  • Hot-wire anemometers are most commonly used in measuring hood capture velocities due to their accuracy and convenience. But it was questionable that the anemometers being used in the field are accurate enough for the purpose of measurements. To answer this ques tion, a calibration wind tunnel was newly devised and tested. Subsequently, 53 hot-wire anemometers being currently used in the field were tested to evaluate the accuracy of anemometers. The average error was 16.93% while the average errors in the low (0.5~5m/s) and high (5~20m/s) velocity range were 17.40% and 16.45%, respectively. Most of anemometers underestimated the true velocities. It might be due to the contamination of hot-wire, resulting in the slow heat transfer between the sensor and air flow. Astonishingly, 16 of 53 anemometers were out of order due to the malfunctioning of zero adjustment control, power supply, display panel and sensor. It is desirable to calibrate periodically and clean the sensor after using in the dirty environment.

  • An isotope Ir-192, which is used in brachytherapy depends on import in whole quantities. There are a few ways for its activity. measurement using Welltype chamber or the way to rely on authentic decay table of manufacturer. In-air dosimetry using Farmer Chamber, etc. In this paper, let me introduce the way using Farmer chamber which is easier and simple. With the Farmer chamber and source calibration jig, take a measurement the activity of an isotope Ir-192 and compare the value with the value from decay table of manufacturer and check the activity of source. The result of measurement, compared the value from decay table, by ${\pm}2.1\%$. (which belongs to recommendable value for AAPM ${\pm}5\%$ as difference of error range) It is possible to use on clinical medicine. With the increase in use of brachytherapy, the increase of import is essential. And an accurate activity check of source is compulsory. For the activity check of source, it was possible to use Farmer chamber and source calibration jig without additional purchase of Well type chamber.

  • For effective patient treatment in proton therapy, it is therefore important to accurately measure the beam range. For measuring beam range, various researchers determine the beam range by measuring the prompt gammas generated during nuclear reactions of protons with materials. However, the accuracy of the beam range determination can be lowered in heterogeneous phantoms, because of the differences with respect to the prompt gamma production depending on the properties of the material. In this research, to improve the beam range determination in a heterogeneous phantom, we derived a formula to correct the prompt-gamma distribution using the ratio of the prompt gamma production, stopping power, and density obtained for each material. Then, the prompt-gamma distributions were acquired by a multi-slit prompt-gamma camera on various kinds of heterogeneous phantoms using a Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation, and the deduced formula was applied to the prompt-gamma distributions. For the case involving the phantom having bone-equivalent material in the soft tissue-equivalent material, it was confirmed that compared to the actual range, the determined ranges were relatively accurate both before and after correction. In the case of a phantom having the lung-equivalent material in the soft tissue-equivalent material, although the maximum error before correction was 18.7 mm, the difference was very large. However, when the correction method was applied, the accuracy was significantly improved by a maximum error of 4.1 mm. Moreover, for a phantom that was constructed based on CT data, after applying the calibration method, the beam range could be generally determined within an error of 2.5 mm. Simulation results confirmed the potential to determine the beam range with high accuracy in heterogeneous phantoms by applying the proposed correction method. In future, these methods will be verified by performing experiments using a therapeutic proton beam.

  • Simultaneous determination of concentrations for four major components in human blood serum was investigated using a Fourier-transform mid-infrared spectroscopy. Infrared spectra of human blood serum were measured in 8.404 ∼ 10.25 ${\mu}m$ range where the highest absorption peaks of glucose are located. A partial least square (PLS) algorithm was utilized to establish a calibration model for determining total protein, albumin, globulin and glucose levels which are commonly measured metabolites. The standard error of cross validation obtained from our multivariate calibration model was 0.24 g/dL for total protein, 0.15 g/dL for albumin, 0.17 g/dL for globulin, and 6.68 mg/dL for glucose, which are comparable with or meet the criteria for clinical use. The results indicate that the infrared absorption spectroscopy can be used to predict the concentrations of clinically important metabolites without going through a chemical process with a reagent.

  • The equipment of SCARA robot in processing and assembly lines has rapidly increased. In order to achieve high productivity and flexibility, it becomes very important to develop the visual feedback control system with Off-Line Programming System(OLPS). We can save much efforts and time in adjusting robots to newly defined workcells by using OLPS. A proposed visual calibration scheme is based on position-based visual feedback. The calibration program firstly generates predicted images of objects in an assumed end-effector position. The process to generate predicted images consists of projection to screen-coordinates, visible range test, and construction of simple silhouette figures. Then, camera images acquired are compared with predicted ones for updating position and orientation data. Computation of error is very simple because the scheme is based on perspective projection, which can be also expanded to experimental results. Computation time can be extremely reduced because the proposed method does not requirethe precise calculation of tree-dimensional object data and image Jacobian.

  • A watershed model was constructed using the Hydrological Simulation Program Fortran to predict the water quality, especially chlorophyll-a concentraion, at major tributaries of the Nakdong River basin, Korea. The BOD export loads for each land use in HSPF model were estimated at $1.47{\sim}8.64kg/km^2/day$; these values were similar to the domestic monitoring export loads. The T-N and T-P export loads were estimated at $0.618{\sim}3.942kg/km^2/day$ and $0.047{\sim}0.246kg/km^2/day$, slightly less than the domestic monitoring data but within the range of foreign literature values. The model was calibrated at major tributaries for a three-year period (2008 to 2010). The deviation values ranged from -31.5~1.6% of chlorophyll-a, -24.0~2.2% of T-N, and -5.7~34.8% of T-P. The root mean square error (RMSE) ranged from 4.3~44.4 ug/L for chlorophyll-a, -0.6~1.5 mg/L for T-N, and 0.04~0.18 mg/L for T-P, which indicates good calibration results. The operational water quality forecasting results for chlorophyll-a presented in this study were in good agreement with measured data and had an accuracy similar with model calibration results.

  • In this study, Injection rate tests of a Diesel common-rail injector have been performed with injection volume measurement type injection rate test system EMI21 for construction of injector model can be used in an engine calibration mean valued model. The measuring principle of the test system is based on measurement of dispalcement of a movable measurement piston by the volume of fluid released by the injector. From these injection rate test results, the characteristics on shape of instantaneous injection rate and injection fuel amount have been investigated and injection fuel amount calculation equation based on test results has been newly constructed. This equation is very simple and calculation error is less than 5% with test results for wide range injection pressure (200~1800 bar) and injection duration ($200{\sim}1800{\mu}s$) conditions. So, it is anticipated that newly constructed simple injection fuel amount model in this study can be efficiently used on engine calibration and control model.

  • The micro-Kjeldahl method, a common technique for analyzing crude proteins, is time-consuming and dangerous due to the employment of reagents such as sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide. However, a Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectrophotometer analysis can be completed in under a minute after simple pre-processing if data has been gathered using sufficient reference material in advance. Furthermore, the use of safe reagents in this technique ensures the safety of the experimenter and the environment. In addition, a portable FT-NIR spectrophotometer enables real-time measurement at processing or distribution sites and has recently gained popularity. The standard errors of calibration and regression (r2) for the calibration result for estimating the crude protein content of dried laver were 0.9775 and 1.2526, respectively. The standard error of prediction was 1.1814, and the r2 was 0.9303 in the validation results, which was a good level. In the present study, a method for predicting the crude protein content of dried laver using an FT-NIR spectrophotometer in the range of 29%-40% crude protein content has been reported.

  • Purpose: To compare of the accuracy among various measurement procedures of HDR Brachytherapy, and to evaluate the clinical suitability and usefulness of alternative PMMA (polymethylmethacrylateplastics: $C_5H_8O_2$) plate phantom without any additional cost due to the purchase of measuring apparatus. Materials and Methods: We made a comparative study on three types of measuring systems: well type chamber, source calibration jig, and PMMA plate phantom. Farmer type chamber was used for source calibration jig method and PMMA plate phantom method. Measurement was done 5 times each in comparison with the measurement values from manufacturer. Measurement results from experiment were compared with that from the manufacturer which is offered with the source whenever a source is substituted by a new one and evaluate the accuracy of source activity. Results: As a consequence of Ir-192 source measurement using well type chamber, source calibration jig and PMMA plate phantom, RMS (Root Mean Square) values for the relative error are 0.6%, 1.57%, 2.1%, respectively, compared with the data from manufacturer. And the mean errors with standard deviation are given $-0.2{\pm}0.5%$, $0.97{\pm}1.23%$, $-0.89{\pm}1.87%$ respectively. Conclusion: From the results shown by the three types of measurement system (well type chamber, source calibration jig, and PMMA plate phantom), the measurement with well type chamber produced the best accuracy. It turns out that we can also use the alternative system of PMMA plate phantom clinically without purchasing any additional particular apparatus since the system does not exceed the recommendation of AAPM (American Association of Physicists in Medicine), which requires the error range of within ${\pm}5%$.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) automatic calibration algorithm with multi-objective functions by Python, and to evaluate the applicability by applying the algorithm to the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) watershed modeling. The study area is the upstream watershed of Gongdo observation station of Anseongcheon watershed ($364.8km^2$) and the daily observed streamflow data from 2000 to 2015 were used. The PSO automatic algorithm calibrated SWAT streamflow by coefficient of determination ($R^2$), root mean square error (RMSE), Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency ($NSE_Q$), and especially including $NSE_{INQ}$ (Inverse Q) for lateral, base flow calibration. The results between automatic and manual calibration showed $R^2$ of 0.64 and 0.55, RMSE of 0.59 and 0.58, $NSE_Q$ of 0.78 and 0.75, and $NSE_{INQ}$ of 0.45 and 0.09, respectively. The PSO automatic calibration algorithm showed an improvement especially the streamflow recession phase and remedied the limitation of manual calibration by including new parameter (RCHRG_DP) and considering parameters range.
