Evaluation of Rainwater Utilization for Miscellaneous Water Demands in Different Types of Buildings Using Geographic Information System

  • This study is an attempt to quantify rainwater utilization and miscellaneous water demand in Tokyo's 23 special wards, the core of the urban area in Tokyo, Japan, in order to elucidate the potential of further rainwater utilization. The rainwater utilization for miscellaneous appropriate water demands, including toilet flushing, air conditioning, and garden irrigation, were calculated for six different types of building: residential house, office, department store, supermarket, restaurant, and accommodation. Miscellaneous water demands in these different types of building were expressed in terms of equivalent rainfall of 767, 1,133, 3,318, 1,887, 16,574, and 2,227 (mm/yr), respectively, compared with 1,528 mm of Tokyo's average annual precipitation. Building types, numbers and its height were considered in this study area using geographic information system data to quantify miscellaneous water demands and the amount of rainwater utilization in each ward. Area precipitation-demand ratio was used to measure rainwater utilization potential for miscellaneous water demands. Office and commercial areas, such as Chiyoda ward, showed rainwater utilization potentials of <0.3, which was relatively low compared to those wards where many residential houses are located. This is attributed to the relatively high miscellaneous water demand. In light of rainwater utilization based on building level, the introduction of rainwater storage mechanisms with a storage depth of 50 mm for six different types of buildings was considered, and calculated as rainfall of 573, 679, 819, 766, 930, and 787 (mm), respectively. Total rainwater utilization using such storage facilities in each building from 23 wards resulted in the retention of 102,760,000 $m^3$ of water for use in miscellaneous applications annually, and this volume corresponded to 26.3% of annual miscellaneous water demand.

제주지역 빗물이용시설의 효율적 개선방안 연구 (A Study on Efficient Improvement Method of Rainwater Utilization Facilities in Jeju Island)

  • This study is to suggest a few efficient ways of rainwater utilization, through monitoring and analyzing 143 rainwater storage systems and 110 artificial recharge systems, which are installed in the recommended facilities by law, among the rainwater harvesting systems in Jeju Island. In the case that catchment facilities are damaged, rainwater could be contaminated by leaves and debris so that the rates of rainwater usages come to be lower. It is possible that contaminated rainwater could contaminate artificial recharge wells or rainwater discharging out of the rainwater harvesting system could result in flood and damage for the downgradient area. For maintaining high quality of rainwater and increasing rainwater utilization rate, it is necessary to install screening facilities and purification plant functioning precipitation and filtration. Also, in order to efficiently preclude the overflowing rainwater exceeding storage capacity, it is recommended to associate rainwater storage tanks with artificial recharge well or infiltration trench facilities.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the rainwater Utilization for the housing complex through the using rainwater, infiltration and detention. This study focused on the following items. 1) Legal basic conditions for the rainwater utilization in Germany 2) Case study on the rainwater management with examples. As the results of this study, it is necessary to implement these rainwater management system in laws, legal norms and technical regulation.

빗물저장조에서 입자의 제거특성 및 운전과 설계시 고려사항 (Particle Removal in a Rainwater Storage Tank, and Suggestions for Operation & Design)

  • A rainwater utilization facility consists of its catchment area, treatment facility, storage tank, supply facility and pipes in general. The rainwater storage tank which occupies the largest area of the facility has been usually considered quantitatively for determining the storage capacity. Hence, there is little information on water quality improvement by sedimentation in a rainwater storage tank in operation. In this study, we measured the rainwater quality in a rainwater storage tank in operation during late spring and summer, and showed water quality improvement of turbidity removal of 25~46% by sedimentation in a rainwater storage tank under a fixed water level without inflow and outflow after runoff ceased. It is necessary to have a considerable distance between the inlet and outlet of the tank and, if possible, it is recommended that the design should allow for an effective water depth of over 3 m and supply rainwater near the water surface. The operation method which increases the retention time by stopping rainwater supply for insuring low turbidity is recommended when the turbidity of rainwater runoff is high. And also more efficient operation and maintenance of the rainwater utilization facility is expected through the tailored design and operation of the facility considering particle removal and behavior.

  • Water shortage as well as water control problems including urban flood and drought have led to developing technologies for rainwater utilization in order to provide a sustainable water supply. However, relatively few works have been done to improve the water quality during rainwater utilization. Therefore, in this study, the characteristics of rainwater were examined in terms of pollutant concentrations and outflow rate. A experimental rain and roof model($1m{\times}1m$) were produced to evaluate wash-off properties of pollutants. And rainfall intensity were standardized in 10 mm/hr, a experimental model roof catchment surface were coated in $TiO_2$ photocatalyst. Samples of runoff rainwater collected from a experimental model were analyzed for physicochemical parameters such as Turbidity, Suspended Solid, EC. The results show that the first flush of rainwater contains substantial amount of contaminants that potentially pollute the whole rainwater. Surface treatment of roof catchment area using $TiO_2$ photocatalyst allowed a better runoff property of rainwater because of its improved hydrophilicity.

빗물 집수 및 저장 시스템 개선과 수질 분석 모니터링 (A Study on the Rainwater Quality Monitoring and the Improvement, Collection and Storage System)

  • 빗물 활용은 건전한 물 순환 개념에서 중요하며, 신도시 개발 등으로 증가되는 불투수면의 증대에 따른 영향을 해소시키는 방법 중의 하나가 되므로 빗물 처리 시스템의 개선을 통한 수질 개선 방안을 연구하였다. 대전서남부지구의 개발 전 빗물 유출계수는 0.40이었으나 개발 후의 유출계수는 0.59로 산정되었다. 필터를 통과한 우수의 Cu, As, Cr, Fe, Mn 등 중금속 함량은 지하수의 중금속 함량보다 양호하였으며, 집수된 빗물의 수질은 경도, 과망간산칼륨소비량, 염소이온, 증발잔류물, 황산이온, 질산성질소 등의 항목에서는 지하수의 수질보다 양호한 것을 보여 주었으며, 중수도 수질기준을 충족시키는 것으로 확인되었다. 100일 이상 장기 저장 시에도 화장실 용수, 조경 용수 등으로 적합하였다. 종전의 빗물집수 시스템에 덮개가 있는 gutter 설치, 적합한 필터 사용 및 저장조의 지하설치 등으로 시스템을 개선하면 집수되는 수질을 100일 정도 양호하게 유지할 수 있는 것을 확인하였다.

  • This study evaluated the economic aspect of the rainwater harvesting facilities by hydrologically analyzing the inflow, rainwater consumption, rainfall loss, tank storage, and overflow time series to derive the net rainwater consumption and the number of days of rainwater available. This study considers several rainwater harvesting facilities in Seoul National University, Korea Institute of Construction Technology and Daejon World Cup Stadium and the results derived are as follows. (1) Increasing the water consumption decreases the number of days of rainwater available. (2) Due to the climate in Korea, a larger tank storage does not increase the amount and the number of days of water consumption during wet season (June to September), but a little in October. (3) Economic evaluation of the rainwater harvesting facilities considered in this study shows no net benefit (private benefit). (5) Flood reduction effect of rainwater harvesting facilities was estimated very small to be about 1% even in the case that 10% of all the basin is used as the rainwater collecting area.

비닐하우스에서 모은 빗물의 수질평가 연구 : 제주도 사례 (Evaluation of the qualities of rainwater collected from the top of vinyl house : A Case Study in Jeju Island)

  • Recently there has been a great deal of interest in promotion of the utilization of rainwater. In this paper, we compared qualities of the rainwater collected from the top of vinyl houses to those of precipitated rainwater itself in Jeju Island. The pH of the collected rainwater was acidic and lower than the precipitated one. As a storm progresses, the pH of the collected water gradually increases. Ranges of EC of the precipitated and collected rainwater were 1-118 and $1-475{\mu}S/cm$. Most of Cl and turbidity values of the collected rainwater were less than 20 mg/L and 20 NTU, while those of the precipitated rainwater were less than 10 mg/L and 5 NTU. Differences in qualities between precipitated and collected rainwater indicate that qualities of the collected rainwater should be changed by the first flush effects, and imply that long term continuous monitoring for the qualities of collected rainwater is essential to quantify the first flush phenomenon more accurately.

지피식물을 이용한 우수저장형 옥상녹화 시스템 및 식물 내건성 평가 (Assessment of Roof-rainwater Utilization System and Drought Resistance of Ground Cover Plants)

  • 이 연구는 2종의 저관리 경량형 옥상녹화시스템(세덤박스와 우수저장형 옥상녹화시스템)을 대상으로 옥상녹화 효과를 평가하기 위해 옥상의 건조한 조건에 잘 견딜 수 있는 내건성 식물 12종을 대상으로 실험을 실시하였다. 실험은 우수저장형 옥상녹화시스템의 기초 연구를 위해 식물의 내건성을 평가하였다. 식물의 내건성 평가를 위해 무관리 조건에서 12종 식물의 건조스트레스의 저항성을 평가하였다. 내건성 평가는 처리 시간에 따라 12종 식물의 상대수분함량의 변화, 전해질 용출 평가, 엽록소 함량의 변화, 토양수분과 건조 스트레스와의 관계를 연구하였다. 건조처리 시간이 길수록 식물들의 상대수분 함량과 엽록소 함량이 감소하면서, 전해질 용출이 증가하였다. 따라서 식물의 내건성 평가 결과, Pulsatilla koreana, Ainsliaea acerifolia를 제외한 10종이 내성이 강하여 옥상녹화에 적용 가능한 종으로 판단되며, 우수저장형 옥상녹화 시스템에서 식물들의 내건성은 식생박스의 식물들보다는 강한 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 우수저장형 옥상녹화 시스템이 식물의 생육과 건조조건에 대한 저항성 증진 효과가 있는 것이 증명되어 도시 옥상녹화에 이용할 수 있다.

공동주택단지의 공간적 특성 분석을 통한 분산식 빗물관리 방향 설정 (A Study on Decentralized Rainwater Management by Analysing the Spacial Properties in Urban Housing Complexes)

  • Until today, rainwater management was processed without disposing the peak discharge, which was due to rainfall, to provide stability against flood damage. In this process, the natural hydrologic cycle changed quickly, and because of this, some problems that could harm human beings and the environment arose. These problems need to be addressed accordingly. One of the proposals was to carry out decentralized rainwater management through a natural hydrologic cycle on site, including utilization, infiltration, detention, and retention of rainwater. This study aims to set the direction of applicable decentralized rainwater management to housing complex in Korea. Therefore, spacial properties in urban housing complexes were analysed such as the impervious area-to-land ratio, the green area-to-land ratio, artificial land-to-land ratio etc. As the result of this study, when a housing complex was small and developed by reconstruction, the impervious area, artificial land, the green area in the artificial land-to-land ratio were high. So, direction of decentralized rainwater management of these housing complexes is available to utilize and detain rainwater. On the other hand, those of big housing complexes in land development district were low relatively. So, direction of decentralized rainwater management of these housing complexes is available to infiltrate and evaporate rainwater.
