In this paper, the response characteristics of CAN-based feedback control system are analyzed when message time delays through the network are considered. The message time delays are composed of computation time delay and communication time delay. The application layer of CAN communication is modeled mathematically to analyze two time delays, and the communication time delay is redefined under several assumption conditions. The CAN-based feedback control system is proposed as a target system that is the machining system with the three axes. The response characteristics of time delays in the proposed system are analyzed through computer simulations, and can be improved by the compensation using the PID tuning method to satisfy the design specifications of the system.
In recently years, distributed real-time software has performed important roles in various areas. Real-time applications should be performed with satisfying strict constraints on response time. Usually real-time applications are developed on the real-time supporting middleware such as TMO(Time-triggered, Message-triggered Object), CORBA/RT, and RTAI. However, it is not easy to develop applications using them since these real-time middleware are unfamiliar to programmers. In this paper, we propose an automatic code generator for real-time application based on TMO in order to reduce development costs. For increasing or reflecting the characteristics of TMO into the design model, SpM and SvM methods are added into the class diagram, which have time constraints as their properties. And behaviors of them are represented as separated regions on state machine diagram in different abstract level. These diagrams are inputted into TMO-based code automatic generator, which generates details of the TMO class. Our approach has advantages for decreasing effort and time for making real time software by automatically generating TMO codes without detailed knowledge of TMO.

Successful completion of a visual task in a predetermined time is very crucial to many operations such as piloting an aircraft. Although existing ergonomic interface models often provide a function of vision tests, it determines only the visibility at any given location. To complement this problem in existing models, the isoresponse time region considering the factors related to visual tasks is presented. Using a multiple regression model, equal response time regions were obtained within which mean response time is expected to be the same and is asymmetrical in shape. Among the factors considered, expectancy significantly decreased response time, and when cued, the effects of field heterogeneity, target uncertainty, density, size contrast and peripheral position on search time were less significant than those in unexpected cases. Response time and error rate, gender and visual acuity were not significantly correlated, and response time and age was positively correlated. These results are expected to be directly applicable to designing various visual tasks in real-life situations.
A method for estimating the floor response spectra (FRS) of elastic structures under earthquake excitations is proposed. The method is established based on a previously proposed direct estimation method for single degree of freedom systems, which generally overestimates the FRS of a structure, particularly in the resonance period range. A modification factor is introduced to modify the original method; the modification factor is expressed as a function of the period ratio and is determined through regression analysis on time history analysis results. Both real and artificial ground motions are considered in the analysis, and it is found that the modification factors obtained from the real and artificial ground motions are significantly different. This suggests that the effect of ground motion should be considered in the estimation of FRS. The modified FRS estimation method is further applied to a 10-story building structure, and it is verified that the proposed method can lead to a good estimation of FRS of multi-story buildings.
In this paper, the multi-point hydrogen detection system based on the combination of the hetero-core optical fiber SPR hydrogen tip sensor and interrogator by pseudorandom noise (PN) code correlation reflectometry has been developed. In a light intensity-based experiment with an LED operating at 850 nm, it has been presented that a transmitted loss change of 0.32dB was induced with a response time of 25 s for 4% $H_2$ in $N_2$ in the case of the 25-nm Au, 60-nm $Ta_2O_5$, and 5-nm Pd multi-layers film. The proposed sensor characteristic shows excellent reproducibility in terms of loss level and time response for the in- and out- $H_2$ action. In addition, in the experiment for multi-point hydrogen detection, all sensors show the real-time response for 4% hydrogen adding with reproducible working. As a result, the real-time multi-point hydrogen detection could be realized by means of the combination of interrogating system and hetero-core optical fiber SPR hydrogen tip sensors.
This paper presents a developing procedure of the CAN-based real-time simulator for car body control, aiming at replacing the actual W/H (Wiring Harness) and J/B(Junction Box) couple eventually. The CAN protocol, as one kind of field-bus communication, defines the lowest 2 layers of the ISO/OSI standard, namely, the physical layer(PL) and the data link layer(DLL), for which the CSMA/NBA protocol is generally adopted. For CPU, two PIC18Fxx8x's are used because of their built-in integration of CAN controller, large internal FLASH memory (48K or 64K), and their costs. To control J/B's and actuators, 2 controller boards are separately implemented, between which CAN lines communicate through CAN transceivers MCP255. A power motor for washing windshield, 1 door lock motor, and 6 blink lamps are chosen for actuators of the simulator for the first stage. For the software architecture, a polling method is used for the fast global response time despite its slow individual response time. To improve the individual response time and to escape from some eventual trapped-function loops, High/Low ports of the CPU are simply used, which increases the stability of the actuator modules. The experimental test shows generally satisfactory results in normal transmitting / receiving function and message trace function. This simulator based on CAN shows a promising usefulness of lighter, more reliable and intelligent distributed body control approach than the conventional W/H and J/B couple. Another advantage of this approach lies in the distributed control itself, which gives better performance in hard real-time computing than centralized one, and in the ability of integrating different modules through CAN.

In recent years, much attention has been paid to the development of intelligent vehicles that integrate automotive technology into the information technology, with the aim of improving user friendliness and stability. The representative function is a autonomous driving and a cruise control. In designing such vehicles, it is critical to address the real-time issues (i.e., real-time vehicle control and timely response). However, previous research excluded the real-time scheduling. We develop a model car with unmanned cruise control, design the real-time scheduler using cyclic executive to easily adapt the model car, and provide some insight into potential solutions based on various experiments.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare statistical methods to control response bias in nursing activity surveys. Methods: Data were collected at a medical unit of a general hospital. The number of nursing activities and consumed activity time were measured using self-report questionnaires. Descriptive statistics were used to identify general characteristics of the units. Average, Z-standardization, gamma regression, finite mixture model, and stochastic frontier model were adopted to estimate true activity time controlling for response bias. Results: The nursing activity time data were highly skewed and had non-normal distributions. Among the 4 different methods, only gamma regression and stochastic frontier model controlled response bias effectively and the estimated total nursing activity time did not exceeded total work time. However, in gamma regression, estimated total nursing activity time was too small to use in real clinical settings. Thus stochastic frontier model was the most appropriate method to control response bias when compared with the other methods. Conclusion: According to these results, we recommend the use of a stochastic frontier model to estimate true nursing activity time when using self-report surveys.

In this paper, we propose the design of railway safety common data model to provide common transformation method for collecting data from railway facility fields to Real-time railway safety monitoring and control system. This common data model is divided into five abstract sub-models according to the characteristics of data such as 'StateInfoMessage', 'ControlMessage', 'RequestMessage', 'ResponseMessage' and 'ExtendedXXXMessage'. This kind of model structure allows diverse heterogeneous data acquisitions and its common conversion method to DDS (Data Distribution Service) format to share data to the sub-systems of Real-time railway safety monitoring and control system. This paper contains the design of common data model and its DDS Topic expression for DDS communication, and presents two kinds of data transformation case studied for verification of the model design.
A Discrete Event Dynamic System is a system whose states change in response to the occurrence of events from a predefined event set. A major difficulty in developing analytical results for the systems is the lack of appropriate modeling techniques. This paper proposes the use of Real-time Temporal Logic as a modeling tool for the analysis and control of DEDS. The Real-time Temporal Logic Frameworks is extended with a suitable structure of modeling hard real-time constraints. Modeling rules are developed for several specific situations. It is shown how the graphical model can be translated to a system of linear equations and constraints.
