Drop formation of Carbopol dispersions displaying yield stress, shear thinning and elastic properties in a flow-focusing microfluidic channel

  • The drop formation dynamics of a shear thinning, elastic, yield stress ($\tau_o$) fluid (Carbopol 980 (poly(acrylic acid)) dispersions) in silicone oil has been investigated in a flow-focusing microfluidic channel. The rheological character of each solution investigated varied from Netwonian-like through to highly non-Newtonian and was varied by changing the degree of neutralization along the poly (acrylic acid) backbone. We have observed that the drop size of these non-Newtonian fluids (regardless of the degree of neutralisation) showed bimodal behaviour. At first we observed increases in drop size with increasing viscosity ratio (viscosity ratio=viscosity of dispersed phase (DP)/viscosity of continuous phase (CP)) at low flowrates of the continuous phases, and thereafter, decreasing drop sizes as the flow rate of the CP increases past a critical value. Only at the onset of pinching and during the high extensional deformation during pinch-off of a drop are any differences in the non-Newtonian characteristics of these fluids, that is extents of shear thinning, elasticity and yield stress ($\tau_o$), apparent. Changes in these break-off dynamics resulted in the observed differences in the number and size distribution of secondary drops during pinch-off for both fluid classes, Newtonian-like and non-Newtonian fluids. In the case of the Newtonian-like drops, a secondary drop was generated by the onset of necking and breakup at both ends of the filament, akin to end-pinching behavior. This pinch-off behavior was observed to be unaffected by changes in viscosity ratio, over the range explored. Meanwhile, in the case of the non-Newtonian solutions, discrete differences in behaviour were observed, believed to be attributable to each of the non-Newtonian properties of shear thinning, elasticity and yield stress. The presence of a yield stress ($\tau_o$), when coupled with slow flow rates or low viscosities of the CP, reduced the drop size compared to the Newtonian-like Carbopol dispersions of much lower viscosity. The presence of shear thinning resulted in a rapid necking event post onset, a decrease in primary droplet size and, in some cases, an increase in the rate of drop production. The presence of elasticity during the extensional flow imposed by the necking event allowed for the extended maintenance of the filament, as observed previously for dilute solutions of linear polymers during drop break-up.

Flowable 복합레진의 slumping 경향과 유변학적 성질 (SLUMPING TENDENCY AND RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTY OF FLOWABLE COMPOSITES)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 flowable 복합레진의 조작성과 큰 연관이 있는 slumping 경향을 측정하는 방법을 제시하고 이와 관련이 있는 복합레진의 유변학적 특성을 고찰하였다. 5 종의 flowable 복합레진 (Aelitefil flow:AF, Filtek flow:FF, DenFil flow:DF, Tetric flow:TF and Revolution:RV)이 사용되었다. 주사기에 담긴 일정량의 복합레진을 일정 한 속도로 가압할 수 있는 장치를 이용하여 슬라이드글라스 위에 사출 한 후 $25^{\circ}C$의 실온에서 10 초 동안 slumping이 일어나도록 방치한 후 광중합 하였다. 복합레진의 slumping경향을 평가하기 위해 원뿔 형 혹은 동형으로 경화된 시편의 aspect ratio (밑면의 지름에 대한 높이의 비)를 구하였다. Slumping 경향과 복합레진의 유변학적 성질과의 관련성을 알아보기 위해 Rheometer를 사용하여 각진동수 ${\omega}=0.1-100$ rad/s의 범위에서 동적진동전단시험을 시행하여 복합레진의 복소점도를 구하였다. 복합레진의 slumping경향을 비교하기 위해 일원분산분석 및 Turkey's post test를 시행하였고 (${\alpha}<0.05$), 복소점도와 aspect ratio사이의 관련성을 알아보기 위해 회귀분석을 시행하였다 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 닭뼈 혼합비에 따른 Brown Sauce의 관능적 성질 (The Sensory Characteristics of Brown Sauce by Adding Different Ratio of Chicken Bone)

  • 닭뼈 첨가에 따른 브라운 소스의 pH, 점도, 탁도, 색도와 관능검사를 실시하였다. 닭뼈가 증가함에 따라 pH는 5.11에서 5.72로 증가하여(p<0.05) 부패 세균의 최적 발육범위인 $6.8{\sim}7.0$보다 낮았다. 닭뼈의 양이 증가할수록 점도가 증가하여(p<0.05) 닭뼈의 양을 조절함으로써 원하는 점도를 얻을 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 닭뼈의 비율이 높을수록 탁도가 탁하게 나타나 닭뼈가 소뼈보다 불투명한 용출성분이 많은 것으로 여겨진다. 닭뼈 함량이 증가함에 따라 Hunter's color "L" 값은 감소하였고 "a" 와 "b" 값은 증가하였다(p<0.05). 점도를 제외하고 색상, 향, 맛과 전체적인 평가는 소뼈의 양이 증가할수록 좋게 나타났지만(p<0.05) 닭뼈 : 소뼈 비율이 0.0 : 10.0과 2.5 : 7.5인 시료에서는 유의적인 차이가 없었다(p>0.05). 닭뼈와 소뼈를 2.5 : 7.5 비율로 제조한 소스는 관능적 성질 저하 없이 브라운 소스 제조가 가능하리라 여겨진다. 브라운 소스 제조에 닭뼈의 양을 조절하여 제조한다면 소뼈만을 사용한 소스와 비교하여 품질 저하 없는 소스 제조가 가능하리라 사료된다.

우지-해바라기유 오일혼합 바이오디젤의 전환 특성과 동점도 처리에 따른 오일혼합 바이오디젤의 동점도 변화 특성 (Conversion Characteristics on Beef-Tallow and Sunflower Oil Blend Biodiesel and its Treatment Method to Reduce Kinematic Viscosity)

  • 포화지방산 함량이 높은 우지와 불포화지방산 함량이 높은 식물성 유지인 해바라기유를 혼합한 혼합오일의 바이오디젤 전환특성을 규명하고 연료특성을 분석하였다. 다변량분산분석을 이용하여 도출한 기여율로 각 실험변수 (메탄올/유지 몰비, 오일혼합비) 가 바이오디젤 전환에 미치는 영향을 규명하였다. 또한, 바이오디젤의 고점도 문제를 해결하기 위해 가열과 초음파 조사의 방법을 적용하여 동점도 감소효과를 검증하였다. 연료별 온도 도와 동점도간의 상관관계식을 통해 동점도 감소를 위한 연료별 최적 온도를 도출하였다. 그 결과, 바이오디젤 전환율은 오일 혼합비 TASU7, 메탄올/유지 몰비 10에서 가장 우수한 것으로 나타났고 지방산 조성에 따라 연료특성에 차이가 있었다. 또한, 우지, 해바라기유 오일 혼합 바이오디젤의 연료특성 분석 결과 바이오디젤의 품질기준을 만족하는 것으로 나타났다. 바이오디젤의 고점도를 해결하기 위한 동점도 실험 결과 가열 방법의 동점도 감소 효과가 초음파 조사 방법에 비해 우수한 것으로 나타나 간단한 가열장치로 바이오디젤의 고점도를 해결할 수 있음을 확인하였다.

  • 본 연구에서는 반응성 희석제 함량에 따라 접착강도 및 물성을 향상시키기 위해 polyether polyol/polyester polyol, 4,4-dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate ($H_{12}MDI$), 2-butanone oxime (MEKO)를 사용하여 저점도 폴리우레탄 핫멜트를 합성하였다. 합성된 저점도 폴리우레탄 핫멜트의 물성은 FT-IR, viscosity meter 및 UTM 등을 통해 확인하였다. 반응성 희석제의 함량이 증가하고 NCO-blocked prepolymer가 감소함에 따라 저점도 폴리우레탄 핫멜트 접착제의 점도는 증가하였으며, OH-terminated oligomer, NCO-blocked prepolymer, 반응성 희석제 함량의 비가 1 : 0.5 : 0.5일 때 1.1 kgf/cm 접착강도를 나타내었다.

폴리머 용액에서의 각운동량 전달에 관한 연구 (Study on Angular Momentum Transfer in Polymer Solutions)

  • This investigation deals with the spin-up flows in a circular container of aspect ratio, 2.0. Shear front is generated in the transient spin-up process and propagating from the side wall to the central axis in a rotating container. Propagation of the shear front to the axis in a rotating container means the region acquires an angular momentum transfer from the solid walls. Propagating speed of the shear front depends on the apparent viscosity of polymer solution. Two kinds of polymer solutions are considered as a working fluid: one is CMC and the other is CTAB solution. CMC solution has larger apparent viscosity than that of water, and CTAB shows varying apparent viscosities depending on the applied shear rates. Transient and spatial variations of the apparent viscosities of the present polymer solutions (CTAB and CMC) cause different speeds of the propagating shear front. In practice, CMC solution that has larger values of apparent viscosity than that of water always shows rapid approach to the steady state in comparison of the behavior of the flows with water. However, for the CTAB solution, the speed of the propagating of the shear front changes with the local magnitude of its apparent viscosity. Consequently, the prediction of Wedemeyer's model quantitatively agrees with the present experimental results.

The physico-chemical nature of prepared dextran sulfates

  • The prepared dextran sulfates were characterized by measuring the reduced viscosisty at five different concentrations to obtain an intrinsic viscosity in both phosphate and tris buffers, pH 7.4, ionic strength of 0.1 Dextran sulfates having 0.81, 1.06 sulfate groups per hexose unit have reduced viscosity value below 40 ml/g whereas dextran sulfates having 1.21, 1.43, 1.69 sulfate groups per hexose unit have reduced viscosity value over 40 ml/g. Dextran sulfate having 1.21 sulfate groups per hexose unit had highest value of reduced viscosity. The reduced viscosity of dextran sulfate in tris buffer was always higher than that in phosphate buffer regardless of the sulfate content of dextran sulfate. The influence of the sulfation of the dextran sulfate. The influence of the sulfation of the dextran sulfate molecule on the dextran sulfate-LDL interaction was studied with three different dextran sulfate molecules. Dextran sulfate molecules having more than one sulfate group per hexose unit. The dextran sulfate having 0.81 sulfate groups per hexose unit showed considerably different precipitation curves in phosphate and tris buffers. This peculiar behavior of dextran sulfate having 0.81 sulfate groups per hexose unit in the two buffer systems was not noticed with dextran sulfate having more than one noticed with dextran sulfate having more than one sulfate group per hexose unit.

고로슬래그 미분말을 함유한 고유동 모르터의 유동성상에 미치는 영향 요인에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Factors Affecting the High Fluid Mortar Containing Ground Granulated Blast-furnace Slag)

  • High fluid concrete unlike OPC concrete is made with various material, and the phase of fresh concrete is considerably different. In order to understand fluidity phase and mix properties of high fluid concrete, concrete is required to access as suspension structure which consists of aggregate and paste. The focus of this paper is to analyze the test results and quantify the effect of mix proportions of mortar and fineness modulus of sand on the properties of fresh mortar. The effect of water-binder ratio. sand-binder ration. contents of ggbs (by mass of total cementitious materials). and various contents of water reducing agent on the yield stress and plastic viscosity of the mix is studied. Based on the experimental results, the fellowing conclusions can be drawn: (1) The mixing time needed for high fluid mortar was approximately two times more than that of ordinary portland mortar. (2) The fluidity phase of mortar could be explained by yield stress of mix and the fluidity of mortar. (3) As the content of ggbs increased, yield stress of mortar was decreased and plastic viscosity of it was increased. (4) For the high fluid mortar, it was appeared that sand-binder ratio should be below 1.5.

마이크로파 가열방법에 따른 감자전분의 호화특성 변화 (Changes in Gelatinization Properties of Potato Starch by Microwave Heating Methods)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the gelatinization properties of potato starch heated with microwave. Two types of potato starches were prepared; In group A raw potato starch was heated with microwave and in group B potato starch was isolated from potato heated with microwave. Both groups were exposed to the microwave energy in a 560W, 2,450 MHz oven for 60, 120, 180 and 300 seconds. Gelatinization behaviour by DSC made a few differences according to the ratio of starch to water. As the microwave heating time took longer, gelatinization temperature and gelatinization $enthalpy({\bigtriangleup}H_1)$ were decreased in and melting $enthalpy({\bigtriangleup}H_2)$ was increased in group A. Whereas they were increased in group B. In both groups, maximum viscosity in gelatinization by Brabender amylogram was decreased by microwave heating. Then the peak of the maximum viscosity was shifted to higher temperature and cold viscosity was slightly increased. In group A, viscosity in gelatinization and light transmittance by NaOH was increased in initial stage and gel volume in gelatinization by KSCN was decreased. On the other hand, in group B, viscosity by alkali was slightly decreased, but light transmittance by NaOH was almost never changed. Gel volume is decreased like group A.

알긴산의 화학적 조성 및 그 물성에 관한 연구 (2) 감태 알긴산의 우론산분자 Block 배열 및 그 물성 (Uronic Acid Composition, Block Structure and Some Related Properties of Alginic Acid (2) Uronic Acid Block Structure and Some Related Properties of Alginic Acid from Ecklonia cava)

  • We have reported the seasonal and portional variation in the composition of uronic acid of alginic acid from Ecklonia cava in the previous study. In the present paper, uronic acid block structure of alginic acid from Ecklonia cave was investigated, and some related properties such as viscosity, the dependence on temperature and substitution of metallic ion were also discussed. The proportion M block was highest amnog three blocks in both of frond and stipe. The average values of M and G block ratios were $51.6|%\;and\;32.3\%$ in the frond, whereas $45.7\%\;and\;38.6\%$ in the stipe, respectively. The proportions of alternating blocks in the frond and stipe were similar, and the values were $16.1\%$ in the frond and $15.6\%$ in the stipe. The viscosity of $1\%$ sodium alginate solution was almost inversely proportional to the M/G and/or M block ratio. Viscosities were marked maximum from summer to autumn and minimum winter to spring. In the value of lower M/G and M block ratio, the viscosity seemed to have a considerable dependence on temperature. The temperature dependence was more appearant in the alginic acid from the frond (M/G ratio, 0.95; M block, $54.2\%$) collected in July and the stipe (M/G ratio, 1.61; M block $47.6\%$) in April. The affinity with metallic ion appeared higher in order of $Pb^{2+}>Cu^{2+}>Co^{2+}>Zn^{2+}$. The amounts of metallic ion exchange of the $Pb^{2+},\;Cu^{2+},\;Co^{2+}\;and\;Zn^{2+}$ were ranged from 3.4. to 4.7, 2.5 to 3.2, 1.8 to 2.2 and 1.6 to 1.7 meq/(g. sodium alginate), respectively.
