  • The power system configuration is changed to solve increasing power demand. This changes in power system configuration with mesh-, network grid generate the problem of fault current increase. Superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been expected the one of the solutions to solve this problem. And there has already been reported much to the application and research of SFCL in the power distribution system. However, the application and research of SFCL are insufficient in a transmission power system. Also, the fault current limiting effect by the SFCL varies with installation location of SFCL. Therefore, this paper constructed the power transmission system through experiment and analyzed installation location method of SFCL using the current rate of each circuit breaker (CB) according to fault location.

  • The pole interaction of the line-commutated converter high-voltage direct current (HVDC) is analyzed, and a practical solution that uses a surge arrester is proposed. Jeju HVDC No. 2 is a double-monopole HVDC link that has a rated power capacity of 2 × 200 MW and was commissioned in 2012. During normal operation, Jeju HVDC No. 2 is operated in the bipolar mode to minimize the loss caused by the dedicated metallic return. However, when one pole of the inverter valve is bypassed, a commutation failure can occur in the other pole. This phenomenon is called pole interaction in this work. This pole interaction interrupts the HVDC power transfer for almost 2 s and may affect the stability of the power system. This research proposes the installation of a surge arrester at the inverter neutral, which can be an effective and practical solution for pole interaction. The HVDC system is analyzed, and the residual voltage of the surge arrester is determined. Detailed simulation using PSCAD/EMTDC demonstrates that the proposed method eliminates the pole interaction of the bipolar-operated HVDC.

  • Nuclear power plants in South Korea are operated to cover the baseload demand. Hence they are operated at 100% rated power and do not deploy power tracking control except for startup, shutdown, or during transients. However, as the contribution of renewable energy in the energy mix increases, load follow operation may be needed to cover the imbalance between consumption and production due to the intermittent nature of electricity produced from the conversion of wind or solar energy. Load follow operation may be quite challenging since the operators need to control the axial power distribution and core reactivity while simultaneously conducting the power maneuvering. In this paper, a systems engineering approach for multi-physics load follow simulation of APR1400 is performed. RELAP5/SCDAPSIM/MOD3.4/3DKIN multi-physics package is selected to simulate the Korean Advanced Power Reactor, APR1400, under load follow operation to reflect the impact of feedback signals on the system safety parameters. Furthermore, the systems engineering approach is adopted to identify the requirements, functions, and physical architecture to provide a set of verification and validation activities that guide this project development by linking each requirement to a validation or verification test with predefined success criteria.

  • In this paper, an electronic ballast was developed to control a 250W metal halide lamp. To avoid acoustic resonance phenomenon, we calculated the acoustic resonance band and determined the driving frequency from 70kHz to 100kHz. Due to the switching loss of MOSFET, many problems are caused in the inverter circuit during lamp lighting, so we reduced the loss by connecting the capacitor that minimizes the magnitude of the impulsive voltage. In this paper, the main point of research is to find the methods to operate the lamp on the rated output power. After detecting the current and the voltage of the lamp, we changed the driving frequency by adjusting the DC voltage level of the VCO input.

  • An analog type turbine control system in a nuclear power plant in Korea was replaced by a digital type control system successfully. The turbine simulator was used to verify and validate the perfection of newly developed digital control system prior to its actual installation. In this paper, the newly developed turbine speed control system, ie. governor will be introduced together with how to simulate entire control loop. After that, we will compare the comparison of simulation result in laboratory with pre startup simulation result. Eventually the performance of actual operation result was testified.

  • This paper describes high voltage and high energy density capacitor developed for pulsed power applications. The rated voltage of the developed capacitor is DC 22 [kV], the capacitance is 206 [$\mu$F] and the energy density is about 0.7 [kJ/kg]. Polypropylene film and kraft paper were used as the dielectrics. The ratio of the thickness of each dielectric material which consists of the composite dielectric structure, stacking factor and the termination method were determined by the charging and discharging tests on model capacitors. In terms of energy density, the developed capacitor has higher energy density compared with the products of foreign leading companies. In addition, it has been proved that the life expectancy can be more over 2000 shots through the charging and discharging test. The voltage reversal factor was 20%. This capacitor can be used as numerous discharge applications such as military, medical, industrial fields.

  • A Single phase induction motor is the predominant fractional horsepower power rated, extensively used in domestic and industrial application. For example, these motors provide the motive power to washing machines, fans, refrigerators, etc. In this paper, single phase induction motor input current was detected by a small current transformer and determined TRIAC gate signal by using op-amp analog circuit. The soft-start strategy is based on limited auxiliary current angle during starting period in the closed-loop control. The Simulation and experimental result show the motor's starting characteristics of the proposal starting system and are compared with centrifugal switch starting motor.

  • Testing was conducted to determine the performance of a residential fuel cell system when subjected to DSS and WSS operation, especially for start-up and shut-down characteristics. In terms of start-up time, it took about 70min to start output power generation and stably to reach 1kW at cold start. Measurement of the characteristics of heat and power generation were carried out at start-up and shut-down time. Fuel gas is used for heating both reformer and stack from start-up to the beginning of power generation. In terms of start-up and shut-down characteristics, it was important to control the reformer temperature precisely. The average output water temperature during the rated output operation(960W) was $63.2^{\circ}C$ constantly. The results of the investigation are being used to develop a new test protocols for residential fuel cell system.
