  • We are developing a web-based movie recommender system that catches and reasons with user profiles and ratings to recommend movies. In the paper, we outline the current status of our implementation with particular emphasis on the mechanisms used to provide effective recommendations. Social recommender systems collect ratings of items from many individuals and use nearest-neighbor techniques to make recommendations to a user. However, these methods only depend on the ratings and ignore other useful information. Our primary concern is to provide an approach that can recommend the movies based on not only the user ratings but also the significant amount of other information that is available about the nature of each items - such as cast list or movie genre. We experimentally evaluate our approach and compare them to conventional social filtering, which suggests merits to our approach.

  • This study aims to investigate the effect of handle angles of pliers on performances of task completion time and the number of errors, and subjective ratings of preference. For doing this, an experiment was conducted, where 14 subjects of 11 college-age male and three female students participated. In the experiment, plier handles angled at $0^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, and $40^{\circ}$ were used as independent variable, and the task completion time and the number of errors, and subjective ratings of preference as dependent variables. The subjects were instructed to do two tasks of bending an iron plate by $90^{\circ}$ and cutting wires. The results revealed that while the performances of task completion time and the number of errors were not statistically different depending upon the handle angles of pliers, the subjective ratings of preference were significantly different. Based on the results, it is recommended that the pliers with handles bent by $20^{\circ}$ be used in real situations.

  • In this study, the computational heat transfer of the high-voltage vacuum circuit breaker was investigated. Higher normal current-ratings and stabilized thermal characteristics become more important in existing circuit breakers in order to satisfy market needs. Increases in current-ratings have an even greater effect on the Joule heating in the main circuit of the breakers. The thermal design must account for this increase in heat produced for the breaker to meet various temperature-rise limits set by industry standards. We are studying to enhance the normal current-ratings without major frame change of our present production models. As the method used in this research, we performed the computational analysis using the commercial Package, ICEPAK. We could get optimized thermal design suitable for 25% upgraded normal current-ratings through parametric study.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the correlation of single-number ratings for sound insulation by floor impact. As a assessment method of impact sound insulation. we selected the IIC contour of ISO, A weighted sound level. Inverse A-weighting curve and L-Index of japanese industrial standard. And we estimated the single-number ratings by application the measured data of impact sound level to each method. The results showed that the coefficients of determination between each two single-number ratings were very high (more than 0.9169). And In the condition of same assessment method, the coefficient of determination for light-weight impact sound was higher than that for heavy-weight impact sound.

  • This paper describes the method for designing loudness ratings as transmission quality for ISDN telephone connected to fully digital network. To design the desirable loudness ratings for ISDN telephone, the model system of digital speech communication for subjective test is developed and opinion tests for establishing the optimal CODEC input level, the range of overall loudness rating, and sidetone masking rating are performed. As the results, the desirable ranges of loudness ratings are proposed as 6 to 8dB for sending, 0 to 2dB for receiving, and 10 to 14dB for sidetone masking rating.

  • A basis for the direct use of data from nondestructive evaluation methods in bridge management systems is presented. Bridge management systems use integer-valued condition ratings to recognize conditions of bridge elements, to model progression of deterioration, and to determine repair needs. Data from nondestructive evaluation methods can inform management systems on the extent of damage, on the initiation of deterioration processes, and on the exposure of bridge elements to aggressive agents. In addition, data obtained through nondestructive evaluation methods allow the formation of models of specific deterioration process. The use of these data in bridge management systems requires redefinition of condition ratings together with the creation of procedures for automated interpretation of data. By these action, nondestructive evaluation methods are directly used to assign condition ratings, and condition ratings are made into terse form of NDE data that are compatible with present day bridge management systems. This paper reports work in progress to strategic use of nondestructive evaluation methods in bridge management system.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a scale for evaluation of preschool children's peer competence and to examine its validity and reliability. The 15 items of the preliminary scale were completed by teachers, and peer rating scale for assessment of peer acceptance was administered to 365 children 5 to 6 years of age. The methods for data analysis included item analysis, factor analysis for construct validity, Pearson correlations between teacher's ratings of peer competence and children's ratings of peer acceptance for concurrent validity, and Cronbach's u for reliability. The 15 items of the scathe were found be satisfactory in terms of item response distribution and item discrimination. Factor analysis revealed that a 3-factor solution was the best fit: sociability, prosocial behavior, leadership in peer relations. Correlations between teacher's ratings and children's ratings were as significant. Cronbach'so ranged from .88 to .93 for three subscales and .93 for the total scale. It was concluded that the psychometric properties of the peer competence scale in general were acceptable for use.

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to empirically investigate the degree of performance inconsistency among the Environmental, Social and Governance ratings. Design/methodology/approach - This study performs regression analysis using the widely used ESG ratings published by the Korea Institute of Corporate Governance and Sustainability. Findings - The results show that firms often do not show consistent performance across the Environmental, Social and Governance aspects, with excellent performance on one aspect but mediocre or poor performance on another. The paper also finds some degree of firm-level persistence in such performance inconsistency, suggesting that the traits of the firm and the industry the firm belongs to might influence whether a firm shows inconsistent performance across the three aspects. Research implications or Originality - This paper highlights the need for researchers and practitioners to understand the underlying behavior of the individual E, S and G ratings, instead of taking them as given, in order to properly design their analyses.

  • This paper examines the effects of dominating large shareholders and foreign blockholders on credit ratings. An effective governance mechanism is expected to lead to higher credit ratings through its impact on default risk of the firm. Our results show that dominating large shareholders have an adverse impact on credit ratings of domestic firms on the level of its statistical significance. Foreign shareholders are positively associated with credit ratings, contributing to the higher credit worthness of domestic firms.

  • The new deregulated economic environment in the power utility market is forcing fundamental changes in the investment and operational decisions regarding transmission lines. Hence, it has come to be an important issue to evaluate their current utility in order to increase conductor ampacity based on conservative assumptions of worst case weather conditions. Static thermal rating has born still applied in most power companies worldwide, however some of them have been done various trials such as monitoring dynamic line ratings to increase line ratings in real time. This study is an attempt to access the static line ratings in Korea Electric Power Corporation(KEPCO) transmission lines, which were specified by weather model. Several environmental performances for determining static line ratings are examined by using the past weather data of Korean Meteorological Administration. As a result, it is shown that seasonal or regional line ratings could be adopt to the KEPCO's transmission lines, and their line ratings could be more increased without refurbishing current conductors in service to new high-temperature ones.
