consisted by additional modeling and real-time rendering. We can apply the programs made in this way to visual system of driving simulator.
