  • Melting process of ice in a rectangular cavity with different temperature walls has been studied experimentally. Front shape of ice and melting rate were affected by initial temperature of ice and variation of temperature distribution and density gradient. When the hot wall temperature was below $8^{\circ}C$, the melting rates were higher at the bottom than those of at the top due to the density inversion, but with increasing the hot wall temperature the melting rates at the top were affected by hot wall and were higher than those of at the bottom. When the initial temperature of ice was low, melting rates were low, but with increasing the time melting rates were almost the same with those of each initial temperature of ice.

  • The operating thermal chracteristics of direct contact liquid-ice heat exchanger was experimentally investigated. In this paper, The effects of Ice Packing Factor(IPF), the inlet temperature and the flow rate of Heat Transfer Fluid(HTF) were stuided in the liquid-ice heat exchanger. Thermal stratification in liquid-ice heat exchanger was established clearly and faster at the higher inlet temperature and flow rate of HTF. At the end of melting of the lower flow rate is cleared the thermal stratification in liquid-ice heat exchanger. The temperature stratification is long with higher value of IPF of liquid-ice heat exchanger. The mean temperature of liquid-ice storage was changed rapidly with increasing flow rate and inlet temperature of HTF. The gradiant of ratio of total energy to latent energy was found higher with increasing inlet temperature and flow rate.

  • In this study, a test system which can test performance of curling pad was developed to support Korea curling team. The developed system consists of a water tank, a mechanical pad driving system that can perform sweeping movement using a curling pad on surface of ice made by the water tank, and temperature sensors monitoring ice and air temperatures. To control the temperature of ice and humidity/temperature of air around the ice, all system are installed in a chamber that can isolate the developed system from external environment. Eight kinds of curling pads were tested using the developed system. Test result showed that each curling pad revealed different rate of ice temperature increasing. The pad with the highest rate of ice temperature rising was found to be the same as the most preferred pad by the athletes. Therefore, it was confirmed that the method of measuring change of ice temperature by the sweeping performed in this study is an effective method to test the performance of the pad.

  • Ice cliff retreat and sea-ice formation around King Sejong Station in King George Island were analysed and compared with air temperature change. Analysis of 33-year (1969-2001) air temperature records at Bellingshausen Station has revealed regional atmospheric warming, and the increasing rate of air temperature Is equivalent to a warming of $1^{\circ}C$ for 27-year period. Here we present time-series of observations for the areal extent of the ice cliff and ice sheet, showing that they have retreated dramatically in the past 45 years (1956-2001). Retreat of 1,050 m in length of the ice clifr has changed the Marian Cove into a low rectangular form of 4 km in length and 1 to 1.3km in width. The retreat rates have since increased from 6 m/yr of the Primary investigated Period to 54 and 81m/yr in the recent years. Exceptionally, the ice cliff had been advanced of 21m in length for a year between 1987 and 1988 of cold winters. Ice sheet in King George Island also shows a similar decrease, and the decreasing extent is much larger at the southern part of the Main Cove, relatively more exposed to the sun, than at the northern part. Comparing sea-ice formation in winter with air temperature data shows a pattern starting to freeze below $-5^{\circ}C$ and to thaw over $-3^{\circ}C$. It is conclusively estimated that the patterns and magnitudes of ice cliff retreat and sea-ice formation are consistent with fluctuations of the air temperature, and that the recent rapid retreat of ice cliff and less formation of sea-ice are caused especially by the warming trends in autumn accompanied with expansion of summer thawing period.

  • In order to investigate the feasibility of a direct ice slurry transporting system for the purpose of district cooling, a case study of field application is performed. The research aims include the field measurement of ice packing factor, the performance of coldness delivery, and the branching characteristics of ice slurry. Two representative types of pipe branch are dealt with in this work. For the slurry flow with ice volume fraction of 0.16 or less, the pipe blocking due to aggregation is not observed. Based on the time-wise variation of temperature in the storage tank, a calculating method of ice packing factor is newly developed, which seems to be useful when the brine concentration is unknown. It is confirmed that the mass flow rate of ice slurry per unit cooling load is markedly reduced with increasing the ice content. The pumping power also decreases, but remains unchanged for high ice fractions. The distribution of ice particle before and after branching shows a good uniformity within the range of 5% difference, but yields a unique trend depending on the flow rate.

  • In this study, basic design data which were required for development of highly efficient ice storage system with low temperature latent heat were experimentally obtained. The ice storage system considered in this study was the one that has been widly used in the developed country and called the ice-on-coil type. Using the system, the ice storage performance for various design parameters which were the flow direction and the inlet temperature of the secondary fluid was tested. In addition, the timewise variation of the interface profiles between the solid and the liquid were visualized, and the heat transfer characteristics of the Phase Change Material(PCM) in the ice storage tank were Investigated. During the freezing processes in the ice storage tank with several vertical tubes, decrease of the heat transfer area and the heat resistance of the ice layer made the increasing rate of ice packing factor(IPF) less. The total freezing energy for the upward flow of the secondary fluid was higher than that for the downward flow. The average ice storage efficiency for the upward flow of the secondary fluid was higher than that for the downward flow.

  • For ten firn cores, from both the eastern and the western side of Lambert Glacier basin (LGB), snow accumulation rate and isotopic temperature were measured far the recent 50 years. Results show that snow accumulation for five cores over the eastern side of LGB (GC30, GD03, GD15, DT001, and DT085) at Wilks Land and Princess Elizabeth Land increases, whereas it decreases at the western side (Core E, DML05, W200, LGB 16, and MGA) at Dronning Maud Land, Mizuho Plateau and Kamp Land. For the past decades, the increasing rate was $0.34-2.36kg\;m^{-2}a^{-1}$ at the eastern side and the decreasing rate was $-0.01\;-\;-2.36kg\;m^{-2}\;a^{-1}$ at the western side. Temperatures at the eastern LGB were also increased with the rate of $0.02%o\;a^{-l}$. At the western LGB it was difficult to see clear trends, which were confirmed by Instrumental temperature records at coastal stations. Although statistic analysis and modeling results display that both surface temperature and accumulation rate has increased trends in Antarctic ice sheet during 1950-2000, the regional distributions were much more different for different geographic areas. We believe that ice-core records at Wilks Land and Princess Elizabeth Land reflect the real variations of SST and moisture change in the southern India Ocean. For the Kamp Land and Dronning Maud Land, however circulation pattern was different, by which the climate was more complicated. The International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition (ITASE) aimed to reveal an overall spatial pattern of climate change over Antarctic ice sheet for the past 200 years. This study points the importance of continental to regional circulation to annual-decadal scale climate change in Antarctica.

  • A new district cooling system using ice slurry for the uncertain cooling load of the future is presented. The chilled water produced by the absorption chillers is used for the base cooling load. The temperature of the chilled water is reduced by mixing of ice slurry depending on increasing of the cooling load. Finally, IPF of the ice slurry is increased up to 10% at the peak load. The transporting mass flow rate is decreased down to 44.7%, and the diameter of the main pipe is decreased down to 66.7%, but the diameter of the branched pipe is designed as the same size of the chilled water.

  • This study investigates the effects of the gelatin concentration (10-40%, w/v), freezing temperatures (from $-20^{\circ}C$ to $-50^{\circ}C$) and freezing methods on the structural and physical properties of gelatin matrices. To freeze gelatin, the pressure-shift freezing (PSF) is being applied at 0.1 (under atmospheric control), 50 and 100 MPa, respectively. The freezing point of gelatin solutions decrease with increasing gelatin concentrations, from $-0.2^{\circ}C$ (10% gelatin) to $-6.7^{\circ}C$ (40% gelatin), while the extent of supercooling did not show any specific trends. The rheological properties of the gelatin indicate that both the storage (G') and loss (G") moduli were steady in the strain amplitude range of 0.1-10%. To characterize gelatin matrices formed by the various freezing methods, the ice crystal sizes which were being determined by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are affected by the gelatin concentrations. The ice crystal sizes are affected by gelatin concentrations and freezing temperature, while the size distributions of ice crystals depend on the freezing methods. Smaller ice crystals are being formed with PSF rather than under the atmospheric control where the freezing temperature is above $-40^{\circ}C$. Thus, the results of this study indicate that the PSF processing at a very low freezing temperature ($-50^{\circ}C$) offers a potential advantage over commercial atmospheric freezing points for the formation of small ice crystals.
