A pilot-scale sand-box experiment was performed in order to investigate the effect of cross-flow velocity on the clogging of the filter sand in a model filtration pond. The clogging phenomenon was observed during the operation with the cross-flow varied in stages in a range of 0~40 cm/sec, and the experimental result was analyzed using a numerical code. Results showed that the cross-flow velocity in this range had no influence on the development of clogging and that clogging occurred mostly on the filter-surface. It was found that while the production rate decreased from $5m^3/m^2-day$ to $3m^3/m^2-day$ the clogging coefficient of the top 50 cm layer increased up to about 30,000 sec, which corresponded to 87% of the clogging coefficient of the total 2.4 m layer. Of the clogging coefficient of the top 50 cm layer, surface clogging constituted 90% while the other 10% was intermediate clogging. It was also found that the surface clogging increased while the intermediate clogging remained constant as the operation continued, and that filtrate turbidity along the filtration depth remained constant in spite of the increase in clogging.

Wave overtopping is a significant natural hazard that occurs in coastal areas, primarily driven by high waves, particularly those generated during typhoons, which can cause coastal flooding. The development of residential and commercial areas along the coast, driven by increasing social and economic demands, has led to a concentration of people and assets in these vulnerable areas. This, coupled with long-term sea level rise and an increase in typhoon frequency, has heightened the risk of coastal hazards. Traditionally, the evaluation of wave overtopping volumes has relied on directly measuring the collected volume of water that exceeds the crest height of structures through hydraulic model experiments. These experiments are averaged over a specific measurement period. However, in this study, we propose a new method for estimating individual wave overtopping volumes. We utilize the temporal variation of wave overtopping heights to develop an observation system that can quantitatively assess wave overtopping volumes in actual coastal areas. To test our method, we conducted hydraulic model experiments on rubble mound breakwaters, which are commonly installed along the Korean coast. We introduce wave overtopping discharge coefficients, assuming that the inundation velocity from the structure's crest is the long-wave velocity. We then predict overtopping volumes based on wave overtopping heights and compare and review the results with experimental data. The findings of our study confirm the feasibility of estimating wave overtopping volumes by applying the overtopping discharge coefficients derived in this study to wave overtopping heights.
For the development of combustion technology of RDF(refuse derived fuel), combustion characteristics are examined in bubbling fluidized bed, circulating fluidized bed, continuos combustor and batch type combustor. The characteristics of combustion and exhaust gas has been compared and analyzed in many type of combustion facilities, which has been utilized as basic data for the advanced research of specified RDF combustion facility. Stable combustion has been observed in bubbling and circulating fluidized bed from controled operating condition like the proper feeding rate and superficial gas velocity. In circulating fluidized bed, concentration of NOx has been increased with the operating condition by the fuel-NO and oxygen reaction and $SO_2$ can be considered not to be produced in RDF fluidized bed from very low concentration in flue gas. HCl concentration is 36.4 ppm as average value and lower than standard emission value, but the counter plan is needed. Shaped RDF and fluff RDF have been compared in continuos combustor and batch type combustor and shaped RDF shows benefit for the stable heat recovery and gas emission shows similar value and characteristics.
The spawning behavior and developmental pattern of the Korean eleotrid fish (Odontobutis obscurus) was investigated in one of the tributary of Han River. The spawining of this species begins on April and continues up to August, whereas, the spawning. of same species were between the end of June and the middle of July in Kyushu, Japan. August The spawning places were the margin of river, its the bottom composed of sand and pebble (Table 5). The velocity of water in the spawning places was 0-40cm/sec, and the depth of waters was 10-40cm. The egg was spawned on underside of stone in the spawning places with one or two folds and ellipsoid in shape, 3.4mm in long diameter and 2.0mm in short diameter. The yolk is 1.2mm in diameter and yellow in color. For hatching of the egg, it takes one month in, $16^{circ}C~19^{\circ}C$ water, in Japan, whereas it takes only 14 days in $20^{circ}C~30^{\circ}C$ wate rin the study area. The growth rate of larva and juvenile fish were as follows: new hatched larva is 45mm in length; after 5 days it became 5.0 to 5.5mm in length and 1.2 to 1.5mm in height after 20 days. it became 11.0mm in length and 2.3mm in length. The mean size of the mature female is 110mm in total length and larger 10mm than that of the same fish found in Japan.
Purpose: In order to ensure that vegetable seedlings (with a soil block around their roots) are planted in an upright orientation after metering in a vegetable transplanter, they need to be dropped freely from a certain height. The walk-behind hand-tractor-powered machines do not have sufficient space to drop the seedlings from that height. In the present work, a hopper-type planting device was developed for the walk-behind hand-tractor-powered vegetable transplanter to ensure that the soil block seedlings are planted in an upright orientation. Methods: Various dimensionless terms were developed based on the dimensional analysis approach, and their effect on the planting of soil block seedlings in an upright orientation (planting efficiency) was studied. The optimum design dimensions of the hopper-type planting device were identified by the Taguchi method of optimization. Results: The ratio of the height of free fall to the sliding distance of the seedling on the surface of the hopper had the highest influence on planting efficiency. The planting efficiency was highest for plants with a height $15{\pm}2cm$. The plant handling Froude number, in interaction with the design of the hopper-type planting device, also significantly affected the planting efficiency. Of the hopper design factors, the length of the slide of the seedlings on the surface of the hopper was most important, and induced sufficient velocity and rotation to cause the seedling to fall in an upright orientation. An evaluation of the performance of the planting device under actual field conditions revealed that the planting efficiency of the developed planting device was more than 97.5%. Conclusions: As the seedlings were fed to the metering device manually, an increase in planting rate increased missed plantings. The planting device can be adopted for any vegetable transplanter in which the seedlings are allowed to drop freely from the metering device.

In order to develop the driving pump for High-speed Cavitation Tunnel(HCT) which can experiment the super-cavitating submerged body, KRISO decided on the pump specification, designed the mixed-flow pump on the basis of the existing pump data and predicted the performance of the design pump using commercial CFD code (CFX-10). After the manufacture and installation of the driving pump, KRISO conducted the trial-test for HCT, analyzed the pump performance and compared trial-test results to those of design stage. The trial-test items for the HCT driving pump are measurements of output current/voltage at the inverter of the driving pump and the flow velocity in the HCT test section. The trial-test results showed the decrease in the flow rate of about 4.6% and the increase in pump head of about 8%, compared with those of the pump prediction. After the trial-test, the performance of the driving pump is predicted using CFX-10 with measured flowrates and pump rotational velocities. Though there is some difference between trial-test and prediction results due to inadequate motor data, it is thought that the tendency is reasonable. It is found that CFX-10 is useful to predict a mixed-flow pump.

This paper shows numerical results for the estimation of the propulsor efficiency of Pre-Swirl Duct for 176k bulk carrier as well as its design method. Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations have been solved and the k-epsilon model applied for the turbulent closure. The propeller rotating motion is determined using a sliding mesh technique. The design process is divided into each part of Pre-Swirl Duct, duct and Pre-Swirl Stator. The design of duct was performed first because it is located further upstream than Pre-Swirl Stator. The distribution of velocity through the duct was analyzed and applied for the design of Pre-Swirl Stator. The design variables of duct include duct angle, diameter, and chord length. Diameter, chord length, equivalent angle are considered when designing the Pre-Swirl Stator. Furthermore, a variable pitch angle stator is applied for the final model of Pre-Swirl Duct. The largest reduction rate of the delivered power in model scale is 7.6%. Streamlines, axial and tangential velocities under the condition that the Pre-Swirl Duct is installed were reviewed to verify its performance.
Soils in the sloping uplands in Korea are subject to intensive land use with high input of agrochemicals and are vulnerable to soil erosion. Development of the environmentally sound land management strategy is essential for a sustainable production system in the sloping upland. This report addresses the status of upland agriculture and the best management practices for the uplands toward the sustainable agriculture. More than 60% of Korean lands are forest and only 21% are cultivating paddy and upland. Uplands are about 7% of the total lands and about 62% of the uplands are in the slopes higher than 7%. Due to the site-specificity of the upland, many managerial and environmental problems are occurring, such as severe erosion, shallow surface soils with rocky fragments, and loadings of non-point source (NPS) contaminants into the watershed. Based on the field trials, most of the sloping uplands were classified as Suitability Class III-V and the major limiting factor was slope and rock fragments. Due to this, soils were over-applied with N fertilizer, even though N rate was the recommendation. This resulted in decreases in yield, degradation of soil quality and increases in N loading to the leachate. Various case studies drew management practices toward sustainable production systems. The suggested BMP on the managerial, vegetative, and structural options were to practice buffer strips along the edges of fields and streams, winter cover crop, contour and mulching farming, detention weir, diversion drains, grassed waterway, and slope arrangement. With these options, conservation effects such as reductions in raindrop impact, flow velocity, runoff and sediment loss, and rill and gully erosion were observed. The proper management practice is a key element of the conservation of the soil and water in the sloping upland.

In order for electro-optical tracking system (EOTS) to have accurate target coordinate, accurate navigation results are required. If an integrated navigation system is configured using an inertial measurement unit (IMU) of EOTS and the vehicle's navigation results, navigation results with high rate can be obtained. Due to the time-delay of the navigation results of the vehicle in the EOTS and scale factor errors of the EOTS IMU in high-speed and high dynamic operation of the vehicle, it is much more difficult to have accurate navigation results. In this paper, an integrated navigation system of EOTS which compensates time-delay and scale factor error is proposed. The proposed integrated navigation system consists of vehicle's navigation system which provides time-delayed navigation results, an EOTS IMU, an inertial navigation system (INS), an augmented Kalman filter and integration Kalman filter. The augmented Kalman filter outputs navigation results, in which the time-delay of the vehicle's navigation results is compensated. The integration Kalman filter estimates position, velocity, attitude error of the EOTS INS and accelerometer bias, accelerometer scale factor error, gyro bias and gyro scale factor error from the difference between the output of the augmented Kalman filter and the navigation result of the EOTS INS. In order to check performance of the proposed integrated navigation system, simulations for output data of a measurement generator and land vehicle experiments were performed. The performance evaluation results show that the proposed integrated navigation system provides more accurate navigation results.
As post-harvest processes of onions are carried by a 20 kg-net package which results in high-cost and low-efficiency, especially, the insufficient drying and physical damage of onions after harvesting leads to a huge second loss in storage, we had developed a low-cost, high-efficiency post-harvest bulk handling machinery system by collecting onions on a farm using ton-bags, drying with forced air circulation, and sorting/packaging. The post-harvest bulk handling machinery system consisted of 6 devices, and this study designed an automatic feed hopper with a feeding rate control device, an inclined belt conveyor with a two-step chute, and an automatic pallet unloading device for feeding onions into the sorting/packing line. This study also analyzed the performance and control of the total system. The device had 1-ton handling capacity, but the operational condition was set to increase the capacity. The three-step filling method of pallet by the velocity control of the inclined belt conveyor was applied in the post-harvest bulk handling machinery system for the prevention of physical damage. If one worker was set to operate the total system, the time required to complete one palletized load was approximately 5 minutes and 5 seconds. The calculated daily handling capacity was approximately 94 tons, when the daily actual working time was 8 hours. When the developed system was applied to the managerial size of 2,000 ton, the processing cost per ton of the system was decreased by 19.5%, compared with the existing 20 kg-net package-based handling. The developed post-harvest bulk handling machinery system would be a good substitute for the rapid decline and aging of rural labor.
