Utilization of renewable energy is becoming increaingly important from the viewpoints of environmental protection and conservation of fossil fuel. However, the generating power of renewable energy is always fluctuating due to the environmental status. This paper presents a scheme for supervisory control of wind generation system with the energy storage and STATCOM to reduce the power variation. In this paper, we especially concentrate on constant power output control of wind generation system. In order to achieve this purpose, the coordinated control strategy between different types of energy storage system and reactive power compensation device. The proposed control scheme has been validated by PSCAD/EMTDC simulation. As a result, the proposed scheme can handle the power output of wind generation system with a constant value.
This paper proposes the power conversion mechanism of a bailer-charge-transfer zero-current-switching (CT-ZCS) circuit. The operation modes are analyzed and researched using state trajectory equations. The topology of CT-ZCS based on soft-switching inverters offers some merits such as: tracking the input reference signal dynamically, bearing load shock and short circuit, multiplying inverter N+1 redundancy parallel, coordinating power balance for easy control, and soft-switching commutation for high efficiency and large capacity. These advantages are distinctive from conventional inverter topologies and are especially demanded in AC drives: new energy generation and grid, distributed generation systems, switching power amplifier, active power filter, and reactive power compensation and so on. Prototype is manufactured and experiment results show the feasibility and dynamic voltage-tracking characteristics of the topology.
This paper suggests the control algorithm of a 3-phase 3-wire series active power filters which have harmonic voltage source and harmonic current source This suggested control algorithm can compensate harmonics which are generated by nonlinear load such as diode or thyristor converter and reactive power in 3-phase 3-wire power distribution system This control algorithm extracts a compensation voltage reference from performance function without phase transformation Therefore this control algorithm is simpler than any other conventional control algorithm. 3-phase 3-wire series active power filter and hybrid active power filter is manufactured and experiments are carried out for harmonic voltage source and harmonic current source to verify the effectiveness of presented control algorithm Experimental results are presented in this Paper, as well.
This paper proposes a three-phase current balancing strategy in a power transmission system employing distributed static series compensators (DSSCs). With the proposed variable quadrature voltage injection method, the DSSC emulates either an inductive or a capacitive impedance into the transmission line, and the magnitudes of the phase currents are balanced. Hence, the phase imbalances in the power transmission system are significantly reduced. As a result, the power transfer capability of the transmission lines can be improved. The operational principle of the DSSCs, the hardware structure and the control algorithm are described in detail. Finally, the theoretical analyses and the proposed strategy are experimentally verified through a scaled down transmission system with DSSC prototypes.
Transmission System Operators are governed by operational security standards that are applied in real time. During system disturbances, the System Operators must rely on the installed protection and control equipment, prior to human intervention. New power electronic solutions bring rapid and repeatable responses to disturbances, which will help System Operators to guarantee a stable system. Last year, Alstom completed the world's first competitively bid STATCOM to support the voltage on National Grid's 400kV network that supplies London and the Southeast from the north of the UK. It is rated ${\pm}75MVAr$ and forms part of a Static Var System (SVS) with a total rating of 0 to 225MVAr. This paper will describe the reasons for its size, location, its chain-link configuration and give examples of its operating performance. The paper will also describe the features that allow this STATCOM to deliver much more than reactive compensation in support of a wider transmission service objective, as system conditions require.
The performance analysis of a three-phase parallel active power filter that compensates PCC voltage and the unbalanced loads is presented in this paper. The proposed scheme in this paper employs a PWM voltage-source inverter and has two operation modes. Firstly, it operates as a conventional active filter with reactive power compensation when PCC voltage is within the 15% voltage drop range. Secondly, it operates as a voltage compensator when PCC voltage is not within the 15% voltage drop range. And both APF and voltage compensator compensate asymmetries caused by nonlinear loads. Finally, two methods of detecting the negative sequence are reviewed, and the validity of this scheme is investigated through analysis of simulation and experimental results for a prototype active power filter system rate at 10KVA.
The basic concepts, which are related to the PSS tuning conditions and performance conditions for the safe of determination of PSS gain and compensation of phasor lagging, are thoroughly investigated in this first part. The performance conditions, where the power system has the lowest inherent damping torque and PSS should provide maximum damping torque, are examined by analysing synchronizing torque and damping torque supplied by the voltage control loop at the oscillation frequency. PSS tuning conditions are also investigated by observing the phasor lagging and the gain, resulted from power system-generator-excitation system depending on operating conditions, such as generator active power, reactive power, transmission impedance and AVR gain. The basic concepts developed in this PartImake it possible to lay foundation for the discussion of PSS tuning in Part II.
It is necessary to measure the current of rotor for controlling the active and reactive power generated by the stator side of the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) system. There are offset and scaling errors in the current measurement. The offset and scaling errors cause one and two times current ripples of slip frequency in the synchronous reference frame of vector control, respectively. This paper proposes a compensation method to reduce their ripples. The stator current is variable according to the wind force but the rotor current is almost constant. Therefore input of the rotor current is more useful for a compensation method. The proposed method adopts the synchronous d-axis current of the rotor as the input signal for compensation. The ripples of the measurement errors can be calculated by integrating the synchronous d-axis stator current. The calculated errors are added to the reference current of rotor as input of the current regulator, then the ripples are reduced. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
For maintaining a reliable and secure power system, this paper describes the design and implement of a single-phase grid-connected inverter with an enhanced phase-locked loop (PLL) and excellent power control performance. For designing the enhanced PLL and power regulator, a full-bridge voltage-controlled inverter (VCI) is investigated. When the grid frequency deviates from its reference values, the output frequency of the VCI is unstable with an oscillation of 2 doubling harmonics. The reason for this oscillation is analyzed mathematically. This oscillation leads to an injection of harmonics into the grid and even causes an output active power oscillation of the VCI. For eliminating the oscillation caused by a PLL, an oscillation compensation method is proposed. With the proposed method, the VCI maintains the original PLL control characteristics and improves the PLL robustness under grid frequency deviations. On the basis of the above analysis, a power regulator with the primary frequency and voltage modulation characteristics is analyzed and designed. Meanwhile, a small-signal model of the power loops is established to determine the control parameters. The VCI can accurately output target power and has primary frequency and voltage modulation characteristics that can provide active and reactive power compensation to the grid. Finally, simulation and experimental results are given to verify the idea.
This research article presents a novel approach based on an instantaneous active and reactive power component (p-q) theory for generating reference currents for shunt active filter (SHAF). Three-phase reference current waveforms generated by proposed scheme are tracked by the three-phase voltage source converter in a hysteresis band control scheme. The performance of the SHAF using the p-q control strategy has been evaluated under various source conditions. The performance of the proposed control strategy has been evaluated in terms of harmonic mitigation and DC link voltage regulation. In order to maintain DC link voltage constant and to generate the compensating reference currents, we have developed Fuzzy logic controller with different (Trapezoidal, Triangular and Gaussian) fuzzy M.F.s. The proposed SHAF with different fuzzy M.F.s is able to eliminate the uncertainty in the system and SHAF gains outstanding compensation abilities. The detailed simulation results using MATLAB/SIMULINK software are presented to support the feasibility of proposed control strategy. To validate the proposed approach, the system is also implemented on a real time digital simulator and adequate results are reported for its verifications.
