  • Navier-Stokes computation based on a new simplified model is proposed to investigate the interactions of a moving shock wave with multiple vortices arranged in the serial manner. This model problem simulates shock-vortexlet interactions at the shear layer of a compressible vortex often observed in the experiment. Applying the Foppl's idea, we extended the Rankin's model generally used for the description of a single vortex to the multi-vortex version. The acoustic pulses accelerated and decelerated are successively generated and propagated from each shock-vortex interaction, which simply explains the genesis of eccentrically diverging acoustic waves appearing in the experimental photograph.

  • In the idealized model problem of the interaction between a planar travelling shock and a symmetric vortex, the physics of shock distortion and quadrupole sound generation are well known to many researchers. However, the authors have distinguished the weak waves reflected and transmitted by the complicated photograph images obtained from a shock tube experiment. In this paper, we introduces a parametric study based on Navier-Stokes simulation and Rankin vortex model to see the difference of shock deformation shapes. Four combination of the strength of shock and vortex are respectively selected from a parameter plane of shock and vortex strength extended to the strong vortex region. The result shows clearly discernable wave morphology for the main parameters, which is not yet explicitly mentioned by other researchers.

  • A theoretical model on shock-vortex interaction is investigated using a numerical technique to solve Navier-Stokes equations. The shock-vortex interaction generated by this model based on the classical Rankin vortex is precisely investigated for a benchmark problem: Dosanjh and Weeks experiment. In terms of shock dynamics, the interaction is categorized to three stages: shock distortion, shock split, and shock-shock interaction. The quadrupolar structure of the sound source produced by the interaction is far supported with the present model, and the difference between experiment and theoretical model is also discussed in this paper.

  • This paper presents a quasi-3-dimensional calculation method considering secondary flows in the impellers of diagonal flow blowers. A Quantitative estimation of the secondary flow effects is made by using secondary flow theories. In order to verify the validity of the adopted models, that is, span-wise mixing model and the tip clearance model, numerical simulations are performed for two different types of impellers of diagonal flow blowers which are designed differently. Numerical experiments are conducted for each of a constant tangential velocity type impeller, and a free vortex type impeller, both at two different flow coefficients. According to the simulation results, it was found that the present model considering span-wise mixing and tip clearance effect shows better agreements with the experimental data than those without these models in terms of the flow velocity and the angle distribution.

  • Typoon Maemi landed on the southern coast of Korean Peninsula at 21:00, September 12, 2003 with a central pressure of 950 hPa. A three dimensional (3D) inundation model was established to calculate the storm surge and flooded area due to Typoon Maemi. A field survey of storm surge traces in Masan City was carried out to evaluate the inundation water depth. Hydromet-Rankin Vortex model was used to calculate the atmospheric pressure and the surface wind fields. The inundation area, storm surge and typoon-induced current were calculated using the 3D model. The peak of computed storm surge in Masan Port using the 3D model was 238 cm, and the observed peak was 230 cm. The simulated storm surge and the inundation area showed good agreement with field survey data. The comparison of the 3D and the two dimensional (2D) models of storm surge was carried out, and the 3D model was more accurate. The computed typoon-induced currents in the surface layer of Masan Bay went into the inner bay with 30~60 cm/s, while the currents in the bottom layer flowed out with 20~40 cm/s.
