  • The friction factors according to the flow regimes in helical coil tubes depend on the coil diameter, the tube diameter, and the coil pitch. In previous studies, correlations for the laminar flow regime in helical coil tubes have been proposed. However, studies on the transition flow regime and the turbulent flow regime are insufficient and further researches are necessary. In this study, characteristics of the friction factors for the laminar, transition and turbulent flow regimes in helical coil tubes were experimentally investigated. The helical coil tubes used in the experiments were made of copper. The curvature ratios of the helical coil tubes, which means the ratio of helical coil diameter to inner diameter of the helical coil tube are 24.5 and 90.9. Experiments were carried out in the range of $529{\leq}Re{\leq}39,406$ to observe the flows from the laminar to the turbulent regime. The friction factors were obtained by measuring the differential pressures according to the flow rates in the helical coil tubes while varying the curvature ratios of the helical coil tubes. Experimental data show that the friction factors for the helical coil tube with 24.5 in the curvature ratio of the helical coil tube were larger than those in the straight tube in all flow regimes. As the curvature ratio of the helical coil tube increases, the friction factor in turbulent flow regime tends to be equal to that of the straight tube. In addition, it was confirmed that the transition flow regimes in the helical coil tubes were much wider than those in the straight tube, also the critical Reynolds numbers were larger than those in the straight tube. The results obtained in this experimental study can be used as basic data for studies on the water hammer phenomenon in helical coil tubes.

  • Steel effects on creep deformation of prestressed concrete structues are investigated by a parametric study. Prestressed steel ratio, Prestressed steel distribution, initial flexural stress gradient, and modular ratio are selected as parameters. Sectional analysis for the beam section of parameter combination is performed to find curvatrue change due to creep. Based on the investigation, long-term curvature formulas from regression analysis are proposed. Application of the furmulas to simply supported prostressed concrete beam shows the effect of steel on deflection.

  • Damage detection methods using vibration modes are investigated on ring structures and. modal behavior of the slightly asymmetric rings is examined. Mode shapes changes, MSER(modal strain energy ratio) and MCR(modal curvature ratio) are applied to identify the locations of faults or damages. Parameters are calculated and compared by finite element analysis on rings with designed local damages. Damages are modeled as reduced stiffness in the analysis. The results show MSER and MCR can be proper factors to detect local damages in ring structures.

  • Given the specific mean shift outlier model, several standard approaches to obtaining test statistic for outliers are discussed. Each of these is developed in detail for the nonlinear regression model, and each leads to an equivalent distribution. The geometric interpretations of the statistics and accuracy of linear approximation are also presented.

  • The present study investigates in detail the combined effects of the Coriolis and centrifugal farce on the development of laminar flows in a square-sectioned U-bend rotating about an axis parallel to the center of bend curvature. When a viscous fluid flows through a rotating curved region, two types of secondary flow occur. One is caused by the Coriolis force due to the rotation of U-bend and the other by the centrifugal farce due to the curvature of U-bend. When the values of Rossby number and curvature ratio are large, the flow field in a rotating U-bend can be represented by two dimensionless parameters ; the Dean number K$\_$LC/=Re/√λ and a body ratio F=λ/Po. For positive rotation, where the rotation is in the same direction as that of the main flow, both the Coriolis force and the centrifugal force act radially outwards, the directions of the two secondary flows are the same. Therefore, the flow structure is qualitatively similar to that observed in a stationary curved duct with a larger f7c. On the other hand, in case of negative rotation, where two farces act in opposite direction, more complex flow fields can be observed depending on the relative magnitudes of the forces.

  • In general, cylindrically curved plates are used in ships and offshore structures such as wind towers, spa structures, fore and aft side shell plating, and bilge circle parts in merchant vessels. In a number of studies, it has been shown that curvature increases the buckling strength of a plate under compressive loading, and the ultimate load-carrying capacity is also expected to increase. In the present paper, a series of elastic and elastoplastic large deflection analyses were performed using the commercial finite element analysis program (MSC.NASTRAN/PATRAN) in order to clarify and examine the fundamental buckling and collapse behaviors of curved plates subjected to combined axial compression and lateral pressure. On the basis of the numerical results, the effects of curvature, the magnitude of the initial deflection, the slenderness ratio, and the aspect ratio on the characteristics of the buckling and collapse behavior of the curved plates are discussed. On the basis of the calculated results, the design formula was developed to predict the buckling and ultimate strengths of curved plates subjected to combined loads in an analytical manner. The buckling strength behaviors were simulated by performing elastic large deflection analyses. The newly developed formulations were applied in order to perform verification analyses for the curved plates by comparing the numerical results, and then, the usefulness of the proposed method was demonstrated.

For positive rotation, where the rotation is in the same direction as that of the main flow, both the Coriolis force and the centrifugal force act radially outwards. Therefore, the flow structure is qualitatively similar to that observed in a stationary curved duct. On the other hand, under negative rotation, where these two forces act in opposite direction, more complex flow fields can be observed depending on the relative magnitudes of the forces. Under the condition that the value of Rossby number and curvature ratio is large, the flow field in a rotating U-bend can be represented by two dimensionless parameters : $K_{TC}$ =Re $\sfrac{1}{4}$√λand a body force ratio F=λ/Ro. Here, $K_{TC}$ has the same dynamical meaning as $K_{TC}$ =Re√λ for laminar flow.

  • High-strength concrete (HSC) is becoming more popular in the construction of beams and columns of tall buildings because of its higher stiffness and strength-to-weight ratio. However, as HSC is more brittle than normal-strength concrete (NSC), it may adversely affect the flexural ductility and deformability of concrete members. Extended from a series of theoretical study conducted on flexural ductility of concrete beams, the authors would in this paper investigate the effects of some critical factors including the degree of reinforcement, confining pressure, concrete and steel yield strength on the flexural deformability of NSC and HSC beams. The deformability, expressed herein in terms of normalised rotation capacity defined as the product of ultimate curvature and effective depth, is investigated by a parametric study using nonlinear moment-curvature analysis. From the results, it is evident that the deformability of concrete beams increases as the degree of reinforcement decreases and/or confining pressure increases. However, the effects of concrete and steel yield strength are more complicated and dependent on other factors. Quantitative analysis of all these effects on deformability of beams has been carried out and formulas for direct deformability evaluation are developed. Lastly, the proposed formulas are compared with available test results to verify its applicability.
