  • This paper proposes transformerless power conversion system consisting of a single-phase diode rectifier and a shunt hybrid filter for the electric-railway system. The hybrid filter consists of a single tuned LC filter per a phase and a low-rated NPC type multi-level inverter. Compared with conventional active filters. Transformers are not used. Also, LC filter works as not only a harmonic filter tuned at the 5th harmonic frequency but also a switching-ripple filter. The rating of the active filter can be decreased by using a NPC type multi-level inverter. The simulation results confirm the validity of the system

  • This paper presents an effective control scheme incorporated in the voltage-fed half-bridge series resonant inverter for induction heating applications, which is based upon a load-adaptive tuned frequency tracking control strategy using PLL(Phase Locked Loop) and its peripheral control circuit. The proposed control strategy ensures a stable operation characteristics of overall inverter system and ZVS(Zero Voltage Switching0 operation in spite of sensitive load parameters variation as well as power regulation, specially in the non-magnetic heating loads. The simulation results and the performance characteristics in the steady-state are shown as compared with the experimental results for a prototype induction cooking system rated at 1.2kW.

  • Recently, a fuel cell with low voltage and high current of electronic output characteristics is remarkable for new generation system. It needs both a dc-dc boost converter and do-ac inverter to be used in domestic power. Therefore, this paper presents do-dc boost converter with ZVS for fuel cell generation system This topology has several advantages, which are ZVS characteristics of all of main and auxiliary switches, reduction of reactor component size because of high frequency switching, and low rated voltage stress of the switches. In this paper, theoretical analysis, operation principle, and design procedures are presented. And simulation results from Pspice are presented to validate the theoretical analysis.

  • The effects of BPC (blade pitch control) on FOWT (floating offshore wind turbine) motions and generated power are investigated by using a fully-coupled turbine-floater-mooring simulation program. In this regard, two example FOWTs, OC4-5MW semi-submersible FOWT and KRISO four-3MW-units FOWT, are selected since the numerical simulations of those two FOWTs have been verified against experiments in authors' previous studies. Various simulations are performed changing BPC natural frequency (BPCNF), BPC damping ratio (BPCDR), and wind speeds. Through the numerical simulations, it was demonstrated that negative damping can happen for platform pitch motions and its influences are affected by BPCNF, BPCDR, and wind speeds. If BPCNF is significantly larger than platform-pitch natural frequency, the pitch resonance can be very serious due to the BPC-induced negative-damping effects, which should be avoided in the FOWT design. If wind speed is significantly higher than the rated wind velocity, the negative damping effects start to become reduced. Other important findings are also given through systematic sensitivity investigations.

  • SFC system has come to be used as drive large synchronous machine in many industry applications. Many papers have been presented on the control algorithm of SFC system, not the acceleration and start-up but the rated speed operation with line connection and the braking operation with regeneration which is used in the industry. This paper presents the whole section control algorithm for a large synchronous machine using SFC system. The results of experiment show that the proposed algorithm is proper and effective.

  • We investigated the malfunction and destruction characteristics of microcontroller devices under high power electromagnetic(HPEM) wave by magnetron. HPEM was rated at a microwave output of 0 to 1,000 W, at a frequency of 2,450${\pm}$50 MHz and was radiated from the open-ended standard rectangular waveguide(WR-340) to free space. The influence of different reset-, clock-, data-, and power supply-line lengths has been tested. The variation of the line length was done with flat cables. The susceptibility of the tested microcontroller devices was in general much influenced by clock-, reset-, and power supply-line length, little influenced by data-line length. Further the line length was increased, the malfunction threshold was decreased as expected, because more energy couples to the devices. The surfaces of the destroyed microcontroller devices were removed and the chip conditions were investigated with microscope. The microscopic analysis of the damaged devices showed component and bondwire destructions such as breakthroughs and melting due to thermal effects. The obtained results are expected to provide fundamental data for interpreting the combined mechanism of microcontroller devices in an intentional microwave environment.

  • This paper describes the development of a new islanding detection method for inverter-based distributed generation systems, which uses a signal cross-correlation scheme between the injected reactive current and the power frequency deviation. The proposed method injects 1% of the reactive current to the rated current which brings about a negligible degradation of the power quality. It discriminates the islanding state, when the calculated cross-correlation index is larger than 0.5. The operational feasibility was verified through computer simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC software and experimental research with a hardware prototype. The proposed method can detect the islanding state without degrading the power quality at the point of common connection. Further study is required to overcome the cancellation of the injected reactive current from multiple distributed generation units interconnected with the utility grid.

  • An adaptive maximum power point tracking (MPPT) scheme employing a variable scaling factor is presented. A MPPT control loop was constructed analytically and the magnitude variation in the MPPT loop gain according to the operating point of the PV array was identified due to the nonlinear characteristics of the PV array output. To make the crossover frequency of the MPPT loop gain consistent, the variable scaling factor was determined using an approximate curve-fitted polynomial equation about linear expression of the error. Therefore, a desirable dynamic response and the stability of the MPPT scheme were maintained across the entire MPPT voltage range. The simulation and experimental results obtained from a 3 KW rated prototype demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed MPPT scheme.

  • The electrification trend of mobility increases every year due to the development of power semiconductor and battery technology. Accordingly, the development and distribution of fast chargers for electric vehicles (EVs) are in demand. In this study, we propose a design and implementation method of an LLC converter for fast chargers. Two 15 kW LLC converters are configured in parallel to have 30 kW rated output power, and the control algorithm and driving sequence are designed accordingly and verified. In addition, the improved power conversion efficiency is confirmed through zero-voltage switching (ZVS) of the LLC converter and reduction of turn-off loss through snubber capacitors. The implemented 30 kW LLC converters show a wide output voltage range of 200-950 V. Experiments applying various load conditions verify the converter performance.
