  • Intestinal phosphate (Pi) absorption across the apical membrane of small intestinal epithelial cells is mainly mediated by the type IIb Na-coupled phosphate co-transporter (NaPi-IIb), but its expression and regulation in the chicken remain unclear. In the present study, we investigated the mRNA and protein levels of NaPi-IIb in three regions of chicken small intestine, and related their expression levels to the rate of net phosphate absorption. Our results showed that maximal phosphate absorption occurs in the jejunum, however the highest expression levels of NaPi-IIb mRNA and protein occurs in the duodenum. In response to a low-Pi diet (TP 0.2%), there is an adaptive response restricted to the duodenum, with increased brush border membrane (BBM) Na-Pi transport activity and NaPi-IIb protein and mRNA abundance. However, when switched from a low-(TP 0.2%) to a normal diet (TP 0.6%) for 4 h, there is an increase in BBM NaPi-IIb protein abundance in the jejunum, but no changes in BBM NaPi-IIb mRNA. Therefore, our study indicates that Na-Pi transport activity and NaPi-IIb protein expression are differentially regulated in the duodenum vs the jejunum in the chicken.

  • In the present study, we suggest a new way to reactivate performance of direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) and explain its mechanism by employing electrochemical analyses like chronoamperometry (CA) and cyclic voltammogram (CV). For the evaluation of DFAFC performance, palladium (Pd) and platinum (Pt) are used as anode and cathode catalysts, respectively, and are applied to a Nafion membrane by catalyst-coated membrane spraying. After long DFAFC operation performed at 0.2 and 0.4 V and then CV test, DFAFC performance is better than its initial performance. It is attributed to dissolution of anode Pd into $Pd^{2+}$. By characterizations like TEM, Z-potential, CV and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, it is evaluated that such dissolved $Pd^{2+}$ ions lead to (1) increase in the electrochemically active surface by reduction in Pd particle size and its improved redistribution and (2) increment in the total oxidation charge by fast reaction rate of the Pd dissolution reaction.

  • The method of vocal tract normalization is a successful method for improving the accuracy of inter-speaker normalization. In this paper, we present an intra-speaker warping factor estimation based on pitch alteration utterance. The feature space distributions of untransformed speech from the pitch alteration utterance of intra-speaker would vary due to the acoustic differences of speech produced by glottis and vocal tract. The variation of utterance is two types: frequency and amplitude variation. The vocal tract normalization is frequency normalization among inter-speaker normalization methods. Therefore, we have to consider amplitude variation, and it may be possible to determine the amplitude warping factor by calculating the inverse ratio of input to reference pitch. k, the recognition results, the error rate is reduced from 0.4% to 2.3% for digit and word decoding.

  • During the 20th century, humankind went through the most significant changes in history, from industrial and agricultural revolutions to the invention of the personal computers and the internet, and changes continue to come at an even faster rate. One of notable change is emerging multicultural societies. People tended to live in a monocultural society and new cultures were infused in controlled and confined manners, however, people now live and eat in a continuously changing multicultural society Multicultural societies are emerged from the translocation of people (immigration) and, in a larger sense, globalization. Immigrants are faced with various and different cultures from their own, resulting in excitements and agonies in finding balance among many cultures. People who have not translocated themselves must also deal with various imported foreign cultures from fastfood restaurants to food beliefs. This lecture will use Korean Americans as an example to discuss how immigrants navigate different cultures and environments and how acculturation, the process of adaptation, affects their diet and health. In addition, how globalization has changed people's eatery will be briefly discussed. Understanding impacts of living and eating in a multicultural society is meaningful and useful to find effective approaches to promote healthy lifestyles to people in this fast changing times.

  • Since the advent of man there has been a constant struggle to define social pattern, and understand ways of cultural thinking. Every culture has it's own limitations and freedoms, problems and expectations. For centuries now anthropologist, ethnographers have worked on mapping and defining these differences. These findings instigate the designers to formulate new design theories and research methodologies for drafting cultural specific solutions. The question arises 'in a cross cultural application how effective and applicable are the basic research methodologies'? Quoting one such example the 'Privacy' issue seems to be a very strong component in the Japanese culture but is often a deterring factor in allowing the 'home ethnographic study to take place effectively'. However in countries like India similar studies could have a more welcoming reaction owing to the adaptive social culture. Similarly, the high rate of 'Illiteracy' in rural India closes many doors for 'form filling' user surveys. This leads to the scope of research for understanding specific cultural traits that may effect adaptation and re-improvisation of these existing methodologies. Quite often the cultural traits of a country may lead in forming new research methodologies.

  • Griffth's and LCCMA which are Single-user detection adaptive algorithm are proposed for mitigate MAI(multiple access interference) and the near-far problem in direct-sequence spread-spectrum CDMA system and MOE Algorithm is proposed for MMSE(Minimum Mean-Square Error). This paper pertains to three types of Blind adaptive algorithms which can upgrade system functionality without the requirements from training sequence. It goes further to compare and analyze the functionalities of the algorithms as per number of interfering users or data update rate of the users. The simulation results was that LCCMA algorithm was superior to other algorithms in both areas. Blind application enabled a more flexible network design by eliminating the necessity of training sequence.

  • In this paper, we propose a layered video coding scheme which can generate multi-layered bitstream for heterogeneous environments. A new motion prediction structure with temporal hierarchy of frames is developed to afford temporal resolution scalability and the wavelet decomposition is adopted to offer spatial acalability. The proposed scheme can have a higher compression ratio than replenishment schemes by using motion estimation and compensation which can further reduce the temporal redundancy, and it effectively works with dynamic adaption or errors using dispersive intra-subband update (DISU). Moreover, data rate scalability can be attained by employing embeded zerotree wavelet (EZW) technique which can produce embeded bitstream. Therefore, the proposed scheme is expected to be effectively used in heterogeneous environments such as the Internet, ATM, and mobile networks where interoperability are required.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for optimizing a multiple pronunciation dictionary used for modeling pronunciation variations of non-native speech. The proposed method removes some confusable pronunciation variants in the dictionary, resulting in a reduced dictionary size and less decoding time for automatic speech recognition (ASR). To this end, a confusability measure is first defined based on the Levenshtein distance between two different pronunciation variants. Then, the number of phonemes for each pronunciation variant is incorporated into the confusability measure to compensate for ASR errors due to words of a shorter length. We investigate the effect of the proposed method on ASR performance, where Korean is selected as the target language and Korean utterances spoken by Chinese native speakers are considered as non-native speech. It is shown from the experiments that an ASR system using the multiple pronunciation dictionary optimized by the proposed method can provide a relative average word error rate reduction of 6.25%, with 11.67% less ASR decoding time, as compared with that using a multiple pronunciation dictionary without the optimization.

  • Preservation methods on the physiological and brewing technical characters in bottom and top brewing yeast strains were investigated. The preserved yeasts were reactivated after 24 months storage and grown up to stationary phase. The samples of filter paper storage indicated a higher cell growth and viability during propagation than those of nitrogen and lyophilization storage independent on propagation temperature. In addition, the filter paper storage demonstrated a faster absorption of free amino nitrogen and a highest level of higher aliphatic alcohols production during propagation than other preservation methods, which can be attributed to intensive cell growth during propagation. Moreover, the filter paper storage showed a faster accumulation for glycogen and trehalose during propagation, whereas, in particular, lyophilization storage noted a longer adaptation time regarding synthesis of glycogen and trehalose with delayed cell growth. In beer analysis, the filter paper storage formed an increased higher aliphatic alcohols than control. In conclusion, the preservation of filter paper affected positively on yeast growth, viability and beer quality independent on propagation temperature. In addition, in this study, it was obtained that the HICF and Helm-test can be involved as rapid methods for determination of flocculation capacity.

  • In this paper, we present a document image compression system based on segmentation, Quincunx downsampling, (5/3) wavelet lifting and subband-oriented SPIHT coding. We reduced the coding time by the adaptation of subband-oriented SPIHT coding and Quincunx downsampling. And to increase compression rate further, we applied arithmetic coding to the bitstream of SPIHT coding output. Finally, we present the reconstructed images for visual comparison and also present the compression rates and PSNR values under various scalar quantization methods.
