This study was performed to investigate the effects of dry powders, ethanol extracts and juices of radish and onion on lipid metabolism, lipid peroxidation and antioxidative enzyme activity in rats. Forty-nine male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 157$\pm$6g were blocked into seven groups according to body weight and raised for four weeks with diets containing 5%(w/w) dry powders of two different vegetables consumed frequently by Korean-radish(Raphanus sativus L.) and onion(Allium cepa L.), ethanol extracts and juices from equal amount of each dry powder. All the powders, ethanol extracts and juices of radish and onion decreased total lipids, triglycerides and total cholesterol concentrations in plasma and liver. Above all, onion ethanol extract decreased them most remarkably. It was thought that organosulfur compounds and flavonoids extracted from onion by ethanol inhibited biosynthesis and absorption of lipid and promoted degradation of lipid. Radish powder also decreased them by increasing fecal excretions of total lipids, triglycerides and total cholesterol most effectively. Catalase and glutathine peroxidase(GSH-px) activities in red blood cell(RBC) were most remarkably increased by radish powder and onion powder respectively. Superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase and GSH-px activities in liver were most remarkably increased by onion ethanol extract, radish powder and onion ethanol extract respectively. Xanthine oxidase(XOD) activities in liver were most effectively decreased by ethanol extracts of radish and onion. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) levels in plasma and liver of experimental groups were significantly lower than those of controls. Above all, onion powder decreased them most effectively. It was thought that vitamin E and high flavonoids in onion powder inhibited lipid peroxidation, promoting liver and RBC SOD, catalase and GSH-px activities and inhibiting XOD activities effectively. Flavonoids in onion ethanol extract inhibited lipid peroxidation, promoting three antioxident enzyme activities and inhibiting XOD activities most remarkably. Also flavonoids and high vitamin C in radish powder inhibited lipid peroxidation, promoting liver and RBC catalase most remarkably and inhibiting XOD activities. In conclusion, radish and onion were effective in lowering lipid levels and inhibiting of lipid peroxidation in animal tissue. From these data, radish and onion can be recommended in the treatment and prevention of diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer and in delaying aging. As ethanol from onion were most effective in lowering lipid level and promoting three antioxident enzymes, and inhibited lipid peroxidation as did we should try to utilize onion skin which is discarded though reported to have abundant flavonoids. Bibimbab (mixed rice) is a traditional Korean one-dish meal. This study was carried out to investigate the anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects of raw and seasoned ingredients used in Bibimbab (Cucurbita moschata P., Platycodon grandiflorum A., Vigna radiata L., Porphyra yezonensis udea, Allium ampeloprasum L., Pterdium aguilinum, Raphanus sativus). Human mast cells (HMC-1) were pretreated with 70% ethanol extracts of Bibimbab and further cultured for an appropriate time after the addition of phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) and calcium ionophore A23187. Cell viability was determined by an MTT assay. None of the ingredients showed cytotoxic effects at a concentration of 1.0 ${\mu}g/ml$. Anti-inflammatory effects were analyzed at 0.01, 0.1, and 1.0 mg/ml concentrations of the raw, seasoned ingredients of PMA. A23187 stimulated HMC-1. Among the various ingredients, seasoned A. ampeloprasum L. extract showed the highest inhibition of TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-6 secretion (90% and 93%, respectively) at a concentration of 1.0 mg/ml. The R. sativus extract showed the highest inhibition (85%) of IL-8 secretion. DPPH analysis of the antioxidation properties of the ingredients showed that raw and seasoned A. ampeloprasum extracts exhibited the highest DPPH free radical scavenging activity (67.50 and 73.65%, respectively). These results suggest that seasoned ingredients used in Bibimbab have lower anti-inflammatory effects in relation to TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-6 secretion than raw ingredients in PMA- and A23187-treated HMC-1. In addition, the seasoned ingredients showed a tendency to increase antioxidative activity. Therefore, the ingredients used in Bibimbab have potential as anti-inflammatory and antioxidation agents.
Municipal sewage sludge produced at the Daegu Dalseo River Municipal Sewage Treatment Station was applied to radish(cv. Altari) to develop as an organic fertilizer. The sludge contained 53.59% of organic matter, 2.89% of nitrogen, and 3.5% of phosphate, so it seems to be enough to use as an organic fertilizer. Although the Cd and Pb contents of the sludge were lower than the official standard levels for the by-product fertilizer, it seems to be needed more researches due to the accumulation of the heavy metals both in soil and plants. Application of the sludge increased soil pH, organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphate, exchangeable Ca and Mg contents, and CEC. Also application of the sludge tended to increase Cd and Pb contents slightly in soil. Application of the sludge increased N, $P_2O_5$, Cd, and Pb contents in plant and among the heavy metals Cd accumulated more than Pb. Yield of radish increased up to 1.000kg/10a of sludge in addition to the standard chemical fertilization or 3,000kg/10a of the sludge only.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of different mixture ratios of vermicasts on the growth of leaf beet(Beta vulgaris var. cicla), young radish (Raphanus sativus L), spinach(Spinacia oleracea) and lettuce(Lactuca sativa) The mixture of ratios of vermicast(fermented pig manure with sawdust) and peatmoss were 100%+0%, 60%+40%, 40%+60% and 0%+100%(control), respectively. The bulk density, particle density, pH, electrolytic conductivity, ash, total nitrogen, cation exchange capacity, available phosphorous and exchangeable cations increased significantly compared to those grown in the 100% of peatmoss(control). The significantly higher values of plant length, leaf area, shoot dry weight, root weight, root length and biological yield obtained were $40{\sim}100%$ and 40% of vermicast in leaf beet and lettuce, respectively. The young radish and spinach showed that significantly differences of shoot dry weight, root weight and biological yield in the mixture ratios of vermicast were $40{\sim}60%$ and 40% in young radish and spinach, respectively.
The amount of cellular components including soluble sugars, amino acids, organic acids and glucosinolates (GLS) was investigated during radish root processing to develop a radish beverage. The radish root was divided into two parts, white and green tissue, and processed separately by extracting the juice from the fresh tissue and from the boiled tissue to compare differences in the components content among the preparations. The overall palatability of both the fresh and boiled extracts from the green part of the radish was higher than that of the same extracts from the white part. The sweetness of extract by boiling increased and its pungency decreased, thereby the palatability increased by being compared to the fresh radish extract. The sweetness was affected by sucrose not by glucose or fructose of monosaccharides by showing different sucrose contents according to treatment comparing palatability. Malic acid was identified as primary organic acid, and the content was higher in both the fresh and boiled extracts from the white part than in the extracts from the green part of the radish. The fresh extract from the green part of the radish contained more essential amino acids, such as threonine and valine, and more hydrophilic amino acids including glutamic acid, aspartic acid, and arginine than those of the fresh extract from the white part, suggesting the green fresh part is more palatable than the white fresh part. The main sulfur compound was ethylthiocyanate in radish, and others were butyl isothiocyanate, dimethyl-disulfide, and 4-methylthio-3-butylisothiocyanate. The four GLS were detected much more in the fresh green and fresh white parts of the radish because they evaporated during boiling. The contents of the four sulfur compounds were higher in the white fresh part than in the green fresh part, which is likely the reason the pungency was higher and the palatability was lower in the white fresh part than in the green fresh part of the radish. The ascorbic acid content was higher in the fresh extract compared to the boiled extracts from both the green and white parts. Taken together, these findings indicate that fresh radish extract is superior to obtain in terms of retaining desirable nutritional and functional components for health.

Substitution effect of white radish' by-product (WRB) and tunic of sea squirt (TSS) for Undaria in feed on growth and carcass composition of abalone was determined. Eight-hundred forty juveniles were distributed into 12 containers. Three formulated diets were prepared in triplicate. A 15% Undaria was included in the control diet. The 15% Undaria was substituted with a same amount of WRB and TSS, referred to as the DRG and TSS diets, respectively. Finally, dry Undaria was also prepared to compare effect of the formulated diets on performance of abalone. The experimental diets were fed to abalone once a day at a satiation level with a little leftover. The feeding trial lasted for 16 weeks. Crude protein, crude lipid, and ash content of the experimental diets changed over all period of time. Higher crude protein and lipid and ash contents retained in all formulated diets compared to the Undaria were observed at 24 and 48 h after seawater immersion. Survival of abalone was not affected by the experimental diets. Weight gain and specific growth rate (SGR) of abalone fed the TSS diet was greater than all other diets. Weight gain and SGR of abalone fed the control diet was not different from those of abalone fed the WRB diet. Proximates of the soft body of abalone was affected by the diets. In conclusion, WRB and TSS are the promising feed ingredients to replace Undaria in abalone feed; especially, TSS is superior to either Undaria or WRB. The formulated diets produced improved growth performance of abalone over the single Undaria.

HanPoong Leading (HPL)-04 were prepared with different oriental medicines (balk of Kalopanax pictus balk, Chaenomelis Fructus, Angelica gigas root, Zingiber officinale, Raphanus sativus Linne and Saururus chinensis Baill.) to investigate the protective effects of HPL-04 on cartilage degradation in knee osteoarthritis (OA). Rat articular chondrocytes incubated with rhIL-$1{\alpha}$ markedly increased matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and 9 activities, decreased cell viability and reduced chondrogenic gene expression. 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, MMP-2 and 9 activities and real time RT-PCR indicated that HPL-04 counteracted these harmful effects in dose-dependent manner. In addition, for experimental OA in vivo, monosodium iodoacetate (MIA, 0.5 mg/50 ${\mu}L$) was injected into knee joints of rats and administered HPL-04 to rats for 4 consecutive weeks after MIA treatment. The experimental data showed that treatment with HPL-04 significantly prevented of MMP-2 and 9 activities in articular cartilage. Histopathological and micro-CT evaluations of the knee joints also revealed that HPL-04 effectively ameliorated MIA-induced degenerative OA. In conclusion, HPL-04 has potential applicability for the prevention and treatment of degenerative OA.
Common cruciferous vegetables, kohlabi (Brassica oleracea) and radish (Raphanus sativus), contain phytochemicals such as glucosinolates and carotenoids. Therefore, this study investigated the antioxidant and anti-adipogenic effects of kohlrabi sprout extract (KSE) and radish sprout extract (RSE). The total carotenoid and glucosinolate contents of KSE and RSE were $39.50{\pm}0.67$ and $76.73{\pm}2.75mg/g$, respectively. The total glucosinolate contents of KSE and RSE were $2.65{\pm}0.02$ and $8.13{\pm}0.54mg/g$, respectively. The in vitro-antioxidative activities of KSE and RSE were significantly increased in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, ${\beta}$-carotene and glucosinolate-enriched KSE and RSE significantly inhibited lipid accumulation and reactive oxygen species production during the adipogenesis of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. These results suggest that glucosinolate-enriched KSE and RSE, especially RSE, can be used in the treatment of obesity and as a natural source of antioxidants.
The chemical components of radish buds were investigated during the growth stage. The vitamin C and total phenol contents were lowered after 4 days of early sprout growth, and were 22.19 and 4.99 mg%, respectively. These increased according to the growth time, showing the highest value on day 8, 25.85 and 17.87 mg%, respectively. However, these values decreased around day 12, which seemed to be the bud end point. The major free sugar component of the radish buds was glucose, showinged the highest content on day 8. The total organic acid content gradually increased as the growth proceeded. The detected oxalic acid content was only small on day 8. During the early growth stage, the total and essential amino acids contents were 3,020∼3,575 and 1,206∼1,499 mg, respectively. These contents tended to decrease with growth time. Glutamic acid, aspartic acid and alanine were the major amino acid components (39%).

The effect of citric acid-aqueous chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$) treatment of radish seeds artificially contaminated with Salmonella typhimurium was studied. Radish seeds were inoculated by immersion, in more than 106 log CFU/g seed, of a suspension of S. typhimurium, dried, and stored sealed at $4^{\circ}C$ Radish seeds soaked in 200 ppm aqueous ClO2 solution for 10 min showed a bacterial reduction of 1.08 log CFU/g seed, and the lowering of microbial burden noted in seeds soaked in 2% (w/v) citric acid solution for 10 min was 2.89 log CFU/g seed. Next, radish seeds were exposed to 0.5% (v/v) glycerol solution for 10 min either before or after treatment with 200 ppm aqueous ClO2 or 2% (w/v) citric acid for 10 min. Glycerol exposure after citric acid treatment reduced bacteria by 3.46 log CFU/g seed, and glycerol treatment after aqueous $ClO_2$ treatment reduced the microbial burden by 2.14 log CFU/g seed. Both glycerol treatments yielded better elimination of S. typhimurium than did a single treatment with either citric acid or aqueous $ClO_2$. Radish seeds inoculated with S. typhimurium were treated throughout the entire growth period. Although radish seed treatment was effective, treatment by citric acid and aqueous $ClO_2$ after sprouting was not effective to eliminate S. typhimurium.
