  • Supersonic ejectors are simple mechanical components, which generally perform mixing and/or recompression of two fluid streams. Ejectors have found many applications in engineering. In aerospace engineering, they are used for altitude testing of a propulsion system by reducing the pressure of a test chamber. It is composed of three major sections: a vacuum test chamber, a propulsive nozzle, and a supersonic exhaust diffuser. This paper aims at the improvement of ejector-diffuser performance by focusing attention on reducing exhaust back flow into the test chamber, since alteration of the backflow or recirculation pattern appears as one of the potential means of significantly improving low supersonic ejector-diffuser performance. The simplest backflow-reduction device was an orifice plate at the duct inlet, which would pass the jet and entrained fluid but impede the movement of fluid upstream along the wall. Results clearly showed that the performance of ejector-diffuser system was improved for certain a range of system pressure ratios, where as there was no appreciable transition in the performance for lower pressure ratios and the orifice plate was detrimental to the ejector performance for higher pressure ratios. It is found that an appropriately sized orifice system should produce considerable improvement in the ejector-diffuser performance in the intended range of pressure ratios.

  • Laboratory-reared marbled flounder (Pleuronectes yokohamae) juveniles ($23.2{\pm}0.2mm$ total length; age 89 day) were sampled over a 48-h period to determine any diel patterns in RNA/DNA ratios. RNA/DNA ratios were highest during daytime periods (0800, 1100, 1400, 1700 h) and significantly reduced at night (2000, 2300, 0200, 0500 h). Findings from this study indicate a diel variation in biochemical condition and suggest that special care should be taken in designing sampling plans, including sampling time and data analysis to account for this source of variability.

  • This paper proposes the solutions predicting the coefficient of the thermal expansion changes of composites which include the fiber-like shaped ($a_1$ > ($a_2$ = ($a_3$) and the disk-like shaped (al = a2> a3) inclusions like two dimensional geometries, which has one aspect ratios, ${\alpha}$ = ($a_1$ /($a_3$). The analysis follows the procedure developed for elastic moduli by using the generalized approach of Eshelby’s equivalent tensor. The influences of the aspect ratios, on the effective coefficient of thermal expansion of composites containing aligned isotropic inclusions are examined. This model should be limited to analyze the composites with unidirectionally aligned inclusions and with complete binding to each other of both matrix and inclusions having homogeneous properties. The coefficient of thermal expansion of composites (${\theta}_{11}$,${\theta}_{22}$and ${\theta}_{33}$) are investigated. From material data of the composites with glass fiber in epoxy resin, the thermal expansions along the aspect ratio were obtained and similar to the Chow model. The longitudinal coefficients of thermal expansion ${\theta}_{11}$decrease, as the aspect ratios increase. However, the transverse coefficients of thermal expansion ${\theta}_{22}$increase or decrease, as the aspect ratios increase. And both of them decrease, as the concentration increases.

  • This paper presents an experimental study of six steel reinforced high strength concrete T-shaped short-limb shear walls configured with T-shaped steel truss under low cyclic reversed loading. Considering different categories of ratios of wall limb height to thickness, shear/span ratios, axial compression ratios and stirrup reinforcement ratios were selected to investigate the seismic behavior (strength, stiffness, energy dissipation capacity, ductility and deformation characteristics) of all the specimens. Two different failure modes were observed during the tests, including the flexural-shear failure for specimens with large shear/span ratio and the shear-diagonal compressive failure for specimens with small shear/span ratio. On the basis of requirement of Chinese seismic code, the deformation performance for all the specimens could not meet the level of 'three' fortification goals. Recommendations for improving the structural deformation capacity of T-shaped steel reinforced high strength concrete short-limb shear wall were proposed. Based on the experimental observations, the mechanical analysis models for concrete cracking strength and shear strength were derived using the equivalence principle and superposition theory, respectively. As a result, the proposed method in this paper was verified by the test results, and the experimental results agreed well with the proposed model.

  • Nowadays, recycling of recycled aggregates from the waste concrete is seriously demanded for the protection of environment and the shortage of aggregates owing to the large scale construction project. In this study, for the development of polymer composite recycling recycled aggregates from the waste concrete, twenty five specimens of the polymer composite were prepared with the five levels of replacement ratios of recycled aggregates (0, 25, 50, 75, 100%) and polymer-cement ratios (0,5, 10, 15, 20%), respectively. For the evaluation of the performance of polymer composite specimens, various physical properties such as compressive and flexural strengths, water absorption, hot water resistance, total pore volume and porosity were investigated. As a result, physical properties of polymer composite were remarkably improved with an increase of polymer cement ratios, but greatly decreased with the replacement ratios of recycled aggregates.

  • The objective of the present study was to investigate the characteristics of flow and wall shear stress under steady and pulsatile flow in the aneurysm. The numerical simulation using the software were carried out for the diameter ratios ranging from 1.5 to 3.0, Reynolds number ranging from 900 to 1800 and Womersley number, 15.47. For steady flow, it was shown that a recirculating vortex occupied the entire bulge with its core located closer to the distal end of the bulge and the strength of vortex increased with increase of the Reynolds number and diameter ratio. The position of a maximum wall shear stress was the distal end of the aneurysm regardless of the Reynolds number and diameter ratios. For the pulsatile flow, a recirculating flow at the bulge was developed and disappeared for one period and the strength of vortex increased with the diameter ratio. The maximum values of the wall shear stress increased in proportion to the diameter ratio. However, the position of a maximum wall shear stress was the distal end of the aneurysm regardless of the diameter ratios.

  • This paper predicts the cementing efficiency of fly-ash(FA) based on mortar test considering binder-water ratio and FA replacement ratio as experimental variables. The cementing efficiency prediction model proposed by statistical analysis enables us to estimate the value according to the binder-water ratio and FA replacement ratio of matrix. When FA replacement ratio is the same, the lower the binder-water ratio, the higher the estimated cementing efficiency. There are significant differences in the values according to binder-water ratio at FA replacement ratios of 15% or less, but there are almost no differences when FA replacement ratio is more than 15%. As the binder-water ratio increases, the variations in the values according to FA replacement ratio are great at FA replacement ratios of 15% or less. As the FA replacement ratios increase, the values increase for FA replacement ratios of 15% or less, but decrease for more than 15%. The values range from -0.71 to 1.24 at binder-water ratio of 1.67-2.86 and FA replacement ratio of 0-70%. The RMSE of the 28-day compressive strength predicted by modified water-cement ratio is 2.2 MPa. The values can be trusted, as there is good agreement between predicted strength and experimental strength.

  • In domestic, bearing wall apartment building have not rectangular walls but irregular walls which are designed at walls of various cross-sectional shapes such as H-shaped, T-shaped, Box-shaped and L-shaped. In these irregular walls connected with rigid joint each other, one side walls of irregular walls is expected to show effective behavior for rigid-jointed the other side walls. Moreover, previous studies have focused on simplifying irregular walls into rectangular walls because of the complication in structural design and analysis. So studies for variables affecting behaviors of irregular walls, such as aspect ratios and compressive strength of concrete, are insufficient. The objective of this study is to evaluate the behaviors of T-shaped structural walls with different concrete compressive strengths and aspect ratios by experimental works. Results of this experimental study show that flange wall is contributed to increase the flexural strengths by the variation of concrete strengths and aspect ratios, and that it is needed to evaluate the effect width of flange wall for rational wall design.

  • This paper examines the impact of mergers on the financial performance of the Jordanian banking sector. This paper applies the financial approaches in analysing the effects of mergers on Jordanian banks' performance for two the periods: four years pre-merger and four years' post-merger for the period from 2001 to 2009. The sample of the study solely contains the case of the merger of the Jordan Ahli Bank (AHLI bank) with Philadelphia Bank in 2005. Data are tested for normality using the Shapiro-Wilk Test and Kolmogorov Smirnov test. The financial ratios and a statistical technique as a Mann-Whitney U test were used to assess the significant differences in the financial performance of the selected banks pre- and post-merger by investigating the performance-related financial ratio groups that are expressed by leverage, liquidity, efficiency, and cash flow ratio. The results show that there is an insignificant improvement in the ratios of AHLI bank in the period after the merger, except for the superior result provided by this study indicating that the leverage ratios improved significantly. The reason for the insignificant improvement in financial ratios may be that the post-merger period corresponds to the period of the global financial crisis that began in 2007.

  • We investigated the nutritional status of the melania snail (Semisulcospira gottschei) using RNA/DNA ratios to evaluate the effect of feeding conditions (artificial versus natural) on the reaction times of the snails in a time course following starvation. In the short experiments (48 h), the RNA/DNA ratios of the artificial feeding groups were significantly higher than those of the natural groups. While two RNA/DNA ratio peaks were observed in the artificial food group during daytime, the natural food group showed a higher ratio at night. Under starvation conditions, the RNA content decreased whereas the DNA content was constant. The RNA/DNA ratios of the freshwater snail in both groups dramatically decreased after starvation and remained constant until the end of the experiment. We verified that the RNA/DNA ratio serves as an index of nutritional condition with respect to the effect of dietary differences. These results are important for understanding optimized aquaculture rearing conditions for this important commercial freshwater snail.
