  • Measurements of OH chemiluminescence in an atmospheric pressure, laboratory-scale dump combustor at equivalence ratios ranging from 0.63 to 0.89 were reported. The signal from the first electronically excited state of OH to ground state was detected through a band-pass filter with an ICCD. The objectives of this study are two: One is to see the effects of equivalence ratio on global heat release rate and local Rayleigh index distribution. To get the local Rayleigh index distribution, the line-of-sight images were inverted by tomographic method, such as Abel de-convolution. Another aim is to investigate the validity of using OH chemiluminescence acquired with an ICCD as a qualitative measure of local heat release. For constant inlet velocity and temperature, the overall intensities of OH emission acquired at different equivalence ratio showed periodic and higher value at high equivalence ratio. OH intensity averaged over one period of pressure increased exponentially with equivalence ratio. Local Rayleigh index distribution clearly showed the region of amplifying or damping the combustion instability as equivalence ratio increased. It could provide an information/insights on active control such as secondary fuel injection. Finally, local heat release rate derived from reconstructed OH images were presented for typical locations.

  • The effect of equivalence ratio and velocity on the stability of flame in dump combustor was studied in an atmospheric pressure, laboratory scathe dump combustor operating natural gas. Traditionally, peak-to-peak pressure, fluctuation of the heat release rate and Rayleigh index were used to find and control the combustion instability. Cross correlation coefficients, Ci,j which is defined as the normalized value of the integration of the product of two of the mixer pressure, dump plane pressure and heat release rate, are introduced to see whether the flame is stable or not. Ci,j shows more sensitive to combustion status than Rayleigh index in steadily burning flame. Also, the result indicates that the amplitude of Ci,j between heat release and mixer pressure goes up before the flame at the rich de-stabilizing equivalence ratio near $\psi$=0.85. t means Ci:j at this case has a potential to detect the de-stablizing moment in prior to becoming unstable in dump combustor.

  • Measurements of heat release are very important for controling combustion instabilities, which are closely connected with combustion instabilities. $OH^{\ast}$ images were acquired through a ICCD in this study, which were in use as indicating index of the reacting region, global and local heat release rate in the lean premixed combustion. The objectives of this study are to see the effect of equivalence ratio on global heat release rate and local Rayleigh index distribution. The local Rayleigh index distribution was acquired by information from central section of flame. This information was from the line-of-sight images which were inverted by the Abel de-convolution. In each condition, the mean value of heat release increased exponentially with equivalence for a periodic time. Local Rayleigh index distribution cleary showed the region of amplifying or damping the combustion instability as the equivalence ratio increased. This could provide an insight on the region of combustion instability and the structure of flames on the equivalence ratio.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of non-fundamental multi-mode combustion instability and the effects of high-harmonic components on the Rayleigh criterion. Phenomenological observations of multi-harmonic-mode dynamic pressure waves regarding the intensity of harmonic components and the source of wave distortion have been explained by introducing examples of second- and third-order harmonics at various amplitudes. The amplitude and order of the harmonic components distorted the wave shapes, including the peak and the amplitude, of the dynamic pressure and heat release, and consequently the temporal Rayleigh index and its integrals. A cause-and-effect analysis was used to identify the root causes of the phase delay and the amplification of the Rayleigh index. From this analysis, the skewness of the dynamic pressure turned out to be a major source in determining whether multi-mode instability is driving or damping, as well as in optimizing the combustor design, such as the mixing length and the combustor length, to avoid unstable regions. The results can be used to minimize errors in predicting combustion instability in cases of high multi-mode combustion instability. In the future, the amount of research and the number of applications will increase because new fuels, such as fast-burning syngases, are prone to generating multi-mode instabilities.

  • Combustion instabilities are an important concern associated with lean premixed combustion. Laboratory-scale dump combustor was used to understand the underlying mechanisms causing combustion instabilities. Experiments were conducted at atmospheric pressure and sound level meter was used to track the pressure fluctuations inside the combustor. Instability maps and phase-resolved OH chemiluminescence images were obtained at several conditions to investigate the mechanism of combustion instability and relations between pressure wave and heat release rate. It showed that combustion instability was susceptible to occur at higher value of equivalence ratio (>0.6) as the mean velocity was decreased. Instabilities exhibited a longitudinal mode with a dominant frequency of ∼341.8 Hz, which corresponded to a quarter wave mode of combustor. Heat release and pressure waves were in-phase when instabilities occurred. Rayleigh index distribution gave a hint about the location where the strong coherence of pressure and heat release existed. These results also give an insight to the control scheme of combustion instabilities. Emission test revealed that NOx emissions were affected by not only equivalence ratio but also combustion instability.

  • Nonlinear internal modals interactions analysis of axially functionally graded nanorods is evaluated on the basis of nonlocal elasticity theory and Rayleigh beam model for the first time. Functionally graded materials can be determined as nonhomogeneous composites which are obtained by combining of two various materials in order to get a new ideal material. In this research, material properties of nanorods are supposed to be calmly varied along the axial direction. Hamilton's principle is used to derive the equations with consideration of Von-Kármán's geometrically nonlinearity. Harmonic Differential Quadrature (HDQ) and Multiple Scale (MS) solution techniques are used to derive an approximate-analytic solution to the linear and nonlinear free axial vibration problem of non-classical nanorods for clamped-clamped and clamped-free boundary conditions. A parametric study is carried out to indicate the effects of index of AFG, aspect ratio, mode number, internal resonances and nonlinear amplitude on nonlinear nonlocal frequencies of axially functionally graded nanorods. Also, the effects of nonlocal and nonlinear coefficients and AFG index on relationships of internal resonances have been investigated. The presented theatrical-semi analytical model has the ability to predict very suitable results for extracting the internal modal interactions in the AFG nanorod.

  • Behaviors of lean premixed flame of propane/air and methane/air flame anchored by a pilot flame in a tube were investigated experimentally varying the mean velocity from 10 to 140 cm/s and the equivalence ratio from 0.45 to 0.8. Behaviors of both flames are divided into five regions of stable, flash-back, tail-out, flickering and vibrating. General characteristics of each region and Le number effect are investigated. Two main instabilities, flickering and vibration, are both unstable but the instability mechanism, the frequency and the amplitude of pressure fluctuation are different. In the edge of the vibrating region, pressure fluctuation repeats generation and extinction. Repeated growth and decrease of the amplitude of pressure fluctuation are explained by Rayleigh#s index.

  • Resonating thermal lags of solid fuel with heat transfer oscillations generated by boundary layer oscillation is the primary mechanism of the occurrence of the LFI (Low Frequency Combustion Instability) in hybrid rocket combustion. This study was experimentally attempted to confirm that how the boundary layer was perturbed and led to the LFI. Special attention was also made on oxidizer swirl injection to investigate the contribution to combustion stabilization. Also the overall behavior of fluctuating boundary layer flow and the occurrence of the LFI was monitored as swirl intensity increased. Fluctuating boundary layer was successfully monitored by the captured image and POD (Proper Orthogonal Decomposition) analysis. In the results, oscillating boundary layer became stabilized as the swirl intensity increases. And the coupling strength between high frequency p', q' diminished and periodical amplification of RI (Rayleigh Index) with similar frequency band of thermal lag was also decreased. Thus, results confirmed that oscillating axial boundary layer triggered by periodic coupling of high frequency p', q' is the primary mechanism to excite thermal resonance with thermal lag characteristics of solid fuel.

  • An orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with coded direct index modulation(OFDM-CDIM) system that can achieve higher performance and spectral efficiency than previous OFDM systems is proposed. Previous OFDM with index modulation(IM) and OFDM-IM using dual modes systems allocate additional data to indices of respective subcarriers through combining operation with high complexity and then transmit them. However, the proposed system directly allocates the mode selection information to each subcarrier without performing additional operations. Then, the system selects and transmits one symbol in the selected mode. Furthermore, only the data allocated to the index of the subcarrier is encoded, and a good performance improvement effect is obtained with a high code rate. Simulation results show quantitatively that an OFDM-CDIM system using four modes improves bit error rate performance and transmission efficiency in additive white Gaussian noise and Rayleigh fading channel environments compared with a conventional OFDM system using 4-ary quadrature amplitude modulation.
