MTReadable: Arabic Readability Corpus for Medical Tests Information

  • Medical tests are very important part of the health monitoring process. It is performed for various reasons like diagnosing diseases, determining medications effectiveness, etc. Due to that, patients should be able to read and understand the available online tests and results in order to take proper decisions regarding their health condition. In fact, people are varying in their educational level and health backgrounds that make providing such information in an easily readable format by the majority of people considered as a challenge in the health domain since ever. This paper describes the MTReadable corpus which constructed for evaluating the readability of online medical tests. It covered 32 basic periodic check-up tests with over 36k words. These tests information are annotated and labelled based on three readability levels which are easy, neutral and difficult by three non-specialists native Arabic speakers. This paper contributes to enriching the Arabic health research community with an investigation of the level of readability of online medical tests and to be a baseline for further complex health online reports and information.

Analysis of the Continuity of Reading Passages in the 5th and 6th Grade Elementary School English Textbooks Based on Readability (이독성을 통한 초등학교 5, 6학년 영어 교과서 읽기 지문의 연계성 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the vertical and horizontal continuity between grades and publishers, respectively, by analyzing the readability of reading passages included in English textbooks for 5th and 6th grades of elementary school. In order to do so, a corpus was constructed with the reading passages contained in 10 textbooks, and the reading passages in each textbook were analyzed through Coh-Metrix. Also, it was examined whether there was a statistically significant difference between grades and publishers in readability through one-way ANOVA. The results are as follows. First, as a result of analyzing the difference in readability between publishers within the same grade, there was a statistically significant difference between fifth-grade textbooks in the L2 readability index. Second, as a result of analyzing the vertical continuity between grades within the publisher, the difficulty of textbook A was higher in grade 6 than grade 5 based on FRE and FKGL, which showed a statistically significant difference. On the other hand, when L2 readability was used as the standard, the difficulty of textbook B was lower in 6th grade than in 5th grade. This result seems to be because FRE and FKGL calculate readability based on sentence and word length, whereas L2 readability is based on content word overlap, word frequency, and syntactic similarity of sentences.

A Spelling Error Correction Model in Korean Using a Correction Dictionary and a Newspaper Corpus (교정사전과 신문기사 말뭉치를 이용한 한국어 철자 오류 교정 모델)

  • With the rapid evolution of the Internet and mobile environments, text including spelling errors such as newly-coined words and abbreviated words are widely used. These spelling errors make it difficult to develop NLP (natural language processing) applications because they decrease the readability of texts. To resolve this problem, we propose a spelling error correction model using a spelling error correction dictionary and a newspaper corpus. The proposed model has the advantage that the cost of data construction are not high because it uses a newspaper corpus, which we can easily obtain, as a training corpus. In addition, the proposed model has an advantage that additional external modules such as a morphological analyzer and a word-spacing error correction system are not required because it uses a simple string matching method based on a correction dictionary. In the experiments with a newspaper corpus and a short message corpus collected from real mobile phones, the proposed model has been shown good performances (a miss-correction rate of 7.3%, a F1-measure of 97.3%, and a false positive rate of 1.1%) in the various evaluation measures.

Yun Chi-ho's English Diary and English Writing Education (윤치호 영어 일기와 영어 쓰기 교육)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze Yun Chi-ho's English Diary both quantitatively and qualitatively. A corpus of 574 diary texts is created from his first and last years in an English speaking environment, and analyzed by two language analysis programs, RANGE and Coh-Metrix. His later diaries have more words in total, and longer average sentence length than his earlier diaries. Also, the Coh-Metrix indices in syntactic complexity and referential cohesion are higher in his later diaries. A qualitative analysis of 57 diary texts shows some improvement in his use of language forms. The most frequent topics of his journals are Christianity, everyday life, politics of Korea and his English studies. His constant effort to keep his journal and correspondence with foreigners, almost all in English, is estimated as one of the key factors for his successful English acquisition. Educational implications for EFL writing courses are discussed.
