  • In this letter, we propose a novel computational integral imaging reconstruction technique based on a lenslet array model. The proposed technique provides improvement of viewing images by extracting multiple pixels from elemental images according to ray tracing based on the lenslet array model. To show the feasibility of the proposed technique, we analyze it according to ray optics and present the experimental results.

  • Nowadays, SELENE-2 is under development for the moon explorer rover in Japan. AXS(Active X-ray Spectrometer) sensor development among the candidated payloads will be on going by the world-wide co-operation. The thermal design, analysis and test will be specially performed by Korean institutes. CFD techniques are used for the conceptual design and analysis. Thin-shell plate meshes being applied by Monte-Carlo Ray Tracing Method are generated for the thermal radiation analysis. Lumped capacity model is employed for the thermal conduction simulation of the AXS payload itself. Various shapes of the payload configuration with thermal boundary conditions are proposed and selected on the purpose of the analysis of the initial design. The results of the analysis are supposed to be used as the baseline for the further detailed design of the AXS payload in the future.

  • The ray tracing method, which is one of many photorealistic rendering techniques, requires heavy computational processing to synthesize images. Parallel processing can be used to reduce the computational processing time. A parallel algorithm for the ray tracing has been implemented and executed for various images on transputer systems. In order to develop a scalable parallel algorithm, a processor farming technique has been exploited. Since each image is divided and distributed to each farming processor, the scalability of the parallel system and load balancing are achieved naturally in the proposed algorithm. Efficiency of the parallel algorithm is obtained up to 95% for nine processors. However, the best size of a distributed task is much higher in simple images due to less computational requirement for every pixel. Efficiency degradation is observed for large granularity tasks because of load unbalancing caused by the large task. Overall, transputer systems behave as good scalable parallel processing system with respect to the cost-performance ratio.

  • Despite the recent remarkable advances in the computing power of mobile devices, the heat and battery problems still restrict their performances, particularly compared to PCs. Therefore, in the application of the ray-tracing technique for high-quality rendering, the consideration of a method that traces only the secondary rays while the effects of the primary rays are generated through rasterization-based OpenGL ES rendering is worthwhile. Given that most of the rendering time is for the secondary-ray processing in such a method, a new volume-grid technique for dynamic scenes that enhances the tracing performance of the secondary rays with a low coherence is proposed here. The proposed method attempts to model all of the possible spatial secondary rays in a fixed number of sampling rays, thereby alleviating the visitation problem regarding all of the cells along the ray in a uniform grid. Also, a hybrid rendering pipeline that speeds up the overall rendering performance by exploiting the mobile-device CPU and GPU is presented.

  • The international EARTHSHINE mission is to measure 1% anomaly of the Earth global albedo and total solar irradiance using Amon-Ra instrument around Lagrange point 1. We developed a new ray truing based integrated end-to-end simulation tool that overcomes the shortcomings of the existing end-to-end performance simulation techniques. We then studied the in-orbit radiometric performance of the breadboard Anon-Ra visible channel optical system. The TSI variation and the Earth albedo anomaly, reported elsewhere, were used as the key input variables in the simulation. The output flux at the instrument focal plane confirms that the integrated ray tracing based end-to-end science simulation delivers the correct level of incident power to the Amon-Ra instrument well within the required measurement error budget of better than ${\pm}0.28%$. Using the global angular distribution model (ADM), the incident flux is then used to estimate the Earth global albedo and the TSI variation, confirming the validity of the primary science cases at the L1 halo orbit. These results imply that the integrated end-to-end ray tracing technique, reported here, can serve as an effective and powerful building block of the on-line science analysis tool in support of the international EARTHSHINE mission currently being developed.

  • In this paper we present an indoor propagation model for indoor wireless LAN service in the ISM band. We primarily use a 3D ray tracing as well as a patch scattering model in order to take into account the indoor fixtures. Therefore input parameters such as indoor environment parameters and antenna's types, polarizations are considered. As the results, we present fading characteristics and rms delay spread from time delay spread. In order to investigate the accuracy of the presented model, comparisons of predictions with measurement and simulations are performed in indoor wireless LAN service environments. The results show that measurements and simulations are very similar. Therefore in this paper, the effect of presented indoor propagation model is confirmed.

  • To customize individual characteristics of HRTF, a spherical model has been used for structural modeling technique. A pseudo-code of prolate spheroidal HRTF caused by incident acoustic point source is already developed, and it can be used a head shadow filter for structural modeling of HRTF. In this research, to see the necessity and efficiency of spheroidal head modeling, ITD optimization is performed on CIPIC HRTF database. From given cost function, ITD-optimized spheroidal head model, whose ITD information is the most matched version of measured ITD information, is found by varying head parameters subject by subject. By comparing results of ITD-optimized spheroids and ITD-optimized spheres, we concluded that a spherical head model is more efficient way of generating head shadow effect than a spheroidal head model does.

  • This paper describes a new algorithm named as ray following algorithm which is applied for high-resolution satellite image simulation. The problems of the conventional ray tracing algorithm are pointed out especially when terrain elevations vary abruptly. The proposed algorithm follows the directional ray vector sequentially and thoroughly in order to determine the crossing point of the ray with the terrain surface. This way of sequential height comparison method is regarded as the only way to obtain accurate surface cross-section when a highly variant digital surface model is used. The experimental results show and compare the validities of the conventional and proposed algorithms.
