  • This paper reports the microstructure and electrochemical properties of Si-Al-Fe ternary amorphous alloys prepared by rapid solidification as an anode for lithium secondary batteries. The microstructure was analyzed using XRD and HR-TEM with EDS mapping. In accordance with DSC analysis, annealing was performed to crystallize the active nano-Si in the amorphous alloy. Thus, nano-Si forms (~80 nm) embedded in the matrix alloy, such as $Fe_2Al_3Si_3$, $FeSi_2$, and $Fe_{0.42}Si_{2.67}$, were successfully synthesized. The electrode based on the Si-Al-Fe ternary alloy delivered an initial discharge capacity of approximately $700mAh^{g-1}$, and exhibited a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.0~99.6% from the $2^{nd}$ to $70^{th}$ cycles.

  • To provide the various machining materials with excellent quality and dimensional accuracy, high -speed machining is very useful tool as one of the most effective rapid manufacturing processes. However, high-speed machining is not suitable for microscale thin-walled structures because of the lack of the structure stiffness to resist the cutting force. A new method which is able to make a very thin-walled structure rapidly will be proposed in this paper. This method is composed two processes, high-speed machining and filling process. Strong workholding force comes out of the solidification of filling materials. Low-melting point metal alloys are used in order to minimize the thermal effect during phase change and to hold arbitrary shape thin-walled structures quickly during high-speed machining. To verify the usefulness of this method, we will show some applications, for examples thin -wall cylinders and hemispherical shells, and compare the experimental results to analyze the dimensional accuracy of typical parts of the structures.

  • Rapid Prototyping(RP) techniques have their unique characteristics according to the working principles: stair-stepped surface of parts due to layer-by-layer stackin, low build speed caused by line-by-line solidification to build one layer, and additional post processing to improve surface roughness, so it is required very high cost to introduce and to maintain RP apparatus. The objective of this study is to develop software for automatic generation of unit shape part (USP) for a new RP process, Variable Lamination Manufacturing using linear hotwire cutting technique and expandable polystyrene foam sheet as part material (VLM-S). In order to examine the applicability of the developed software to VLM-S, USP's of general three-dimensional shapes, such as an auto-shift lever knob and a pyramid shape were generated.

  • Generally, the build-up printed circuit board manufactured by the sequential process with etching, plating, drilling etc. requires many types of equipments and lead time. Etching process is suitable for mass production, however, it is not adequate for manufacturing prototype in the developing stage. In this study, we introduce a screen printing technology to prototyping a build-up printed circuit board. As for the material, photo/thermal curable resin and conductive paste are used for the formation of dielectric and conductor. The build-up structure is made by subsequent processes such as the formation of liquid resin thin layer, the solidification by UV/IR light, and via filling with conductive paste. By use of photo curable resin, productivity is greatly enhanced compared with thermal curable resin. Finally, the basic concept and the possibility of build-up printed circuit board prototyping are proposed in comparison with to the conventional process.

  • Metal fibers of Al and stainless steel were fabricated by the PDME method and the Taylor process. Tensile strength of metal fiber produced by both the PDME method and the Taylor process was much higher than that of conventionally solidified materials. Utilizing the PDME method, Al fiber with $100\;{\mu}m$ was fabricated under Ar gas atmosphere, and stainless steel fiber with $50\;{\mu}m$ was fabricated under 0.06 Torr vacuum. Continuous fiber of stainless steel was made by the Taylor process and the surface of this fiber was smother than that fabricated by the PDME method.

  • stereolithography is a process used to rapidly produce polymer components directly from a computer representation of the part. There are several considerations to be made for the efficient use of the process. Especially, the necessity of support structures, which prevent the part from warping, sagging, or parachuting and toppling as the elevator moves up and down in the resin, is one concern. After solidification, the support structures must by removed in the end. Bacause this post-treatment process is often performed manually, the more the support structures, the more it increases the finishing operations. Especially for a complicated part, the removal operations may be difficult, take so much time, and even reduce the accuracy of the product. Thus it is important to efficiently generate the efficient support structure for each part geometry. This paper proposes a procedure to automatically generate the supprot structures focused on accuracy, efficiency, convenience, and generation speed.

  • The p-type thermoelectric compounds of $Bi_2Te_3$ based doped with 3wt% Te were fabricated by a combination of rapid solidification and spark plasma sintering (SPS) process. The effect of holding time during spark plasma sintering (SPS) on the microstructure and thermoelectric properties were investigated using scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermoelectric properties. The powders as solidified consisted of homogeneous thermoelectric phases. The thermoelectric figure of merit measured to be maximum ($3.41{\times}10^{-3}/K$) at the SPS temperature of $430^{\circ}C$.

  • During the past five years a very successful effort has been made to improve existing and develop new aluminium alloys. The progress achieved has been possible because of the development of new production methods, such as powder metallurgy and spray/deposition. These methods make use of rapid solidification process which alloys compositions other than those achieved by conventional ingot metallurgy. The ingot metallurgy of the 2000 and 7000 series used thus far, as well as the age hardening Al-Li alloys, show several disadvantages caused by the production process. Such problems are primarily coarse intermetallic constituent phases, coarse grains and macrosegregation, resulting in low fracture toughness. The present contribution reports results of an experimental investigation performed on a modern high strength spay deposited aluminium alloy of the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu (7075 and the modified 7150X) type. Results are given in terms of its microstructural characterization by using X-ray diffractomertry and transmission electron microscopic. The mechanical propierties of those alloys in the as-extruded and extruded+aged condition were evaluated by using microhardness Vickers, tensile test and fracture toughness measurements.

  • Formation and thermal stability of a quasicrystalline phases in Al-Fe-Mo alloys were investigated by means of melt-spinning process and subsequent heat treatment test. Thermal decomposition and phase transformation process of the as-spun alloys were studied using X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The melt-spun Al-Fe-Mo alloys contained an icosahedral quasicrystalline phase with a quasilattice constant of 0.457 nm. Icosahedral phase formed at a composition of $Al_{82.5}Fe_{14}Mo_{3.5}$ as a metastable phase during rapid solidification was transformed into the stable crystalline phases, cubic 1/0 approximant and monoclinic ${\lambda}$-phase, upon heating. A metastable icosahedral and cubic(a = 0.93 nm) phases in as-spun $Al_{65}Fe_{20}Mo_{15}$ alloy were decomposed into two cubic(a = 0.62, 0.31 nm) phases by heat treatment.

  • A new process using rapid solidification (melt spinning method) followed by pressing and sintering was investigated to produce the n-type thermoelectric ribbons of 90% $Bi_2Te_3$+10% $Bi_2Se_3$ doped with $CdCl_2$. Quenched ribbons are very brittle and consisted of homogeneous $Bi_2Te_3-Bi_2Se_3$ pseudo-binary solid solutions. Property variations of the materials was investigated as a function of variables, such as dopant $CdCl_2$ quantity and sintering temperature. When the process parameters were optimized, the maximum figure of merit was $2.146{\times}10^{-3}K^{-1}$.
