This paper describes characteristics and procedure of the basic design of large scale solar thermal power plant system. The evaluation is based on the operating data of CESA-I, solar central receiver plant. In order to evaluate the solar irradiation on the receiver, it is necessary to calculate the amount of thermal energy consumption at steam turbine and storage system in the STPPS. Especially, it is need to take into account of the storage and operating time to design a plant efficiently. In addition, basic design is performed for the CESA-I using the software tool of THERMOFLEX program. Based on the results, It is at lowed to use the program to investigate detail performance of each units of the STPPS by varying the operating conditions.

This paper focuses on the design of a 12-kW small-scale supercritical CO2 test loop. A theoretical study, stabilization, and optimization of carbon dioxide were carried out with the application of a solar heat source based on solar thermal data in Pohang. The thermodynamic cycle of the test facility is a Rankine cycle (transcritical cycle), which contains liquid, gas, and supercritical CO2. The system is designed to achieve 6.98% efficiency at a maximum pressure of 12 MPa and a maximum temperature of 70℃. In addition, the optimum turbine inlet temperature and pressure were calculated to increase the cycle efficiency, and the application of an internal heat exchanger (IHX) was simulated. It was found that the maximum efficiency increases to 18.75%. The simulation confirmed that the efficiency of the cycle is 6.7% in May and 6.26% in June.

The purpose of this study is to establish the designing method of ORC(Organic Rankine Cycle) radial inflow turbines. RTDM(Radial Turbine Design Modeler) Ver.2.1 which is a preliminary design program of radial inflow turbines was developed to achieve this purpose. The 200kW-class radial inflow turbine for OTEC(Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion) was designed by using the RTDM Ver.2.1 and CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation was performed to verify the accuracy of RTDM Ver.2.1. With the result of simulation, the accuracy of RTDM Ver.2.1 was almost 94.6% based on the designed total enthalpy drop of the radial inflow turbine. Strategy of adjusting the mass flow rate was adopted on this study to satisfy the requirements of its power and rotor outlet's conditions for the designed radial inflow turbine. The mass flow rate was consequently increased to 21.2 kg/s for the designed 200kW-class radial inflow turbine for OTEC, and then Total to total and Total to static efficiency are 89.8% and 85.36% respectively.

Super-critical $CO_2$ ($S-CO_2$) Brayton cycle has been considered to replace the current steam Rankine cycle in Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (SFR) in order to improve the inherent safety and thermal efficiency. Several austenitic alloys are considered as the structural materials for high temperature $S-CO_2$ environment.. Microstructural change after long-term exposure to high temperature $S-CO_2$ environment could affect to the mechanical properties. In this study, candidate materials (austenitic stainless steels and Alloy 800HT) were exposed to $S-CO_2$ to assess oxidation resistance and the change in tensile properties. Loss of ductility was observed for some austenitic stainless steels even after 250 h exposure. The contribution of $S-CO_2$ environment on such changes was analyzed based on the characterization of the surface oxide and carburization of the materials in which 316H and 800H showed different oxidation behaviors.

The economic analysis for the power plant developed in the conceptual design phase is becoming more important and, research on process optimization for process development that meets the target economic is actively carried out. In the filed of power generation systems, economic assessment methods to predict the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) has been widely applied for comparing economic effect quantitatively. In this paper, the platform that design criteria of key component required to optimize economic of power cycle can be calculated reversely was established roughly and design criteria of the key equipment (Compressor, turbine, heat exchanger) required to meet the target LCOE (the LCOE of supercritical steam Rankine cycle) was derived when the supercritical $CO_2$ power cycle is applied to the coal-fired power plant.
In general, drum-type boilers are designed for base load duty and applied under constant pressure operation mode. Recently, however conditions often occur that even drum-type boilers have to operate at partial load conditions. A feasibility study on adopting the sliding pressure operation for drum-type boiler was conducted, and corresponding performance changes and effects on the equipment were analyzed by utilizing a process simulation model. As a result, the conclusion was reached that drum type boilers are able to adopt the sliding pressure operation and can improve of net efficiency at part load operation in spite of the Rankine cycle efficiency reduction due to the decreases in main steam pressure. Because of thank to improvement of high pressure turbine stage-1 internal efficiency and power savings of boiler feed water pump. The sliding pressure operation is advantageous in terms of stress level relief for boiler tube as well as maintaining the rating steam temperature at part load condition. However, cautions are required because the drum boilers have poor dynamic response characteristics which may get worse during the sliding pressure operation.
This paper presents the analytical results of the thermodynamic performance characteristics for a cogeneration system using regenerative organic Rankine cycle (ORC) driven by low-grade heat source. The combined heat and power cogeneration system consists of a regenerative superheated ORC and an additional process heater in a series circuit. Eight working fluids of R134a, R152a, propane, isobutane, butane, R245fa, R123, and isopentane are considered for the analysis. Special attention is paid to the effect of turbine inlet pressure on the system performance such as thermal input, net power and useful heat productions, electrical, thermal, and system efficiencies. The results show a significant effect of the turbine inlet pressure and selection of working fluid on the thermodynamic performance of the system.
The concept of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is simple and various types of OTEC have been proposed and tried. However the location of OTEC is limited because OTEC requires $20^{\circ}C$ of temperature difference as a minimum, so most of OTEC plants were constructed and experimented in tropical oceans. To solve this we proposed the modified OTEC which uses condenser discharged thermal energy of existing fossil or nuclear power plants. We call this system CTEC (Condenser Thermal Energy Conversion) as this system directly uses $32^{\circ}C$ partially saturated steam in condenser instead of $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ surface sea water as heat source. Increased temperature difference can improve thermal efficiency of Rankine cycle, but CTEC should be located near existing plant condenser and the length of cold water pipe between CTEC and deep cold sea water also increase. So friction loss also increases. Calculated result shows the change of efficiency, pumping power, net power and other parameters of modeled 7.9 MW CTEC at given condition. The calculated efficiency of CTEC is little larger than that of typical OTEC as expected. By proper location and optimization, CTEC could be considered another competitive renewable energy system.
Effective use of available energy sources is of general concern along with the issues of global warming and unstable oil price. As one of the effort to recover waste heat from industrial facilities effectively, researchers have interest in a technology called organic Rankine cycle(ORC), in which the working fluid is some organic liquid instead of water. Known to have poor efficiency already, this old technology is considered to give an innovative solution to utilizing low grade energy sources, by improving the efficiency. Nano fluidics, coatings and the use of additives are the examples of these efforts. In the present study, we present simulated performance of a horizontal tube type condenser geometry. N-hexanr and isopentane are compared to water vapor case under 1 atm and the inet cooling water temperature of $20^{\circ}C$. EES(Engineering Equations Solver) is used for the present work.
The Arabian Gulf region has one of the highest ocean temperatures, reaching above 35 degrees and ambient temperatures over 50 degrees in the summer. Two nuclear power plants (NPP) are being introduced in the region for the first time, one at Bushehr (1,000 MWe PWR plant from Russia), and a much larger one at Barakah (4X1,400 MWe PWR from Korea). Both plants take seawater from the Gulf for condenser cooling, having to modify the secondary/tertiary side cooling systems design by increasing the heat transfer surface area from the country of origin. This paper analyses the secondary side of a typical PWR plant operating under the Rankine cycle with a simplified thermal-hydraulic model. Parametric study of ocean cooling temperatures is conducted to estimate thermal efficiency variations and its associated design changes for the secondary side. Operational safety is reviewed to deliver rated power output with acceptable safety margins in line with technical specifications, mainly in the auxiliary systems together with the cooling water temperature. Impact on the Gulf seawater as the ultimate heat sink is considered negligible, affecting only the adjacent water near the NPP site, when compared to the solar radiation on the sea surface.
