In this paper, a packet-reduced ranging method using a superresolution time of arrival estimation algorithm for a chirp-based real-time locating system is presented. A variety of ranging methods, such as symmetric double-sided two-way ranging (SDS-TWR), have been proposed to remove the time drift due to the frequency offset using extra ranging packets. Our proposed method can perform robust ranging against the frequency offset using only two ranging packets while maintaining almost the same ranging accuracy as them. To verify the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm, the error performance of our proposed ranging method is analyzed and compared with others. The total ranging performance of TWR, SDS-TWR, and our proposed TWR are analyzed and verified through simulations in additive white Gaussian noise and multipath channels in the presence of the frequency offset.

Two-way ranging methods such as TWR and SDS-TWR have been considered for many ranging systems because these methods are useful in the absence of synchronization. To estimate the location of a mobile node, complicated ranging procedures consisting of ranging frames between an anchor node and the mobile node are performed. Supporting multiple mobile nodes such as a few hundreds or thousands and several anchor nodes, the ranging procedures have the fatal disadvantage of processing delay and inefficient traffic bandwidth. On the other hand, the one-way ranging method is simple and fast, but susceptible to network synchronization. In this paper, we propose a method to modify asynchronous ranging equations to establish exact frequency or frequency offset, a method to estimate frequencies or frequency offsets, and a method to establish post-facto synchronization with anchor nodes. The synchronization for a node pair is adapted using instantaneous time information and corresponding difference of distances can be determined. We evaluate the performance of TWR, SDS-TWR and proposed ranging algorithms.

Aircraft radar has special function which is ranging from aircraft to ground of antenna boresight. Because ranging information is used to calibrate altitude of aircraft or to drop a conventional bomb, the measuring have to be precise and robust. Therefore, we propose a simple and efficient method using monopulse radar for ground ranging. Proposed method calculates balancing weight according to linearity of monopulse ratio and mixes two ranging measurements in proportional to the weight. By exploiting balancing weight, radar is able to react to various environment as monopulse ratio contains characteristics of clutter environment. As a result, robust ranging information can be achieved. We use DEM(Digital Elevation Model) in order to simulate heterogeneous environment. In experimental result, it is shown that proposed method shows better accuracy and precision in any environment.
Passive ranging is a critical part of machine vision measurement. Most of passive ranging methods based on machine vision use binocular technology which need strict hardware conditions and lack of universality. To measure the distance of an object placed on horizontal plane, we present a passive ranging method based on monocular vision system by smartphone. Experimental results show that given the same abscissas, the ordinatesis of the image points linearly related to their actual imaging angles. According to this principle, we first establish a depth extraction model by assuming a linear function and substituting the actual imaging angles and ordinates of the special conjugate points into the linear function. The vertical distance of the target object to the optical axis is then calculated according to imaging principle of camera, and the passive ranging can be derived by depth and vertical distance to the optical axis of target object. Experimental results show that ranging by this method has a higher accuracy compare with others based on binocular vision system. The mean relative error of the depth measurement is 0.937% when the distance is within 3 m. When it is 3-10 m, the mean relative error is 1.71%. Compared with other methods based on monocular vision system, the method does not need to calibrate before ranging and avoids the error caused by data fitting.

With the advancement and proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT), a wide range of location-based services are being offered, and various ranging methods are being researched to meet the objectives of the required services. Conventional ranging methods involve the direct exchange of signals between tags and anchors to estimate distance, presenting a limitation in efficiently utilizing communication resources in large-scale IoT environments. To overcome these limitations, active-passive ranging methods have been proposed. However, there is a lack of theoretical convergence guarantees against clock drift errors and a detailed analysis of the characteristics of ranging estimation techniques, making it challenging to derive precise positioning results. In this paper, an improved active-passive ranging method that accounts for clock drift errors is proposed for precise positioning in large-scale IoT environments. The simulation results confirmed that the proposed active-passive ranging method can enhance distance estimation performance by up to 94.4% and 14.4%, respectively, compared to the existing active-passive ranging methods.
Asynchronous ranging is one practical method to implement a locating system that provides accurate results. However, a locating system utilizing asynchronous ranging generates a large number of messages that cause transmission delays or failures and degrades the system performance. This paper proposes a novel approach for efficient congestion control in an asynchronous range-based locating system. The proposed method significantly reduces the number of messages generated during the reader discovery phase by eavesdropping on other transmissions and improves the efficiency of ranging by organizing the tags in a hierarchical fashion in the measurement phase. Our evaluation shows that the proposed method reduces the number of messages by 70% compared to the conventional method and significantly improves the success rate of ranging.
This paper describes a new method for performance improvement ultrasonic ranging system using V40 controller. Detectable range of ultrasonic ranging system depends on transducer frequency and bandwidth of the receiver, and damping of the transducer, etc. Conventional ranging systems are somewhat inaccurate because they do not have capability of compensating changes in medium condition. The novel ranging system overcomes this disadvantage by placing in the same medium a dummy sensor functioning as a standard calibrating instrument and by providing data processing capability using V40 controller.
The Wavefront Curvature Ranging (WCR) is an estimation method for a source range from the wavefront curvature of acoustic waves. The conventional method uses trigonometry to estimate the source range by assuming the sound speed as a constant. Because of this assumption, range error occurs in the ocean environment where the bottom reflection is clearly separated. In order to reduce the range error, Matched Wavefront Curvature Ranging (MWCR) was proposed applying the sound speed structure in the ocean environment and Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE). The range error was reduced in the results of the simulation on the proposed method. In the future, this method will be applicable to the sonar system if the reliability of ranging is confirmed by measured signal.

Compared to OWR (One-Way Ranging) method that requires precise network time synchronization, TWR (Two-Way Ranging) method has advantages in building an indoor WPAN (Wireless Personal Area Network) location system with lower cost. However, clock offsets of nodes in WPAN system should be eliminated or compensated to improve location accuracy of the TWR method. Because conventional clock offset elimination methods requires multiple TWR transactions to reduce clock offset, they produce network traffic burden instead. This paper presents a clock offset estimation method that can reduce clock offset error with a single TWR transaction. After relative clock offsets of sensor nodes are estimated, clock offsets of mobile tags are estimated using a single TWR communication. Simulation results show that location accuracy of the proposed method is almost similar to the conventional clock offset elimination method, while its network traffic is about a half of the conventional method.
Initial Ranging Detection and Synchronization is suggested for IEEE 802.16e OFDMA Systems. However ranging is vulnerable to the channel selectivity and other user's interference at low SNR. This paper presents enhanced ranging scheme that improves ranging detection process using the combine multiple FFT blocks and cope with channel selectivity and other user's interference at low SNR. Based on the ranging detection timing offset is calculated for synchronization.
