This paper presents a new design concept for ocean nuclear power plants (ONPPs) using a tension leg platform (TLP). The system-integrated modular advanced reactor, which is one of the successful small modular reactors, is mounted for demonstration. The authors define the design requirements and parameters, modularize and rearrange the nuclear and other facilities, and propose a new total general arrangement. The most fundamental level of design results for the platform and tendon system are provided, and the construction procedure and safety features are discussed. The integrated passive safety system developed for the gravity based structure-type ONPP is also available in the TLP-type ONPP with minor modifications. The safety system fully utilizes the benefits of the ocean environment, and enhances the safety features of the proposed concept. For the verification of the design concept, hydrodynamic analyses are performed using the commercial software ANSYS AQWA with the Pierson-Moskowitz and JONSWAP wave spectra that represent various ocean environments and the results are discussed.
Many advanced reactor designs rely on passive systems to fulfill safety functions during accident sequences. These systems depend heavily on boundary conditions to induce a motive force, meaning the system can fail to operate as intended because of deviations in boundary conditions, rather than as the result of physical failures. Furthermore, passive systems may operate in intermediate or degraded modes. These factors make passive system operation difficult to characterize within a traditional probabilistic framework that only recognizes discrete operating modes and does not allow for the explicit consideration of time-dependent boundary conditions. Argonne National Laboratory has been examining various methodologies for assessing passive system reliability within a probabilistic risk assessment for a station blackout event at an advanced small modular reactor. This paper provides an overview of a passive system reliability demonstration analysis for an external event. Considering an earthquake with the possibility of site flooding, the analysis focuses on the behavior of the passive Reactor Cavity Cooling System following potential physical damage and system flooding. The assessment approach seeks to combine mechanistic and simulation-based methods to leverage the benefits of the simulation-based approach without the need to substantially deviate from conventional probabilistic risk assessment techniques. Although this study is presented as only an example analysis, the results appear to demonstrate a high level of reliability of the Reactor Cavity Cooling System (and the reactor system in general) for the postulated transient event.
The Emergency Core Cooling System in current nuclear power plants typically has a considerable number of complex functions and largely cumbersome operator interfaces. Functions for initiation, switch-over between various phases of operation, interlocks, monitoring, and alarming are usually performed by relays and analog comparator logic which are difficult to maintain and test. To improve problems of an analog based ECC (Emergency Core Cooling) System, the trip computer for ECCS based on Dynamic Safety System (DSS) is implemented. The DSS is a computer based reactor protection system that has fail-safe nature and performs a dynamic self-testing. The most important feature of the DSS is the introduction of test signal that send the system into a tripped state. The test signals are interleaved with the plant signals to produce an output which switches between a tripped and health state. The dynamic operation is a key feature of the failsafe design of the system. In this work, a possible implementation of the DSS using PLC is presented for a CANDU Reactor. ECC System of the CANDU Reactor is selected as the reference system.

Several vendors have recently been actively pursuing the development of integral pressurized water reactors (iPWRs) that range in power levels from small to large reactors. Integral reactors have the features of minimum vessel penetrations, passive heat removal after reactor shutdown, and modular construction that allow fast plant integration and a secure fuel cycle. The features of an integral reactor limit the options for placing control and safety system instruments. The development of instrumentation and control (I&C) strategies for a large 1,000 MWe iPWR is described. Reactor system modeling-which includes reactor core dynamics, primary heat exchanger, and the steam flashing drum-is an important part of I&C development and validation, and thereby consolidates the overall implementation for a large iPWR. The results of simulation models, control development, and instrumentation features illustrate the systematic approach that is applicable to integral light water reactors.

The Dynamic Safety System (DSS) is a compute. based reactor protection system that has fail-safe nature and perform dynamic self-testing. In this paper, the implementation of DSS in PLC is presented for PWR. In order to choose adequate PLC implementation model of DSS, the reliability analysis is performed. The KO-RI unit 2 Nuclear power plant is selected as the reference plant, and the verification is carried out using the KO-RI unit 2 simulator FISA-2.
This paper describes the work and the results of the final Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) for the Jordan Research and Training Reactor (JRTR). This final PSA was undertaken to assess the level of safety for the design of a research reactor and to evaluate whether it is probabilistically safe to operate and reliable to use. The scope of the PSA described here is a Level 1 PSA, which addresses the risks associated with core damage. After reviewing the documents and its conceptual design, nine typical initiating events were selected regarding internal events during the normal operation of the reactor. AIMS-PSA (Version 1.2c) was used for the accident quantification, and FTREX was used as the quantification engine. 1.0E-15/yr of the cutoff value was used to deliminate the non-effective Minimal Cut Sets (MCSs) when quantifying the JRTR PSA model. As a result, the final result indicates a point estimate of 2.02E-07/yr for the overall Core Damage Frequency (CDF) attributable to internal initiating events in the core damage state for the JRTR. A Loss of Primary Cooling System Flow (LOPCS) is the dominant contributor to the total CDF by a single initiating event (9.96E-08/yr), and provides 49.4% of the CDF. General Transients (GTRNs) are the second largest contributor, and provide 32.9% (6.65E-08/yr) of the CDF.
Based on the cases of fire and explosion accident in the chemical reactor, thr problems of preventive measures installed in the chemical reactor were analyzed. The chemical reactors produce a variety of chemicals and install rupture disk to relieve the pressure that rises sharply in the event of a runaway reaction. In order to maintain the function of the rupture disk, the emissions was allowed to be discharged into the atmosphere, resulting in fire and explosion accidents. As a way to improve this, safety instrumented system based on the safety integrity level(SIL3) was applied as a preventive measures for chemical reactor. Two emergency shur-off valves are installed in series on pipe dropping raw materials for chemical reactor so that the supply of raw materials can be cut off even if only one of the two emergency shut-off valves is operated during the runaway reaction. The automatic on/off valve is installed in parallel in the supply pipe of the reaction inhibitor so that the reaction inhibitor can be injected even if only one valve is opened at the time of the runaway reaction.
An advanced Research Reactor (ARR) consists of an open-tank-type reactor assembly within a light water pool and generates thermal power of 20 MW. The thermal power is including a fission heat in the core, a fuel generated heat temporary stored in the pool, a circulating pumps generated heat and a neutron reflecting heat in the reflector vessel of the reactor. In order to remove the heat load, the primary cooling system will be installed. In this study, the conceptual design of the primary cooling system has been carried out using a design methodology of HANARO within a permissible range of safety. As results, it has been established that the conceptual design of the primary cooling system including design requirements, performance requirements, design restrictions, system descriptions and system operation to maintain the system functions.
A study on reliability estimation of sequential-ordered multiple failure modes, which are sequentially ordered between failure modes in a considering system, was performed. Especially, an approach to estimate the probabilities of failure modes has been proposed under an assumption that failure modes are mutually exclusive and sequentially ordered by only a critical variable. A feasibility of the proposed approach were studied by a practical example, which is a reliability estimation of passive safety systems for a probabilistic safety assessment(PSA) of a very high temperature reactor(VHTR) that is under development as a future nuclear system with enhanced safety features. It is difficult to define a robust failure state of this nuclear system because of its enhanced radiation release characteristics, so the new approach is a useful concept to estimate not only its safety but also a PSA. A feasibility study applied two failure modes(e.g., small and large release of radioactive materials) with considering the integrated behavior of this nuclear system. It is expected that the multiple release states for a practical estimation can be easily extended to the aforementioned example. It was found out that the proposed approach was a useful technique to cover the unfavorable features of this nuclear system as to performing a VHTR PSA.
The Floating Absorber for Safety at Transient (FAST) is a safety device used in the innovative Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (iSFR). The FAST insert negative reactivity under transient or accident conditions. However, behavior of the FAST is still unclear under transient conditions. Therefore, the existing Floating Absorber for Safety at Transient Analysis Code (FASTAC) is improved to analyze the FAST movement by considering the reactivity and temperature distribution within the reactor core. The current FAST system is simulated under a single control rod withdrawal accident condition. In this investigation, the reactor thermal power does not return to its initial thermal power even if the FAST inserts negative reactivity. Only a 9 K of coolant temperature margin, in the hottest fuel assembly at EOL, can lead to unnecessary insertion of the negative reactivity. On the other hand, the FASTs cannot contribute to controlling the reactivity when normalized radial power is less than 0.889 at BOL and 0.972 at EOL. These simulation results suggest that the current FAST design needs to be optimized depending on its installed location. Meanwhile, the FAST system keeps the fuel, cladding and coolant temperatures below their limit temperatures with given conditions.
