  • Active hybrid solid state transformer(AHSST) is newly emerging as a device to maintan the power quality of power distribution. AHSST has a simple structure in which a power electronics device is connected in series to a conventional distribution transformer. The connected power electronics device maintains the constant voltage regardless of the primary grid voltage fluctuation through the secondary voltage control to improve the power quality. It also has a simple structure compare to conventional solid state transformer system and can achieve the same performance with fractionally-rated converter. This paper proposes an multi-level converter based on AHSST system that has a simpler control method and wider voltage control range than the conventional AHSST. The proposed system is verified by simulations.

  • This paper proposed DC-DC converter for fuel cell that have high voltage and high current output characteristics. It is required step-up converter to use by general power supply, because the general rated voltage of fuel cell is low about 20$\sim$50V. The miniaturization of converter and DC link voltage can be controlled and high quality of output voltage uses mainly DC-DC converter. The boost converter and buck-boost converter do not get high boosting ratio. It is that proposed boost-flyback converter. Through simulation and an experiment, it could get high boosting ratio and efficiency more than 90%.

  • With the increasing demands for clean environment, development of air cleaning systems has been received increasing attention. One of the key technologies in the electrostatic precipitator(EP) is high voltage pulsed power supply, which affects the performance of the overall system. In this study, a high voltage microsecond pulse power supply for the pilot EP is developed. The power supply has a dc source and a pulsed one. The ratings of the dc and the pulse source are 60kV and 70kV respectively. The width of pulse voltage is 140us and the maximum pulse repetition frequency is 200Hz.

  • During normal machine operation, partial discharge(PD) measurements were peformed with turbine generator analyzer(TGA) in two high voltage motors(rated 6.6 kV). These high voltage motors were installed with 80 pF capacitive couplers at the terminal box. TGA summarizes each plot with two quantities such as the normalized quantity number(NQN) and the peak PD magnitude (Qm). The trend analyses of NQN and $Q_m$ value are available for monitoring of the insulation condition in stator windings of high voltage motors.

  • For the application of superconducting wires to fault current limiting devices, it is required that they have a high rated voltage when a fault occurs. Stabilizer-free coated conductors, particularly, shows a good performance for the high rated voltage, which is beyond 0.6 V/cm. In this study, using the stabilizer-free coated conductors, we made fault current limiting devices and examined their characteristics. Fault current limiting devices were fabricated with a shape of the cylinder of a mono-filar coil winding. Stabilizer-free coated conductors were wound along the mono-filar coil line and the terminal parts between the wire and metal were soldered using In solder. Two kinds of devices were fabricated by a different method in the terminal joint, one was made by a soldering and the other was made by a soldering-free joint. Critical currents and resistance at the joint parts were measured. In addition, long-time current flowing tests were also carried out for the characterization of the fault current limiting devices.

  • POSTECH Graduate School of Wind Energy is trying to upgrade the PMSG used for Unison U50 to 900 kW class. Intensive optimization efforts are carried out the reduce the axial size and total weight of the generator while increasing the rated output to 900 kW. The generator features 3.32m stator inner radius, 671mm stator length, 84 pole, 25 rated rpm and 31.6kN/$m^2$ shear force density. To reduce the gross weight, the stronger magnetic material is applied with optimal magnet size resulting lowest cogging torque. Also, instead of stator skewing the stator, the magnet position along the circumference is optimized to further reduce the cogging torque. This scheme eliminates the stator skewing procedure and may enhance the productivity. This method also reduces the total harmonic distortion. In this report, upgrade method, no-load line to line voltage and phase voltage, cogging torque, loss calculations and thermal analysis are presented.

  • This paper presents a single phase high power factor PWM boost rectifier featuring soft commutat -ion of the active switches at zero current. It incorporates the most desirable properties of conventional PWM and soft switching resonant techniques. The input current shaping is achieved with average current mode control and continuous inductor current mode. This new PWM converter provides zero current turn on and turn off of the active switches, and it is suitable for high power applications employing IGBT's. The principle of operation, the theoretical analysis, a design example, and experi -mental results from a laboratory prototype rated at 1.6[kW] with 400[Vdc] output voltage are presented. The measured efficiency and the power factor were 96.2[%] and 0.99[%], respectively, with an input current THD equal to 3.94[%], for an input voltage with THD equal to 3.8[%], at rated load.

  • The severe conditions such as rated voltage of 800kV, gas pressure of $5kg/cm^2$ and rated lighting impulse withstand voltage of 2400kV were adopted for the design of spacers in the 800kV GIS to give a sufficient design margin. The design criteria on the maximum electric field strength of the center conductor and the insulator surface were established by considering the insulator surface characteristics, electrode area and surface effects in the unequal electric field strength of the given gap. The design parameters such as inter/outer envelope degree, thickness, inter/outer inserts, triple junction gap were determined by calculating the electric field using FLUX-2D program package and by referring to the published papers. The mechanical stress analysis was conducted on the feasible model spacers that showed good electric field distributions to confirm the sufficient mechanical design margin. The 800kV spacer designed as described above is now in the process of manufacturing.

  • Wide operating range and speed control is needed for wind power generating and a Doubly Fed Induction Generator(DFIG) has good adaptivity for that purpose. This paper deals with power and power factor control using the Grid connected DFIG in the wide speed regions, by controlling frequency and voltage fed to the rotor. Power flow of the DFIG and steady-state algebraic equations of the equivalent circuit are analyzed. For a normal operating region, in which the generator ratings were not exceeded, the rotor current was either less than or equal to the rated value. Accordingly, the optimal power factor can be selected relative to the permissible rated current at the rotor coil which controls the magnitude of the injected rotor voltage to the rotor according to a given rotor frequency.
