Growth performance, non-specific immune activity, and resistance against Vibrio parahaemolyticus of whiteleg shrimp fed dietary Chromolaena odorata leaf flour components

  • The efficacy of Chromolaena odorata leaf flour components (CO) to increase the growth performance, non-specific immune activity, and resistance against Vibrio parahaemolyticus of whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) culture was evaluated. To this purpose, whiteleg shrimp post larvae were fed on diets supplemented with 0 and a 1.5 g CO/kg diet for 45 days in a pond. After feeding trials, the shrimps were identified for their growth parameters, collected, and injected with V. parahaemolyticus, then their non-specific immune activity and resistance to V. parahaemolyticus was observed for 14 days. Findings showed that CO increased the average body weight (7.71 g, 37%), weight gain (7.69 g, 40%), and specific growth rate (13.23%/day, 5.7%) as compared to the control. In addition, CO supplementation also increases shrimp's hematologic and immune activity (total hemocyte counts [6.8 × 107 CFU/mL, 242.9%], differential hemocyte counts [27%, 142.1%], and prophenoloxidase activity [0.085%, 566.7%]). Finally, shrimp resistance to V. parahaemolyticus infection also increased after CO supplementation, with survival rates of 73.33% as compared to 23.33% for the control. It suggests that C. odorata leaf flour component supplementation at an optimal dose in the diet may be an effective strategy to increase growth and resistance to bacterial disease with reduced mortality in shrimp farms.

Uncovering Candidate Pathogenicity Genes in Erwinia pyrifoliae YKB12327 via Tn5-insertion Mutagenesis

  • Erwinia pyrifoliae is a gram-negative bacterial pathogen that commonly causes black shoot blight in pear and apple tree. Although the pathogenicity of this bacterial species is very similar to E. amylovora, there is no specific explanation of its pathogenic genes and mechanisms. In this study, our investigation into E. pyrifoliae pathogenicity involved generating seven YKB12327 mutant strains using Tn5 transposon mutagenesis. Observations revealed weakened growth rate and loss of pathogenicity in these mutants. Whole-genome sequencing and alignment analysis identified transposon insertions within the coding sequences of five strains and in the intergenic region of two strains. Annotation analysis elucidated genes directly or indirectly associated with pathogenicity. Notably, mutant strain MT16 displayed a transposon insertion mutation in the cyclic-di-GMP phosphodiesterase (pdeF) gene, a key player in bacterial signaling, governing microbial behavior and adaptation to environmental changes. Our findings provide insights into the genetic regulation of E. pyrifoliae pathogenicity, suggesting potential avenues for further research aimed at understanding and controlling this bacterial pathogen by targeting pdeF to mitigate apple black shoot blight disease.

  • The great sudden change of circle of dental laboratory technology brought many discord between the new growing environmental group and the old group. In order to know the satisfactory degree of Dental Laboratory Heads about all and woman dental technicians who graduated from junior college, this study was conducted for 41 dental laboratory heads in Pusan area during Aug. to Sep. 1986 by means of a questionaire. The results are obtained as follows : 1. By born place, the dental laboratory heads’ satisfactory degree mean of items about all dental technician who graduated from junior college were Pusan group 3.55, Kyungnam group 2.94. The difference among the groups was significant enough(P<0.05). The satisfactory degree about woman dental technician graduated from junior college were Pusan group 3.45, Kyungnam group 2.72. 2. By age, The degree of satisfaction of items about all graduate dental technician were 30$\sim$34 age group 3.13, 40$\sim$44 age group 2.71. The degree of satisfaction about woman graduate dental technician were 30$\sim$34 age group 3.13, 40$\sim$44 age group 2.71. The degree of satisfaction about woman graduate dental technician were as follow : 35$\sim$39 age group 3.50, 45$\sim$49 age group 3.16, 30$\sim$34 age group 2.86, 40$\sim$44 age group 2.43. 3. By job career, the highest degree item out of satisfaction about all graduate dental technician was 6$\sim$10 years group 3.58, the other items were 1$\sim$15 years group 2.90, 16$\sim$20 years group 2.71. The satisfactory degree item about woman graduate dental technician was 6$\sim$10 years group 3.43, 16$\sim$20 years group 3.15, 11$\sim$15 years group 2.82 respectively. 4. By managing term of respondents’ dental laboratory, the satisfactory degree of items about all graduate dental technician were below 2 years group 3.25, 3$\sim$6 years group 3.14, 7$\sim$10 years group 2.93 in order. The satisfactory degree items about woman graduate dental technician were 11$\sim$14 years group 3.25, 3$\sim$6 years group 3.14 7$\sim$10 years group 2.80 in order. 5. By acquired qualification of licence test, the satisfactory degree of dental laboratory heads about all graduate dental technician were job career group 3.07, graduated from Dept. of Dental Technology group 3.00. The satisfactory degree about woman graduate dental technician were job career group 3.03 and graduated from Dept. of Dental Technology group 2.57. 6. By dental technician numbers of respondents’ dental laboratory. the satisfactory degree of items was as follow: 10$\sim$13 persons group is 2.86, 6$\sim$9 persons group 3.25, below 5 persons group 3.11. There was significant enough.(P<0.01). The satisfactory degree items about woman graduate dental technician were below 5 persons group is 3.00, 10$\sim$13 persons group 2.79, 6$\sim$9 persons group 2.67. 7. by the outlook of occupation, the satisfactory degree of dental laboratory heads about all dental technicians who graduated from junior college were neither good norbad group 3.20 bad group 2.59, good group 3.13. The difference among the groups was significant enough(P<0.01). The satisfactory degree about woman dental technicains graduated from junior college were good group 3.25, neither good nor bad group 2.80, bad group 2.75. The difference among the groups was significant enough.(P<0.01) 8. By occupational satisfaction, The satisfactory degree of items about all graduate dental technician were neither satisfied nor dissatisfied group 3.08, satisfied group 3.17, dissatisfied group 2.89. By cognition of the number of graduate dental technician, the satisfactory degree of dental laboratory heads about all graduate dantal technician were too many group 2.86, many group 3.32. There was significant enough.(P<0.05) About woman graduate dental techician were too many group 2.60, many group 3.20 The difference among the groups was significant enough.(P<0.01) 11. As compared with the items ut of satisfaction and improvement about all dental technician who graduated from junior college, the rate of satisfaction item was for as follow : dental technological theory is 5.21%, ability of adaptation and sincerity each 17.1%. The rate of improvement items was as follow : sincerity is 39%, ability of work and ability of basical work each 24.4%. 12. As compared with the items out of satisfaction and improvement about woman dental laboratory technician who graduated from junior college, the rate of satisfaction item was as follow : atmosphere of the office is 56.1%, sincerity 22%. The rate of improvement items was as follow : ability of adaptation is 36.6%, ability of work 31.7%.

Effects of Dietary Supplementation of Magnesium Hydrogen Phosphate (MgHPO4) as an Alternative Phosphorus Source on Growth and Feed Utilization of Juvenile Far Eastern Catfish (Silurus asotus)

  • The present study was conducted to investigate a supplemental effect of magnesium hydrogen phosphate (MHP, $MgHPO_4$) as an alternative phosphorus (P) source on growth and feed utilization of juvenile far eastern catfish (Silurus asotus) in comparison with three conventional P additives (monocalcium phosphate (MCP), dicalcium phosphate (DCP) and tricalcium phosphate [TCP]) as positive controls. A basal diet as a negative control was prepared without P supplementation and four supplemental P sources were added at the level of 2%. Five groups of 450 fish having mean body weight of 11.3 g following 24 h fasting after three week adaptation period were randomly distributed into each of 15 tanks (30 fish/tank). Fish were hand-fed to apparent satiety twice a day for 8 weeks. Fish fed MHP had weight gain (WG), protein efficiency ratio and specific growth rate comparable to those fed MCP. Fish fed MHP and MCP had feed efficiency (FE) significantly higher (p<0.05) than those fed DCP. Fish groups fed control and TCP showed the lower FE than the other groups which was significantly different (p<0.05) from those of fish fed the other diets. Survival rate was not significantly different (p>0.05) among treatments. Fish fed control had the lowest hematocrit, which was significantly different (p<0.05) from that of fish fed MHP. Fish fed MCP and MHP had plasma P higher (p<0.05) than fish fed the other diets. Relative efficiencies of MCP, DCP and TCP to MHP were found to be 100.5 and 101.3%, 92.0 and 91.6%, and 79.1 and 80.9% for WG and FE, respectively. P availability was determined to be 88.1%, 75.2%, 8.7%, and 90.9% for MCP, DCP, TCP, and MHP, respectively. Consequently, MHP recovered from wastewater stream showed that as an alternative P source its performance was comparative with MCP on growth and feed utilization of juvenile far eastern catfish.

  • This study aims to diagnose the present condition of the Digital comics industry, including the "webtoon", which is receiving attention as the new Korean wave (Hallyu) cultural content, and explore ways to vitalize these contents. Considering the fact that the distribution rate of smart devices in Korea is the highest in the world as of June 2013, and that comics as contents have been known to show the easiest and fastest adaptation to changes in the media, the Digital comics industry is certainly an area with high expected growth, but its actual size of the industry shows a very low growth rate compared to other digital contents. This study analyzes the present condition of the Digital comics industry through theoretical and precedent study, and deducts 7 major factors that inhibit the growth of Digital comics industry by summing up the industry structure through making surveys of major businesses in the industry. Further, problems and possible solutions of the digital comics industry are discussed through in-depth interviews with total 10 digital comics industry experts. Building a ecosystem based charged service, realizing a total management system, government support and improvements on restrictions are discussed as solutions to a sustained growth of the Digital comics industry.

Effect of Environment Factors on Growth and Mortality of Cupped Oyster, Crassostrea gigas (양식장 환경이 갯벌양식 굴 (Crassostrea gigas)의 성장과 폐사에 미치는 영향)

  • In order to evaluate how the effects of aquacultural environment, such as temperature, salinity, DO, SS, Chlorophyll-a, COD and nutritive salts on Cupped oysters, an investigational study was conducted between September to December of 2011. During the study, different intermediate cage farms on the surface of the sea were used to culture and compare the growth and survival rate of the Cupped oysters in different fishing environments. The different intermediate cage farms used were Wonsando-ri, Chang-ri, and Pado-ri. In January of 2012, these oysters were transplanted to a horizontal net farm in a mudflat until July of that year. The adaptation rates of the Cupped oysters were tested at differential exposure times at varying intertidal periods. Wonsando-ri showed the highest water temperature and Chlorophyll-a levels, while the salinity was found to be within range of stable conditions among all three intermediate cage farms. Once the Cupped oysters were at the horizontal net farm, the growth was measured at distinct tidal exposure time of 1, 3, and 5 hours, whereby the growth rate was highest at 3, 1, and 5 hours, respectively. In addition, the oysters cultivated in intermediate cage farms had longer shell lengths compared to shell heights, while oysters cultured in the horizontal net farm had larger shell heights than shell lengths.

The Influence of Feed Energy Density and a Formulated Additive on Rumen and Rectal Temperature in Hanwoo Steers

  • The present study investigated the optimum blending condition of protected fat, choline and yeast culture for lowering of rumen temperature. The Box Benken experimental design, a fractional factorial arrangement, and response surface methodology were employed. The optimum blending condition was determined using the rumen simulated in vitro fermentation. An additive formulated on the optimum condition contained 50% of protected fat, 25% of yeast culture, 5% of choline, 7% of organic zinc, 6.5% of cinnamon, and 6.5% of stevioside. The feed additive was supplemented at a rate of 0.1% of diet (orchard grass:concentrate, 3:7) and compared with a control which had no additive. The treatment resulted in lower volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration and biogas than the control. To investigate the effect of the optimized additive and feed energy levels on rumen and rectal temperatures, four rumen cannulated Hanwoo (Korean native beef breed) steers were in a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design. Energy levels were varied to low and high by altering the ratio of forage to concentrate in diet: low energy (6:4) and high energy (4:6). The additive was added at a rate of 0.1% of the diet. The following parameters were measured; feed intake, rumen and rectal temperatures, ruminal pH and VFA concentration. This study was conducted in an environmentally controlled house with temperature set at $30^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity levels of 70%. Steers were housed individually in raised crates to facilitate collection of urine and feces. The adaptation period was for 14 days, 2 days for sampling and 7 days for resting the animals. The additive significantly reduced both rumen (p<0.01) and rectal temperatures (p<0.001) without depressed feed intake. There were interactions (p<0.01) between energy level and additive on ruminal temperature. Neither additive nor energy level had an effect on total VFA concentration. The additive however, significantly increased (p<0.01) propionate and subsequently had lower acetate:propionate (A/P) ratios than non-additive supplementation. High concentrate diets had significantly lower pH. Interactions between energy and additive were observed (p<0.01) in ammonia nitrogen production. Supplementation of diets with the additive resulted in lower rumen and rectal temperatures, hence the additive showed promise in alleviating undesirable effects of heat stress in cattle.

Effects of Arbuscular Mycorrhiza Inoculation and Phosphorus Application on Early Growth of Hot Pepper(Capsicum annum L.) (Arbuscular mycorrhiza의 접종방법 및 인산시용량이 고추(Capsicum annum L.)의 초기생장에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of Arbuscular Mycorrhizae inoculation and phosphorus application on early growth of hot pepper. Gigaspora margarita and Acaulospora spinosa were chosen for this investigation and inoculated into soils of different P levels by varying inoculation time and density. After treatment, some relevant growth responses of hot pepper were measured. Regardless of soil P levels, hot peppers treated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi had 5~34% more fresh weight than those untreated, but the effect of inoculation time and density was not different between two species. With decreased P levels, the infection rate and dependency of hot peppers increased. The content of P and K of AMF-inoculated hot peppers increased with increasing P levels, but the shoot to root ratio of those elements decreased. The results of this study showed that inoculation of AMF would be effective in promoting growth of hot pepper seedlings and increase transplant adaptation due in part to the resulted higher root development.

Comparison of Satisfaction on Each Major Dept. of Health-Related Universities Located in Busan and Gyeongnam (부산, 경남 지역 보건계열 대학(교)의 전공학과별 전공만족도 비교)

  • This study is to investigate the satisfaction rate and relative factors from the students majored in Radiology, Clinical Pathology and Physical Therapy, which can provide basic knowledge of satisfaction and guide the university life and further careers. The survey was performed with respect to 107 students of Radiology, 97 of Clinical Pathology and 89 of Physical Therapy at three-year or four-year colleges(universities) located in Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do. The results show that the satisfaction rate through whole majors was $3.40{\pm}0.57$ point. The scores of each major are: $3.38{\pm}0.62$ for Radiology, $3.37{\pm}0.56$ for Clinical Pathology, and $3.45{\pm}0.50$ for Physical Therapy. The score of social status was highest and the environment of major was the lowest. The satisfaction of three-year colleges was higher than that of four-year universities. Academic system, social status and adaptation to major affected satisfaction on major. In addition job outlook affected on all majors. Thus, we propose that every major must be equipped with specialized environment different from general colleges (universities), and provide environment where students can cause self-motivation. In addition, we found the special way to improve social status and satisfaction by using career guidance, offering career information and performing university-industry collaborations. Especially, it is important to improve the satisfaction on major of students at four-year universities.

An improvement in FGS coding scheme for high quality scalability (고화질 확장성을 위한 FGS 코딩 구조의 개선)

  • FGS (fine granularity scalability) supporting scalability in MPEG-4 Part 2 is a scalable video coding scheme that provides bit-rate adaptation to varying network bandwidth thereby achieving of its optimal video quality. In this paper, we proposed FGS coding scheme which performs one more bit-plane coding for residue signal occured in the enhancement-layer of the basic FGS coding scheme. The experiment evaluated in terms of video quality scalability of the proposed FGS coding scheme by comparing with FGS coding scheme of the MPEG-4 verification model (VM-FGS). The comparison was conducted by analysis of PSNR values of three tested video sequences. The results showed that when using rate control algorithm VM5+, the proposed FGS coding scheme obtained Y, U, V PSNR of 0.4 dB, 9.4 dB, 9 dB averagely higher and when using fixed QP value 17, obtained Y, U, V PSNR of 4.61 dB, 20.21 dB, 16.56 dB averagely higher than the existing VM-FGS. From results, we found that the proposed FGS coding scheme has higher video quality scalability to be able to achieve video quality from minimum to maximum than VM-FGS.
