  • This paper proposes a new touch screen sensing method that improves the drawback of conventional single-line sensing methods for mutual capacitance touch screen panels (TSPs). It introduces a dual sensing and voltage shifting method, which reduces the ambient noise effectively and enhances the touch signal strength. The dual sensing scheme reduces the detection time by doubling the integration speed using both edges of excitation pulse signals. The voltage shifting method enhances the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by increasing the voltage range of integrations, and maximizing the ADC's input dynamic range. Simulation and experimental results using a commercial 23" large touch screen show an SNR performance of 43dB and a scan rate 2 times faster than conventional schemes - key properties suited for a large touch screen panels. We implemented the proposed method into a TSP controller chip using Magnachip's CMOS 0.18um process.

  • On-line phase tracking of an extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) and experimental vibration control of a composite beam with a sensing-patch are investigated. We propose a sensing-patch for the compensation of the interferometric non-linearity. In this paper, a sensing-patch that comprises an EFPI and a piezo ceramic(PZT) is fabricated and the characteristics of the sensing-patch are experimentally investigated. A simple and practical logic is applied for the real-time tracking of optical phase of an interferometer. Experimental results show that the proposed sensing-patch does not have the non-linear behavior of conventional EFPI and hysteresis of piezoelectric material. Moreover, it has good strain resolution and wide dynamic sensing range. Finally, the vibration control with the developed sensing-patch has been performed using Fuzzy logic controller, and the possibility of sensing-patch as a sensoriactuator is considered.

  • We studied experimentally and theoretically the vertical range of the confined electric field in the gap area of metamaterials, which was analyzed for various gap widths using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. We measured the resonant frequency as a function of the thickness of poly(methyl methacrylate) in the range 0 to 3.2 μm to quantify the effective detection volumes. We found that the effective vertical range of the metamaterial is determined by the size of the gap width. The vertical range was found to decrease as the gap width of the metamaterial decreases, whereas the sensitivity is enhanced as the gap width decreases due to the highly concentrated electric field. Our experimental findings are in good agreement with the finite-difference time-domain simulation results. Finally, a numerical expression was obtained for the vertical range as a function of the gap width. This expression is expected to be very useful for optimizing the sensing efficiency.

  • Immuno-sensing for high accurate and selective sensing was performed by fluorescence spectroscopy and surface plasmon resonance (SPR), respectively. Engineered assembly of two fluorescent quantum dots (QDs) with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and anti-BSA was fabricated in PBS buffer for fluorescence analysis of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). Furthermore, the same bio-moieties were immobilized on Au plates for SPR analysis. Naturally-driven binding affinity of immuno-moieties induced FRET and plasmon resonance angle shift in the nanoscale sensing system. Interestingly, the sensing ranges were uniquely different in two systems: e.g., SPR spectroscopy was suitable for highly accurate analysis to measure in the range of 10$^{-15{\sim}-10$ng/mL while the QD fluorescent sensing system was relatively lower sensing ranges in 10$^{-10{\sim}-6$ng/mL. However, the QD sensing system was larger than the SPR sensing system in terms of sensing capacity per one specimen. It is, therefore, suggested that a mutual assistance of FRET and SPR combined sensing system would be a potentially promising candidate for high accuracy and reliable in situ sensing system of immune-related diseases.

  • A flexible tactile sensor module based on polyimide matrix integrated with sensing elements and pluggable terminals connector was fabricated by polymer micromachining technology for robotic applications. The tactile sensor arrays are composed of $4{\times}4$, $8{\times}8$ and $16{\times}16$ sensing elements connected with pluggable terminals connector, respectively. Especially, both the tactile sensor array and the pluggable terminals are formed in the sensor module during the fabrication process. The fabricated tactile sensor module is measured continuously in the normal force range of $0{\sim}1N$ with tactile sensor auto-evaluation system. The value of resistance is relatively increased linearly with normal force in the overall range. The variation rate of resistance is about 2.0%/N in the range of $0{\sim}0.6N$ and 1.5%/N in the range of $0.6{\sim}1N$. Also, the flexibility of the sensing module is adequate to be placed on any curved surface as cylinder because the matrix consists of polymer and metal thin film.

  • This paper presents a high sensitive force sensing module to measure machining forces for a tip-based nanopatterning instrument. The force sensing module utilizing a leaf spring mechanism and a capacitive displacement sensor has been designed to provide a measuring range from 80$\mu$N to 8N. This force sensing module is mounted on a PZT driven in-feed motion stage with 1 nm resolution. The sample can be moved by a X-Y scanning motion stage with 5 nm resolution. In the patterning experiments, the machining forces were controlled and monitored by the force sensing module. Then, the patterned sample was measured by AFM. Experimental results demonstrated that the developed force sensing module can be used as an effective sensing device in the nanopatterning operation.

  • This paper presents a high-side switch driver IC capable of improving the current sensing accuracy and providing reverse battery protection. Power semiconductor switches used to replace relay switches are encumbered by two disadvantages: they are prone to current sensing errors and they require additional external protection circuits for reverse battery protection. The proposed IC integrates a gate driver and current sensing blocks, thus compensating for these two disadvantages with a single IC. A p-sub-based 90-V $0.13-{\mu}m$ bipolar-CMOS-DMOS (BCD) process is used for the design and fabrication of the proposed IC. The current sensing accuracy (error ${\leq}{\pm}5%$ in the range of 0.1 A-6.5 A) and the reverse battery protection features of the proposed IC were experimentally tested and verified.

  • Two design techniques for more accurate and more convenient hybrid positioning system with visible light communication (VLC) and ad-hoc wireless network infrastructure are proposed, in order to overcome the problems of high estimation error, high cost, and limited service range of the conventional positioning techniques. First method is based on a non-carrier VLC based hybrid positioning technique for applications involving of low data rate optical sensing and narrow-range visible light reception from transmitter, and long-range positioning. The second method uses a 4 MHz carrier VLC-based hybrid positioning technique for a high data rate optical sensing and wide-range visible light receiving from transmitter, and mid-range positioning applications. In indoor environments with obstacles where there are long-range 7731.4cm and mid-range 2368cm distances between an observer and a target respectively, the hybrid positioning developed with two design techniques are tested, and the proposed system is verified and analyzed in this paper.

  • The ASTER TIR (thermal infrared radiometer) sensor has 5 spectral bands over 8 to 12 ${\mu}$m region. Rock type classification using the ASTER TIR nighttime data was performed in the Erta Ale range of the Ethiopian Rift Valley. Erta Ale range is the most important axial volcanic chain of the Afar region. The petrographic diversity of lava erupted in this area is very important, ranging from magnesian transitional basalt to rhyolites. We tried to classify the rock types based on the spectral behavior of each volcanic rock types in thermal infrared range and estimated SiO$_{2}$ content with emission data by the ASTER TIR.
