  • The purpose of this study was to quantitatively examine the biomechanical variables of Fouette turns for expert and beginner ballet dancers and to determine the difference in the variables between the two groups. sixteen female ballet dancers participated in this study. They were divided into an expert group(age, $25.38{\pm}1.92$ years; height, $168.38{\pm}4.66$ cm; mass, $49.63{\pm}4.41$ kg) and a beginner group(age, $20.88{\pm}1.13$ years; height, $161.63{\pm}7.42$ cm; mass, $48.88{\pm}3.64$ kg) depending on their ballet experience. Descriptive data were expressed as mean ${\pm}$ standard deviation (SD) for all variables including the duration, displacement of the center of the body, velocity of the center of the body, angle of the body segments, angular velocity of the body segments, ground reaction force, lower extremity torque, muscle activity, body weight, age, and body mass. An independence t-test was conducted to determine how the following variables differed between the beginners and experts: duration, displacement of the center of the body, velocity of the center of the body, angle of the body segments, angular velocity of the body segments, ground reaction force, lower extremity torque, and muscle activity. All comparisons were made at the p<0.05 significance level. The results show that the experts scored high on the biomechanical variables, although all the variables were not significant. Significant differences were found in the angle of body segments, angular velocity of the body segments, lower extremity torque, and muscle activity(p<0.05). The findings of this study demonstrate that the experts have the required skill to make an improved Fouette turn. The findings may also help ballet dancers to learn and understand the Fouette turn.

  • Joining of AIN ceramics to W and Cu by active-metal brazing method was tried with use of (Ag-Cu)-Ti alloy as insert-metal. Joints were produced under various conditions of temperature, holding time and Ti-content in (Ag-Cu) alloy Reaction and microstructural development in bonded interface were investigated through observation and analysis by SEM/EDS, EPMA and XRD. Joint strengths were measured by shear test. Bonded interface consists of two layers: an insert-metal layer of eutectic Ag- and Cu-rich phases and a reaction layer of TiN. Thickness of reaction layer increases with bonding temperature, holding time and Ti-content of insert-metal. It was confirmed that the growth of reaction layer is a diffusion-controlled process. Activation energy for this process was 260 KJ/mol which is lower than that for N diffusion in TiN. Maximum shear strength of 108 MPa and 72 MPa were obtained for AIN/W and AIN/Cu joints, respectively. Relationship between processing variables, joint strength and thickness of reaction layer was also explained.

  • A quantitative description of the principle of least motion is suggested. The reaction path function of electronic variables, its norm and the reaction path average energy, which are unique for a given reaction path on a potential energy surface of a reacting system, are defined and their characteristics are discussed. It is postulated that the norm of the function and the average energy can be used as a criterion for identification of the preferred path of a unimolecular isomerization reaction. For a molecule with a certain symmetry, the preferred path, with which Woodward-Hoffmann rule agrees, is immediately identified without laborious computation.

  • Polyurethane has been one of the most important materials for automobile elastic parts such as bumper, head rest, instrument panel and so on since it covers very wide range of mechanical characteristics with low production costs. The process variables such as formulation of ingredients and mold temperature, mixing speed, etc. can affect the quality of produced polyurethane foams so that process conditions should be determined appropriately. In this study, foaming behaviors of semi-rigid polyurethane were investigated by conducting cup foam tests with 2 major process variables such as environmental temperature and blowing agent content.

  • The characteristics of floc formation of the iron(Fe) ions was studied for developing the process treating the acid mine drainage. The metal ions in aqueous solution oxidized with oxygen in air, which generated hydrogen ion and lowered the pH of the aqueous solution. The iron(Fe) ions were formed into flocs by the acid-base reaction with the added $Ca(OH)_2$ for the neutralizing the solution. There were several variables affecting the formation, size and color of floc; whether air was present or not, air feeding rate, oxidizing time, concentration of $Ca(OH)_2$, the acid-base reaction time of the $iron(Fe)-Ca(OH)_2$. For proper formation of the $iron(Fe)-Ca(OH)_2$ flocs and developing the floc treating system, the control variables mentioned above should be considered.

  • Cerbera Odollam (sea mango) is a proven promising feedstock for the production of biodiesel due to its high oil content. Fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) were produced as the final reaction product in the transesterification reflux condensation reaction of sea mango oil and methyl acetate (MA). Potassium methoxide was used as catalyst to study its reacting potential as a homogeneous base catalyst. The initial part of this project studied the optimum conditions to extract crude sea mango oil. It was found that the content of sea mango sea mango oil was 55%. This optimum amount was obtained by using 18 g of grinded sea mango seeds in 250 ml hexane. The extraction was carried out for 24 hours using solvent extraction method. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to determine the optimum conditions of the reaction. The three manipulated variables in this reaction were the reaction time, oil to solvent molar ratio, and catalyst wt%. The optimum condition for this reaction determined was 5 hours reaction time, 0.28 wt% of catalyst and 1:35 mol/mol of oil: solvent molar ratio. A series of test were conducted on the final FAME product of this study, namely the FTIR test, GC-FID, calorimeter bomb and viscometer test.

  • The effect of compositional and processing variables on a nitriding reaction of silicon powder compact and subsequent post sintering of RBSN (Reaction-Bonded Silicon Nitride) was investigated. The addition of a nitriding agent enhanced nitridation rate substantially at low temperatures, while the formation of a liquid phase between the nitriding agent and the sintering additives at a high temperature caused a negative catalyst effect resulting in a decreased nitridation rate. A liquid phase formed by solely an additive, however, was found to have no effect on nitridation for the additive amount used in this research. The original site of a decomposing pore former was loosely filled by a reaction product ($Si_3N_4$), which provided a specimen with nitriding gas passage. For SRBSN (Sintered RBSN) specimens of high porosity, only a marginal dimensional change was measured after post sintering. Its engineering implication for near-net shaping ability is discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the effect of gait time on the gait patterns in elderly female OA and non-OA patients. The intensity of the subjects joint pain was surveyed by using WOMAC. Twelve subjects participated in this study. Measurements were taken for every the 10 minutes for 30 minutes after walking by a force plate. The following variables were recorded; double stance support time, Fx, Fy, Fx_time, Fz and so on. From the investigation of these variables the following was observed and concluded. The Fz values for the OA group was 1.01BW at the start and after 30 minutes was 1.04BW on the other hand the non-OA group's Fz1 was 1.08BW and 1.10BW. There was no significant difference calculated between the two groups and at the start and end of the experiment about all the variables. Therefore, it is concluded that there was no negative effect caused by walking for the 30 minutes and that it was an effective way of strengthen both respiratory and muscle function.

  • The joint in the concrete pavement provides a control against transverse or longitudinal cracking at slab, which may be caused by temperature or moisture variation during or after hydration. Without control of cracking, random crack may cause more serious distresses and result in structural or functional failure of pavement system. Sometimes, joint itself, purposed to control crack, may cause a distresses in joint due to its inherent weakness in structural integrity. Thus, the load transfer capacity in joint is very important for serviceability and durability. The purpose of this dissertation was to develop an evaluation system at joints of jointed concrete pavement using finite element analysis was performed using ILLI-SLAB program with a selected variables which might affect fairly to on the performance of transverse joints. The most significant variables were selected from precise analysis. It was concluded that the variables which most significantly affect to pavement deflections are the modulus of subgrade reaction(K) and the modulus of dowel/concrete interaction(G), and limiting criteria on the performance of joints at JCP at 300pci, 500,000 lb/in. respectively.

  • Decomposition reaction of methanol was conducted on Ni-Cu/SiO$_2$catalysts with several variables. Variables used in this study are S.V(Space Velocity), partial pressure of methanol, reaction temperature, and composition rate of Ni-Cu. The range of S.V is 10,000-30,000h$\^$-1/, the temperature range is 150-400$^{\circ}C$ and values of Cu/(Ni+Cu) are 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1. Over Ni/SiO$_2$, and Ni-Cu/SiO$_2$, the conversion rate of decomposition reaction of methanol arrived at 100% with increasing of temperature. At this time the selectivity of CO on Ni/SiO$_2$, was suddenly decreased, but on Ni-Cu/SiO$_2$, it was still sustained highly. The main products of reaction were CO and H$_2$, and by-products were CO$_2$ and CH$_4$mainly.
