  • In this paper, we investigate a fast speaker adaptation method based on eigenvoice in several noisy environments. In order to overcome its weakness against noise, we propose a noisy environment clustering method which divides the noisy adaptation utterances into utterance groups with similar environments by the vector quantization based clustering using a cepstral mean as a feature vector. Then each utterance group is used for adaptation to make an environment dependent model. According to our experiment, we obtained 19-37 % relative improvement in error rate compared with the simultaneous speaker adaptation and environmental compensation method

  • In this paper. we propose the bias compensation methods and the eigenvoice method using the mean of dimensional eigenvoice to improve the performance of rapid speaker adaptation based on eigenvoice under mismatch between training and test environment. Experimental results for vocabulary-independent word recognition task (using PBW 452 DB) show that the proposed methods yield improvements for small adaptation data. We obtained about 22∼30% relative improvement by the bias compensation methods as amount of adaptation data varied from 1 to 50, and obtained 41% relative improvement in error rate by the eigenvoice method using the mean of dimensional eigenvoice with only single adaptation word.

  • This study investigated the luring effect of the sardine bait, which is used to catch octopus with pot, as the preliminary study for the development of alternative bait for octopus pot. The soaking time for bait was divided into "5 days or less" and "11 days or longer" The number of times octopus entered the pot with bait and the empty pot was investigated under dark adaptation and light adaptation processes and the distribution of tank section was investigated under light adaptation process. The case of "11 days or longer" sardine soaking time showed higher rate of distribution in the section of pot with bait compared to the case of "5 days or less" In the case of "5 days or less" soaking time, the number of times the octopus entered the pot with bait was similar to that it entered the pot without it even during dark adaptation and light adaptation. However, in the case of "11 days or longer", the octopus entered the pot with bait more quickly than the pot without bait and more frequently during dark adaptation hours. There were cases where the octopus did not enter any pot. In the case of "5 days or less", with less decomposition of baits, the octopus entered the empty pot more during light adaptation process, and it appeared that the pot was used as a hideout.

  • In this paper, we proposed a discriminative adaptation method for PMC algorithm and achieved improved speech recognition rate. For the adaptation, we adopted modified PMC(MPMC) which is a variant of PMC and discriminatively adapted the association factor for each mixture of the HMM in the MPMC. From the recognition experiments, the proposed method showed better recognition rate than the conventional PMC. Also, compared with STAR algorithm which is another model parameter compensation method, the proposed method showed superior performance when the SNR is very low and the adaptation data is not sufficient.

  • Recent studies have indicated that a significant improvement in wireless video throughput can be achieved by Cross Layer Design with Side-information (CLDS) protocols. In this paper, we derive the operational rate of a CLDS protocol operating over a realistic wireless channel. Then, a Rate-Distortion (R-D) empirical model for above-capacity Scalable Video Coding (SVC) is deduced to estimate the loss of video quality incurred under inaccurate rate estimation scenarios. Finally, we develop a novel Unequal Error Protection (UEP) scheme which leverages the characteristics of LDPC codes to reduce the distortion of video quality in case of typically-observed burst wireless errors. The efficacy of the proposed rate adaptation architecture over conventional protocols is demonstrated by realistic video simulations using actual IEEE 802.11b wireless traces.

  • Regardless of the distribution of the adaptation data in the testing environment, model-based adaptation methods that have so far been reported in various literature incorporates the adaptation data undiscriminatingly in reducing the mismatch between the training and testing environments. When the amount of data is small and the parameter tying is extensive, adaptation based on outlier data can be detrimental to the performance of the recognizer. The distribution of the adaptation data plays a critical role on the adaptation performance. In order to maximally improve the recognition rate in the testing environment using only a small number of adaptation data, supervised weighted training is applied to the structural maximum a posterior (SMAP) algorithm. We evaluate the performance of the proposed weighted SMAP (WSMAP) and SMAP on TIDIGITS corpus. The proposed WSMAP has been found to perform better for a small amount of data. The general idea of incorporating the distribution of the adaptation data is applicable to other adaptation algorithms.

  • This paper describes how to reduce the effect of an occupation threshold by that the transform of mixture components of HMM parameters is controlled in hierarchical tree structure to prevent from over-adaptation. To reduce correlations between data elements and to remove elements with less variance, we employ PCA (principal component analysis) and ICA (independent component analysis) that would give as good a representation as possible, and decline the effect of over-adaptation. When we set lower occupation threshold and increase the number of transformation function, ordinary WLLR adaptation algorithm represents lower recognition rate than SI models, whereas the proposed MLLR adaptation algorithm represents the improvement of over 2% for the word recognition rate as compared to performance of SI models.

  • This study was conducted to investigate dietary adaptations and use of university foodservice in Korea according to the religion of international students. The survey was conducted from April to June in 2017 and included 609 subjects studying at a university in Busan. Muslims showed the highest percentage of eating three meals per day (42.4%) but the highest rate of eating unbalanced meals (64.7%) and midnight meals (41.8%). The most frequent problematic eating habit among Buddhists was irregular mealtimes (46.0%). Adaptation frequency to Korean diet was lowest among Muslims and highest among Christians. Securing halal foods was difficult for Muslims in Korea, and demand for halal foods as a school restaurant menu was high. The response rate for experiencing Korean food at university foodservice was highest among Christians (79.7%) and lowest among Muslims (45.3%). The main reason for not using university foodservice for Muslims was "no menu to eat" for religious reasons, and other religious groups cited "lack of menu variety." Preferred types and recipes of meats, fish, and vegetables also showed significant differences according to religion. As a result, efforts should be made to increase adaptation to life abroad in Korea, including changes in university foodservice management, considering the religious characteristics of international students.

  • This paper proposes a link adaptation method for Underwater Internet of Things (IoT), which reduces power consumption of sensor nodes and improves the throughput of network in underwater IoT network. Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) technique is one of link adaptation methods. AMC uses the strong correlation between Signal Noise Rate (SNR) and Bit Error Rate (BER), but it is difficult to apply in underwater IoT as it is. Therefore, we propose the machine learning based AMC technique for underwater environments. The proposed Modulation Coding and Scheme (MCS) prediction model predicts transmission method to achieve target BER value in underwater channel environment. It is realistically difficult to apply the predicted transmission method in real underwater communication in reality. Thus, this paper uses the high accuracy BER prediction model to measure the performance of MCS prediction model. Consequently, the proposed AMC technique confirmed the applicability of machine learning by increase the probability of communication success.

  • TCP is ill-suited to real-time multimedia applications. Its bursty transmission, and abrupt and frequent wide rate fluctuations cause high delay jitters and sudden quality degradation of multimedia applications. Deploying non congestion controlled traffic results in extreme unfairness towards competing TCP traffic. Therefore, they need to be enhanced with congestion control schemes that not only am at reducing loss ratios and improve bandwidth utilization but also are fair towards competing TCP connections. This paper proposes a differentiated rate adaptation algorithm based on loss and round trip time. Rate in a sender quickly responds to loss ratio and holds steady state. Additionally, this algorithm reduces loss ratio by loss prediction in a receiver.
