  • Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) is suggested and employed in the policy to conserve soil resources and to manage the impact of development, since soil loss is very essential to nonpoint source pollution management. The equation requires only five factors to estimate average annual potential soil loss, USLE is simplicity provides benefits in use of the equation. However, it is also limitation of the model, since the estimated results are very sensitive to the five factors. There is a need to examine the application procedures. Three approaches to estimate potential soil loss were examined, In the first approach, all factors were prepared with raster data, soil loss were computed for each cell, and sum of all cell values was determined as soil loss for the watersheds. In the second approach, the mean values for each factor were defined as representing USLE factors, and then the five factors were multiplied to determine soil loss for the watersheds. The third approach was same as the second approach, except that the Vegetative and Mechanical measure was used instead of the Cover and management factor and Support practice factor. The approaches were applied in 38 watersheds, they displayed significant difference, moreover no trends were detected for the soil loss at watersheds with the approaches. Therefore, it was concluded that there is a need to be developed and provided a typical guideline or public systems so that soil loss estimations have consistency with the users.

  • This study investigates the importance of flood-influencing factors on the accuracy of flood risk mapping using the integration of remote sensing-based and machine learning techniques. Here, the Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and Random Forest (RF) algorithms integrated with GIS-based techniques were considered to develop and generate flood risk maps. For the study area of NAPA County in the United States, rainfall data from the 12 stations, Sentinel-1 SAR, and Sentinel-2 optical images were applied to extract 13 flood-influencing factors including altitude, aspect, slope, topographic wetness index, normalized difference vegetation index, stream power index, sediment transport index, land use/land cover, terrain roughness index, distance from the river, soil, rainfall, and geology. These 13 raster maps were used as input data for the XGBoost and RF algorithms for modeling flood-prone areas using ArcGIS, Python, and R. As results, it indicates that XGBoost showed better performance than RF in modeling flood-prone areas with an ROC of 97.45%, Kappa of 93.65%, and accuracy score of 96.83% compared to RF's 82.21%, 70.54%, and 88%, respectively. In conclusion, XGBoost is more efficient than RF for flood risk mapping and can be potentially utilized for flood mitigation strategies. It should be noted that all flood influencing factors had a positive effect, but altitude, slope, and rainfall were the most influential features in modeling flood risk maps using XGBoost.

  • Recently, the research of the analysis of the crime spatial is increased by using the computer information technology and GIS (Geometric Information System) in order to prevent the urban crime so as to increase the urbanization rate. In this paper, a probability map formed by the raster is organized by the quantification of crime risk per the cell using the region property of the urban spatial information in the static environment. Also, a map of the risk probability is constructed based on the relative risk by the region property, the relative risk by the facility, the relative risk by the woody plant and the river, and so on. And, this integrated risk probability map is calculated by averaging the individual cell risk applied to the climatic influence and the seasonal factor. And, a probability map of the overall risk is generated by the interpretation key of the crime occurrence relative risk index, and so, this information is applied to the probability map quantifying the occurrence crime pattern. And so, in this paper, a methodology of the modeling and the simulation that this crime risk probability map is modified according to the passage of time are proposed.

  • The point of this research is the use of the high resolution satellite image for local government's new address system, as well as spatially field investigation support and base map error finding. Most local governments use scale 1/1,000 and 1/5,000 digital map for base map and field investigation. But field investigator's knowledge insufficiency and the lack of base map's currency make things too difficult from the beginning of the project. As the way of solving this problem, this research offers the use of the high resolution satellite image in new address system with cadence data of digital base map. Until now satellite image is not suitable for our situation because it has low resolution. But this problem was solved for 1m space resolution satellite image and it is being applied wider and wider. Now vector data and Raster data are integrated for complimenting of each weak point. In this study the use of the high resolution satellite image in new address system is expected to improve the quality of the results and reduce the expenses. In addition the satellite image can use local government's fundamental data.

  • Recently the dramatical development of domestic spatial information technology and the successful construction of Korea NGIS(Nation Geographic Information System) have been the foundation of the scientific national territory utilization and management. However, there still exists the original problems to construct the thematic maps for supporting the various administrative services because administrative officials tend to depend on paper maps and inventories to generate spatial information, process, upgrade and manage. In this situation, there is a greater need to develop GIS system for the effective construction of various thematic maps. In this study, the satellite image based high accurate e-thematic construction and management system was developed to support the forest administrative service such as generating user based forest thematic maps, modifying them, analyzing and outputting through GIS, GPS and satellite images. For the case study, the previous forest paper map of Jeju Island was converted in format of raster and vector data using satellite images to maintain more exact location information so that this system helps to manage domestic spatial information scientifically and effectively within shorter time then support the standard for domestic spatial information. Moreover, this system plays the role of DSS(Decision Supporting System) for forest administrative affairs by integrating the attribute data, managing the GPS data and linking the multimedia data. For this, the additional main objective of this study was acquired powerful GIS component, which is called as e-mapping component, so that it could be regarded as enabling interoperability and reusability within this application. For the future works, the essential element idea and technology in this study could be applied very usefully to other official works such as constructing thematic maps and supporting the desired affairs.

  • The purpose of this study is to contribute enhancing the accuracy of viewshed analysis through the explanation for an analysis method of viewshed analysis using GIS. According to previous studies, the visible area using digital terrain in viewshed analysis depends on a visible interest area, scale of terrain, spatial resolution and surface data. In this study, we used trend analysis and RMSE analysis in order to find the effect of a visible interest area, scale of terrain, etc in viewshed analysis. Results of this study are as follows. First, the result of viewshed analysis depends on a visible interest area, scale of terrain, spatial resolution, surface data such as previous studies. Second, the results in forest area are reliable than those of flat area in terms of a visible interest area. Third, the results based on raster grid data are stable than those of TIN(triangulated irregular network) in terms of input surface data. Fourth, according to the result of trend and RMSE analysis, the spatial resolution for analysis is differently applied to different scales digital terrain map in viewshed analysis. In detail, it is desirable that the spatial resolution is set less than 10m(in the case of 1/1,000 digital terrain map), 20m(in the case of 1/5,000 map), 30m(1/25,000 map).

  • Numeric weather prediction is important to prevent meteorological disasters such as heavy rain, heat wave, and cold wave. The Korea meteorological administration provides a realtime special weather report and the rural development administration demonstrates information about 2-day warning of agricultural disasters for farms in a few regions. To improve the early warning systems for meteorological hazards, a nation-wide high-resolution dataset for weather prediction should be combined with web-based GIS. This study aims to develop a web service prototype for early warning of meteorological hazards, which integrates web GIS technologies with a weather prediction database in a temporal resolution of 1 hour and a spatial resolution of 1 km. The spatially and temporally high-resolution dataset for meteorological hazards produced by downscaling of GME was serviced via a web GIS. In addition to the information about current status of meteorological hazards, the proposed system provides the hourly dong-level forecasting of meteorologic hazards for upcoming seven days, such as heavy rain, heat wave, and cold wave. This system can be utilized as an operational information service for municipal governments in Korea by achieving the future work to improve the accuracy of numeric weather predictions and the preprocessing time for raster and vector dataset.

  • An image coding based on MRC model, a kind of multi-layer image model, first segments a screen image into foreground, mask, and background layers, and then compresses each layer using a codec that is suitable to the layer. The mask layer defines the position of foreground regions such as textual and graphical contents. The colour signal of the foreground (background) region is saved in the foreground (background) layer. The mask layer which contains the segmentation result of foreground and background regions is of importance since its accuracy directly affects the overall coding performance of the codec. This paper proposes a new layer segmentation algorithm for the MRC based image coding. The proposed method extracts text pixels from the background using morphological top hat filtering. The application of white or black top hat transformation to local blocks is controlled by the information of relative brightness of text compared to the background. In the proposed method, the boundary information of text that is extracted from the edge map of the block is used for the robust decision on the relative brightness of text. Simulation results show that the proposed method is superior to the conventional methods.
