  • Large magneto crystalline anisotropy energy and demagnetization energy of rare earth-transition metal (RF-TM) alloys play roles of bottlenecks towards their commercial applications for giant magnetostrictive and blue wavelength magneto optical recording materials, respectively. To solve the above problems, boron is added into amorphous RE-TM alloys to produce its electron transferring. The boron added amorphous RE-TM alloys show novel magnetic and magneto-optical properties as follows; 1) an amorphous $(Sm_{33}Fe_{76})$97B3 alloy obtains the magnetostriction of$ -550{times}10^{-6}$ at 400 Oe compared with saturation magnetostriction of$ -60{\times}10^{-6}$ in conventional Ni based alloys, 2) an amorphous$ (Nd_{33}Fe_{67})_{95}B_5$ alloy increases effective magnetic anisotropy to$ -0.5{\times}10^{-6} ergs/cm^3 from -3.5{\times}10^6 ergs/cm^3$ without boron, which correspond to the polar Kerr rotation angles of 0.52$^{\circ}$and 0.33$^{\circ}$, respectively. These results attribute to selective 2p-3d electron orbits exchange coupling (SEC).

  • In this study, we developed a method for manufacturing high strength gray cast irons by adding a rare earth element (R.E.) included in a spent permanent magnet scrap to gray cast irons. The improvement of the mechanical properties of gray cast irons is attributed to A-type graphite formation promoted by complex sulfide, which was formed by R.E. in the spent magnets during a solidification process. The cast specimen inoculated by R.E. in the spent magnet scrap showed excellent tensile strength up to 306 MPa, and is similar to that of the specimen inoculated by expensive misch-metal. In this regards, we concluded that the cheap spent magnets scrap is a very efficient inoculation agent in fabrication of high performance gray cast irons.

  • This study aims to investigate the microstructures and mechanical properties of DCI manufactured by sand and metal mold casting. To prohibit the formation of the chill, carbon, silicon and rare earth($0{\sim}0.2\;wt%$) were controlled and temperature of metal mold was constantly kept at $160^{\circ}C$. The sizes, counts and nodularity ratios of nodules were analyzed by image analysis device. Wear test using pin-on-disc wear tester was carried out under the conditions of load 47.2N, velocity 0.4 m/s and distance 2000 m. Tensile test using Instron type testing machine was performed with velocity of 0.1 mm/min according to the KS B 0802. The formation of the chill was not observed when percentage of the carbon and silicon were 3.8 and 2.5. Mechanical properties of GCD manufactured by metal mold were better than sand casting.

  • A new method for the preparation of lanthanide ions activated strontium aluminates phosphor by combustion method has been proposed. Combustion method consist of the redox reactions between the respective metal nitrates and urea in a preheated funace at $500^{\circ}C$. The luminescence behavior of the phosphor was studied and compared with corresponding phosphor prepared by conventional method. Effect of $Mg^{2+}$ ion concentration in strontium aluminate phosphor was investigated and the maximum luminescence of about $100cd/m^2$ was obtained. This method gave better brightness and small size to the phosphor than made by conventional method.

  • The import amount of rare metal in Korea is about 6,034 million USD, but the self-sufficiency of rare metals is about only 1%. In order to secure the stable supply of rare metals, it is necessary to operate an efficient stockpile system. In this study, we established a system to assess the adequacy of stockpiles by quantifying the risk factors of tangible and intangible risks in order to establish an efficient stockpile strategy. The model developed in this study aims to select the rare metals that need to be stockpiled first and to suggest the direction of the stockpiling policy in accordance with technological change and market change from the mid and long term viewpoint. The evaluation results derived from the model can quantitatively measure the security level of each rare metal and enable relative comparison between the rare metals using criticality matrix. Therefore, it is expected that more efficient stockpile policy will be possible if the proposed model is utilized in the future policy making.

  • It was grown Cubic $ZrO_2(10 mol% Y_2O_3)$ single crystals doped with 1 wt% rare earth metal oxides (RE=Ce, Pr, Nd, Eu, Er) by Skull method. It was investigated electrical properties on (111) plane of grown single crystals by Impedance Spectroscopy. It was potted relation between temperature and electrical conductivities and observed the transition at $약300-400^{\circ}$ It was obtained activation energy on the migration of oxygen vacancy between low temperature (before the transition) and high temperature (after the transition till ${\11}500^{\circ}$) and its difference can be seen the activation energy of the formation of oxygen vacancies by break up defect complexes. It was obtained the activation energy according as add yttria and rare earth metal oxides and discussed ionic conduction mechanism. Grown single crystals showed Ce: orange - red, Pr: golden - yellow, Nd: lilac, Eu: light pink, Er: pink due to dopant effect from the light absorption data in the visible range.

  • Long lasting phosphor materials are in great demand for their applications in the area of light emitting diodes (LEDs), commercial displays and warning signals. After glow longevity, brightness, photo-resistance and chemical and environment stability are most important qualities that are desired for these materials. Alumina as host lattice with various rare earth elements has been found to be good at the same time inexpensive material for the synthesis of the phosphor materials. This communication explored the effect of mixed rare earth metal on the luminescence properties of these materials for the first time. Various permutations and combinations of $Sr^{2+}$ and $Ba^{2+}$ have been investigated in order to achieve robust and high luminescence characteristics in the tailored phosphor materials.
