  • This paper represents generation of time-varying underwater acoustic channels by performing scattering simulation with time-varying ocean surface and Kirchhoff approximation. In order to estimate the time-varying ocean surface, 1D Pierson-Moskowitz ocean power spectrum and Gaussian correlation function were used. The computed scattering coefficients are applied to the amplitudes of each impulse of BELLHOP simulation result. The scattering coefficients are then compared with measured doppler spectral density of signal components which were scattered from ocean surface and the correlation time used in the Gaussian correlation function was estimated by the comparison. Finally, bit-error-rate and channel correlation simulations were performed with the generated time-varying channel based on passive time-reversal communication scenario.

  • Applying microwave, a velocity measurement system has been developed in order to measure the velocity of stream water surface. It's main purpose is the measurement for high velocity of flood water. It is under the developing stage of experimental measurement system. The microwave surface velocity meter uses Doppler effects of microwave. It consists of a radio frequency(RF) part and that of signal processing. Thr RF part has the function of microwave oscillation, reception of reflected wave, and determination of Doppler frequency, etc. Signal processing designates amplification, fast Fourier transform, etx. Various measuring experiments were performed at bridges and a spillway of Taechong re-regulation dam with the microwave velocity meter. Verification test was also made through water tank of ship model test at Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering. It shows 4% error inherent in A/D converter and additional several percentage errors from measurement circumstance. The measuring ranges are from 0.5 to 3.5 m/s. The result shows good linear relationship between carriage velocity and measured velocity, thus proves usefulness as a measuring instrument for flood water velocity. The instrument requires overall re-engineering procedure and number of data should be accumulated and analyzed to treat wind effects and random fluctuations of water surface.

  • This research aims to offer the information required for demand increase on marketing strategy level by investigating Mudeungsan visitors' demographic characteristics and social economical variables. To accomplish this study, the proper analyzing model needs to be applied because a grave error of parameters will be led if regression model appropriate for analyzing the data of a continuous probability variable is applied, in case that dependent variable is a discrete random variable which have a discrete probability distribution. Therefore data analysis was performed with Poisson model. However, as the data was showing an overdispersion, parameter was estimated with the Binomial Poisson model able to cover the problem. As a result, some explanatory variables turned out to be significant such as visitor's age, occupation, preferred season to visit, type of company, five days working, and preferring type of tourism. Author could offer to the national park the information about characteristics of core market revealed and marketing strategy for it, based on those influential variables.

  • Chaotic behavior in motor systems is undesired dynamics in real-time implementation since the speed is oscillated in a wide range and the torque is changed by a random manner. We present an adaptive control approach for time-varying permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) with chaotic phenomenon. We consider that its parameters are changed randomly within certain bounds. First, a nonlinear system model of a PMSM is transformed to derive a nominal linear control strategy. Then, an auxiliary control for compensating real-time control error occurred by system perturbation due to parameter change is designed by using Lyapunov stability theory. Numerical simulation is accomplished for evaluating its efficiency and reliability comparing with the traditional control method. Additionally, we test our control method in real-time motor experiment including a PSoC based drive system to demonstrate its practical applicability.

  • In usual, the discontinuous variance function was estimated nonparametrically using a kernel type estimator with data sets split by an estimated location of the change point. Kang et al. (2000) proposed the Gasser-$M{\ddot{u}}ller$ type kernel estimator of the discontinuous regression function using the adjusted observations of response variable by the estimated jump size of the change point in $M{\ddot{u}}ller$ (1992). The adjusted observations might be a random sample coming from a continuous regression function. In this paper, we estimate the variance function using the Nadaraya-Watson kernel type estimator using the adjusted squared residuals by the estimated location of the change point in the discontinuous variance function like Kang et al. (2000) did. The rate of convergence of integrated squared error of the proposed variance estimator is derived and numerical work demonstrates the improved performance of the method over the exist one with simulated examples.

  • It has been recently emphasized that comprehensive understanding of students' cognitive activities in the process of writing as well as final product is needed in order to develop an effective strategy for science writing. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of writing process in the situation that students wrote a composition in solving the application problem on a science topic. Seven eighth graders selected in the consideration of their science achievement and communication skills were asked to write a composition using think-aloud method. They were also interviewed after their writing work. The analyses of the results indicated that students' writing processes consisted of six distinctive components: generating, organizing, setting, translating, evaluating, and revising. It was also found that the patterns of process components for each student were different in terms of the frequency and the sequence. The patterns of process components were categorized into four types: systematic, tacit planning, trial and error, and random strategies. Educational implications were also discussed.

  • Deterministic design optimization (DO) does not explicitly deal with a variety of factors from inherent randomness and uncertainties. Reliability based design optimization(RBDO) is necessary to use in engineering systems in order to guarantee quality and performance of product. In this paper, design variables are considered as random variables. Standard deviation according to change of design variables have changed as much as coefficient of variation. And, if the standard deviation is error of manufacturing, standard deviation-mean relation is concave form. We obtain reliability index using advanced first order second moment method(AFOSM). This paper is examined by solving two examples and the results are compares with DO, RBDO and suggested RBDO.

  • We present an algorithm for surface reconstruction from the second-derivative data for free-form aspherics, which uses a subaperture scanning system that measures the local surface profile and determines the three second-derivative values at those local sampling points across the free-form surface. The three second-derivative data were integrated to get a map of x- and y-slopes, which went through a second Southwell integration step to reconstruct the surface profile. A synthetic free-form surface 200 mm in diameter was simulated. The simulation results show that the reconstruction error is 19 nm RMS residual difference. Finally, the sensitivity to noise is diagnosed for second-derivative Gaussian random noise with a signal to noise ratio (SNR) of 16, the simulation results proving that the suggested method is robust to noise.

  • This article is to estimate the fishing frequency function in Korean recreational fishery with respect to socio-economic characteristics of anglers. First, the study described the characteristics of the entire angler population on the view points of 9 socio-economic variables. And then, the study divided the total angler population into three groups of in-land, sea, and mixed angler populations in order to investigate the differences in their characteristics. The study could confirm the existence of differences in regions, size of regions, and educational levels between the in - land and the sea angler populations by testing heterogeneity in the frequency table. The fishing frequency function is estimated using Poisson regression model in order to accomodate the count data(non-negative discrete random variable) aspects of the fishing frequency. However, the model specification error is found due to overdispersion of data. The model exhibits the lack of goodness of fit. The negative binomial regression model is adopted to cure the overdispersion of the data as an alternative estimation methodology. Finally, the study can confirm overdispersion does not exist in the model any more and the goodness of fit improved significantly to the reasonable level. The results of estimation of fishing frequency population modeled by the negative binomial regression models are following. The three variables of region, sex, and education have effects on the decision making process of fishing frequency in the case of in-land recreation fishery. On the other hand, the three variables of sex, age, and marriage status do the same job in the case of sea angler population. Among the left-over variables, both income and use of Internet variables now affect on the process in mixed angler population. Finally, the results of whole angler population show that all of the previous variables are proven to be statistically significant due to the summation of data with all three sub-groups of angler population.

  • Stem diameter variability is an essential inventory result that provides useful information in forest management decisions. Little has been done to explore the modelling potentials of standard deviation (SDD) and coefficient of variation (CVD) of diameter at breast height (dbh). This study, therefore, was aimed at developing and testing models for predicting SDD and CVD in stands of Pinus caribaea Morelet (pine) in south west Nigeria. Sixty temporary sample plots of size $20m{\times}20m$, ranging between 15 and 37 years were sampled, covering the entire range of pine in south west Nigeria. The dbh (cm), total and merchantable heights (m), number of stems and age of trees were measured within each plot. Basal area ($m^2$), site index (m), relative spacing and percentile positions of dbh at $24^{th}$, $63^{rd}$, $76^{th}$ and $93^{rd}$ (i.e. $P_{24}$, $P_{63}$, $P_{76}$ and $P_{93}$) were computed from measured variables for each plot. Linear mixed model (LMM) was used to test the effects of locations (fixed) and plots (random). Six candidate models (3 for SDD and 3 for CVD), using three categories of explanatory variables (i.e. (i) only stand size measures, (ii) distribution measures, and (iii) combination of i and ii). The best model was chosen based on smaller relative standard error (RSE), prediction residual sum of squares (PRESS), corrected Akaike Information Criterion ($AIC_c$) and larger coefficient of determination ($R^2$). The results of the LMM indicated that location and plot effects were not significant. The CVD and SDD models having only measures of percentiles (i.e. $P_{24}$ and $P_{93}$) as predictors produced better predictions than others. However, CVD model produced the overall best predictions, because of the lower RSE and stability in measuring variability across different stand developments. The results demonstrate the potentials of CVD in modelling stem diameter variability in relationship with percentiles variables.
