Performance Evaluation of SDS-TWR Ranging Algorithms for CPS Based on Accurate Wireless Localization (정밀한 무선측위 기반 CPS를 위한 SDS-TWR 거리측정 기법의 성능 평가)

  • Range-based real time localization systems require superior localization techniques as well as accurate ranging algorithms for better performance. To evaluate the ranging accuracy between two nodes in practical environments, this paper does not only present a qualitative analysis by computing a distance equation under SDS-TWR measurement model of no symmetry assumption, but also executes a quantitative evaluation by doing experiments after building up a test network employing the developed sensor node. Experimental results show that the ranging accuracy of the proposed implementation of IEEE 802.15.4a software stack is superior with smaller average error rate by 60% to one of the commercial Nanotron's reference development kit.

Development of Omnidirectional Ranging System Based on Structured Light Image (구조광 영상기반 전방향 거리측정 시스템 개발)

  • In this paper, a ranging system is proposed that is able to measure 360 degree omnidirectional distances to environment objects. The ranging system is based on the structured light imaging system with catadioptric omnidirectional mirror. In order to make the ranging system robust against environmental illumination, efficient structured light image processing algorithms are developed; sequential integration of difference images with modulated structured light and radial search based on Bresenham line drawing algorithm. A dedicated FPGA image processor is developed to speed up the overall image processing. Also the distance equation is derived in the omnidirectional imaging system with a hyperbolic mirror. It is expected that the omnidirectional ranging system is useful for mapping and localization of mobile robot. Experiments are carried out to verify the performance of the proposed ranging system.

Ranging Enhancement using Frequency Offset Compensation in High Rate UWB (고속 UWB에서 주파수 편이 보상을 사용한 거리추정 성능향상)

  • UWB signal with high resolution capability can be used to estimate ranging and positioning in wireless personal area networks. The clock frequency differences of nodes have serious affects on asynchronous ranging methods to estimate locations of mobile nodes. The specification of high rate UWB describes successive TWR method with the estimation of a relative clock frequency offset. In this paper, we complete the ranging equations using relative frequency offset and time information, and propose a method to estimate the exact frequency offsets. We evaluate the ranging algorithms with simulation. The results show that the performances of the algorithms using frequency offsets are very close without noise. But, at noise environment, the method of exact frequency offsets shows better performance than that of relative frequency offsets.

Active One-Way Ranging Method based on Post-Facto Wireless Synchronization in Wireless Sensor Networks (무선 센서망에서의 사후 무선동기 기반 능동형 단반향 거리추정 방식)

  • Two-way ranging methods such as TWR and SDS-TWR have been considered for many ranging systems because these methods are useful in the absence of synchronization. To estimate the location of a mobile node, complicated ranging procedures consisting of ranging frames between an anchor node and the mobile node are performed. Supporting multiple mobile nodes such as a few hundreds or thousands and several anchor nodes, the ranging procedures have the fatal disadvantage of processing delay and inefficient traffic bandwidth. On the other hand, the one-way ranging method is simple and fast, but susceptible to network synchronization. In this paper, we propose a method to modify asynchronous ranging equations to establish exact frequency or frequency offset, a method to estimate frequencies or frequency offsets, and a method to establish post-facto synchronization with anchor nodes. The synchronization for a node pair is adapted using instantaneous time information and corresponding difference of distances can be determined. We evaluate the performance of TWR, SDS-TWR and proposed ranging algorithms.

Asynchronous Ranging Method using Estimated Frequency Differences in Wireless Sensor Networks (무선 센서망에서의 주파수 차이 추정 비동기 Ranging 방식)

  • The clock frequency difference of sensor nodes is one of main parameters in TOF estimation and affect to degrade ranging algorithms to estimate positions of mobile nodes in wireless sensor networks. The specification of IEEE802.15.4a describes asynchronous TWR and SDS-TWR insensitive to frequency difference without any additional network synchronization. But the TWR and SDS-TWR can not eliminate sufficiently the effect of frequency difference of node pair, packet processing delay and its difference. Especially use of low cost oscillator with wide range offset, sensor node with different hardware and software can make the positioning errors worse. We propose an estimation method of frequency differences, and apply the measured frequency differences to TWR and SDS-TWR. We evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm with simulation, and make certain that the proposed method enhances the performance of existing algorithms with positioning errors less than 25 cm.

Ranging Performance Evaluation of Relative Frequency Offset Compensation in High Rate UWB (고속 UWB의 상대주파수 차이 보상에 의한 거리추정 성능평가)

The node works on its local clock and the frequency differences of nodes have serious affects on ranging algorithms estimating locations of mobile nodes. The low rate UWB, IEEE802.15.4a, describes asynchronous two way ranging methods such as TWR and SDS-TWR working without any additional network synchronization, but the algorithms can not eliminate the effect of clock frequency differences. Therefore, the mechanisms to characterize the crystal difference is essential in typical UWB PHY implementations. In high rate UWB, characterizing of crystal offset with tracking loop is not required. But, detection of the clock frequency offset between the local clock and remote clock can be performed if there is little noise induced jitter. In this paper, we complete related ranging equations of high rate UWB based on TWR with relative frequency offset, and analyze a residual error in the ideal equations. We also evaluate the performance of the relative frequency offset algorithm by simulation and analyze the ranging errors according to the number of TWR to compensate coarse clock resolution. The results show that the relative frequency offset compensation and many times of TWR enhance the performance to converge to a limited ranging errors even with coarse clock resolutions.

  • In this paper, a 24GHz FMCW radar system which measures the range and the relative velocity of a vehicle in close range is described. The intended ranging accuracy is 15cm and a possible system concept to achieve this objective is presented. The VCO nonlinearity correction method using a reference delay-line and the data extrapolation algorithms based on AR(autoregressive) model are applied. The implemented system shows relatively satisfactory results in ranging accuracy.

  • In the uplink of OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) based M-WiMAX(Mobile-Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) system, linear phase shift is caused by signals transmitted from multiuser with different delay time and thus, MAI (Multiple Access Interference) occurs. MAI degrades the performance of ranging code detection and delay time estimation in the uplink. Therefore, in this paper, we propose ranging algorithm, applying SIC (Successive Interference Cancellation) to the conventional ranging algorithm, to minimize MAI and to improve ranging performance. The proposed ranging algorithm is verified through the Monte Carlo simulation, which shows the improved performance of ranging code detection and delay time estimation compared to the conventional algorithms. Through compared with random access of the 3GPP LTE, we can know limit of ranging performance.

  • The localization accuracy in wireless sensor networks using ranging-based localization algorithms is greatly influenced by the ranging accuracy. Software implementation of HAL(Hardware Abstraction Layer) and MAC(Medium Access Layer) should seamlessly deliver the raw performance of ranging-based localization provided by hardware capability fully to the applications without degrading the raw performance. This paper presents the design and implementation of the software stack for IEEE 802.15.4a which supports normal ranging mode of the Nanotron's NA5TR1 RF chip. The experiment results shows that average ranging error rate with our implementation is 24.5% for the normal mode of the SDS-TWR ranging scheme.

Estimation of Noise Level in Complex Textured Images and Monte Carlo-Rendered Images

  • The several noise level estimation algorithms that have been developed for use in image processing and computer graphics generally exhibit good performance. However, there are certain special types of noisy images that such algorithms are not suitable for. It is particularly still a challenge to use the algorithms to estimate the noise levels of complex textured photographic images because of the inhomogeneity of the original scenes. Similarly, it is difficult to apply most conventional noise level estimation algorithms to images rendered by the Monte Carlo (MC) method owing to the spatial variation of the noise in such images. This paper proposes a novel noise level estimation method based on histogram modification, and which can be used for more accurate estimation of the noise levels in both complex textured images and MC-rendered images. The proposed method has good performance, is simple to implement, and can be efficiently used in various image-based and graphic applications ranging from smartphone camera noise removal to game background rendition.
