  • Nanocomposite films were prepared by blending poly(amic acid)(PAA), poly(o-hydroxyamide)( PHA) and organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) that has a layered structure. XRD, SEM and TEM were used to study the morphology of PAA/PHA nanocomposites, and DMA, TGA, UTM, LOI and PCFC techniques were used to characterize the mechanical and thermal properties, and flame retardancy of the nanocomposites. TEM images revealed that OMMT layers were well dispersed in the PAA/PHA matrix and showed exfoliation and intercalation behavior. The addition of 3 wt% OMMT to the PAA/PHA blend increased the initial modulus of PAA/ PHA blend to 3.68 GPa that was ca. 48% higher than that of the control PAA/PHA blend. Above 4 wt%, however, both the initial modulus and the tensile strength were found to decrease, which might be due to the aggregation of OMMT in PAA/PHA matrix. When the OMMT content was below 3 wt%, the thermal stability and flame retardancy of the PAA/PHA nanocomposites increased with increasing OMMT content.

  • The effect of exposure times on the aging characteristics of carbon fiber/epoxy composite ring specimen was evaluated using an accelerating aging tester. Combined exposure conditions, such as temperature, moisture, and ultraviolet, were applied up to 3000 hours. Tensile properties and flexural properties including the effect of curvature were evaluated on the specimens subject to various exposure times through a material testing system. Their aging surfaces were observed through a scanning electron microscope. According to the results, tensile modulus was little affected by the exposure times. However, tensile strength, at the early stage of the exposure times, increased due to physical aging and curing reaction, but tensile strength slightly decreased due to degradation as the exposure times increased. The flexural modulus and flexural strength increased at the early stage of the exposure times, but slightly decreased as the exposure times increased. Aging surfaces of the specimens examined using the scanning electron microscope revealed a different morphology in various exposure times and provided useful information for identifying the degradation in mechanical properties of the composite subject to various exposure times.

  • Physical properties and flammability of polyhydroxyamides (PHAs) haying poly (ethylene-glycol) methyl ether (MPEG) and/or dimethylphenoxy pendants were studied by using DSC, TGA, FTIR, pyrolysis combustion flow calorimeter (PCFC), and X-ray diffractometer. The degradation temperatures of the polymers were recorded in the ranges of $276{\sim}396^{\circ}C$ in air. PCFC results showed that the heat release (HR) capacity and total heat release (total HR) values of the PHAs were increased with in-creasing molecular weight of MPEG. In case of M-PHA 2 annealed at $290^{\circ}C$, the values of HR capacity were siginificantly decreased from 253 to 42 J/gK, and 60% weight loss temperatures increased from 408 to $856^{\circ}C$ with an annealing temperature. The activation energy for the decomposition reaction of the PHAs showed in the range of $129.3{\sim}235.1kJ/mol$, which increased with increasing conversion. Tensile modulus of PHAs were decreased as increasing chain of MPEG, and showed an increase more than initial modulus after converted to PBOs.

  • It is important to calculate the natural frequency of a piled structure in the design stage in order to prevent resonance-induced damage to the pile foundation and analyze the dynamic behavior of the piled structure during an earthquake. In this paper, a simple but relatively accurate method employing a mass-spring model is presented for the evaluation of the natural frequency of a pile-soil system. Greatly influencing the calculation of the natural frequency of a piled structure, the spring stiffness between a pile and soil was evaluated by using the coefficient of subgrade reaction, the p-y curve, and the subsoil elastic modulus. The resulting natural frequencies were compared with those of 1-g shaking table tests. The comparison showed that the natural frequency of the pile-soil system could be most accurately calculated by constructing a stiffness matrix with the spring stiffness of the Reese (1974) method, which utilizes the coefficient of the subgrade reaction modulus, and Yang's (2009) dynamic p-y backbone curve method. The calculated natural frequencies were within 5% error compared with those of the shaking table tests for the pile system in dry dense sand deposits and 5% to 40% error for the pile system in saturated sand deposits depending on the occurrence of excess pore water pressure in the soil.

  • Recently, since industrial waste and life waste leaped into a pollution source, the building material used now a days is striking the limit. The purpose of this paper is to investigate an application of recycled coal ash using non-sintering method in the construction field. Accordingly, compressive strength, elastic modulus and drying shrinkage were experimentally studied for hardened coal ash using the non-sintering method. Also, Lineweaver and Burk method were applied to the regression analysis of drying shrinkage for the proposal equation. Elastic modulus, compressive strength of material become the basis properties of structural design. And these properties by age for hardened coal ash are important because of change by pozzolan reaction. This hardened coal ash is weak for tensile stress like that of concrete. And drying shrinkage is very important factor to make huge tensile force in early age. In the results, although some differences were shown when comparing coal ash with mortar or concrete, the application as a building material turned out to be possible if further researches were carried out. And the shrinkage characteristic of hardened coal-ash reveals to be similar to that of moderate heat cement.

  • Recently, the trend toward larger architectural structures continues and accelerates demand for Ultra High Strength Concrete (UHSC) which satisfies structural performance. However, UHSC has weakness in fire and the performance tests are required. In this paper, the change of mechanical properties of 100 MPa grade UHSC exposed to high temperatures ($20^{\circ}C{\sim}800^{\circ}C$) was observed to develop high temperature material model of UHSC: residual compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, property of stress-strain on monotonous loading and property of stress-strain on cyclic loading. In addition, TG/DTA and SEM Images analyses were performed to investigate chemical and physical characteristics of UHSC, and the results of this research were compared with those of previous studies. As a result, UHSC at the heating temperature of $300^{\circ}C$ showed a sharp decrease of residual compressive strength and modulus of elasticity. And It was shown that UHSC had a plastic behavior at more than $400^{\circ}C$ on the cyclic loading and revealed a same tendency in both monotonous and cyclic loading of all heating temperatures. In addition, through TG/DTA and SEM images analyses compared with those from previous studies, it was shown that the deterioration of concrete inner tissue, water evaporation and chemical reaction caused the decrease of residual compressive strength and modulus of elasticity.

  • The hyaluronic acid (HA) with excellent biocompatibility has been combined with lactide, the ester dimer of polylactide, with good biodegradability to produce biocompatible materials which can control the period of degradation in a human body. By freeze frying method, HA and lactide were crosslinked with crosslinking agent, 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC). Degree of lactide and EDC reaction was determined by the analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Both lactyl group and EDC conversion increased as the mole ratio of lactide to HA increased from 5 to 13. The membrane swelled less and became more brittle with the more addition of lactyl group resulting from the higher mole ratio of lactide to HA. Swelling ratio decreased and tensile modulus increased due to the more addition of lactyl group as the EDC concentration increased or reaction temperature decreased. Drug release experiment from various membranes with different degree of crosslinking showed that permeability decreased with increasing degree of crosslinking. The degradation became slower with the more addition of lactyl group. Mechanical property and degradation rate of the synthesized membrane were shown to be controlled through adjusting operation parameters such as mole ratio, temperature, and crosslinking agent concentration.

  • The hyaluronic acid (HA) polymers cross-linked with lactide (LA) using the crosslinking agent, 1,3-butadiene diepoxide (BD), were prepared in order to develop a biomedical material for tissue engineering. The degree of lactide and BD reaction of the crosslinked polymer was determined by the analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Both degree of reaction and swelling ratio increased with BD concentration or LA/HA mole ratio. Tensile modulus decreased with increasing BD concentration or decreasing LA/HA mole ratio. Degradation was shown to be progressed at two different stages and became slow with increasing BD concentration. It was shown that the first stage degradation was mainly due to the decomposition of ester linkage in the crosslinked structure. The cell growth inhibition increased with BD concentration. Although cytotoxicity was slightly observed in the high BD concentration, the value was very low (below 6%) enough not to affect the cell growth.

  • Poly(amic acid) was synthesized from the reaction of p-PDA/ODA and PMDA/BPDA and silane oligomer containing epoxy group was also synthesized from the reaction of tetramethylorthosilicate (TMOS) and glycidol. After hybridizing poly (amic acid) and silane oligomer, they were effectively converted into polyimide/silica hybrid films by thermal imidization process. As the silica contents in hybrid films increased, CTE values decreased from 17 ppm/K to 10 ppm/K and the tensile modulus increased, in spite of decreasing tensile strength. In addition, the peel test showed that the adhesion strength of hybrid film was enhanced from $0.43kg_f/cm$ to $1.02kg_f/cm$. Therefore, it could be concluded that the polyimide/silica hybrid film is effective to enhance adhesion strength for FCCL films.

  • The formation microstructure and properties of novel ceramic composite materials by active filler con-trolled polymer pyrolysis were investigated. Polymethlsiloxane filled with W is of particular interested be-cause of the formation of ceramic bonded hard materials (WC-$W_{2}C$-$S_{1}OC$) for wear resistant applications. Highly metal-filled polymer suspensions were prepared and their conversion to ceramic composites by an-nealing in $N_{2}C$ atmosphere at 1000-$1600^{\circ}C$ were studied. Dimensional change porosity and phase distribution (filler network) were analyzed and correlated to the resulting material properties. Microcrystalline com-posites with the filler reaction products embedded to the resulting material properties. Microcrystalline com-posites with the filler reaction products embedded in a silicon oxycarbide glass matrix were produced. De-pending on the pyrolysis conditions ceramic composites with a density up to 95 TD% a hardness of 7-8.8GPa Yong's modulus of 220-230 GPa a fracture toughness of 6-6.8$MPam^{1/2}$ and a flexual strength of 380-470 MPa were obtained.
