  • Organic matters budget in Lake Hoengseong were monthly investigated from April 2009 to November 2009. The intense rainfall occurred at between July and August and the hydrological factors were highly varied during the rainfall season. By the concentrated rainfall, the elevation, influx and efflux were sharply increased and the turbid water was also flowed into the middle water column in Lake. The inflow of turbid water increased the nutrient concentrations in water body and this appears to stimulate of phytoplankton regard as the primary productivity of influx of organic matter. Monthly average concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was generally higher than the particulate organic carbon (POC) concentration in Lake, but Temporal and spatial variation of POC concentration was higher than DOC and the maximum POC concentration was recorded in surface water in August, had the highest phytoplankton biomass. Organic carbon concentration in inflow site was rarely changed during the dry season, but the concentration was rapidly increased by the initial intense rainfall. In organic matters budget, the most of the organic matters was inflowed from the inflow site at rainfall season. Especially, the influx of allochthonous organic matters during the intense rainfall was 72.4% in the total influx organic matters.

  • Seasonal succession of zooplankton community and species composition was studied from 2003 to 2014 in a deep reservoir, Lake Soyang, in monsoon climate region, Korea. Annual precipitation was concentrated more than 70% between June and September and it showed remarkably that seasonal variation in water quality. Seasonal variation of water quality in Lake Soyang appeared to be more significant than annual variations, and the inflow of turbid water during the summer rainfall was the most important environmental factor. Zooplankton sepecies composition in Lake Soyang showed obvious tendency through two periods (May to June and August to October) every year. Small zooplankton (rotifer; Keratella cochlearis, Polyarthra vulgaris) dominated in spring and mesozooplankton such as copepods and crustaceans were dominant in summer and fall. Zooplankton biomass showed the maximum in September after monsoon rainfall, and chlorophyll showed a similar seasonal variation and it showed a high correlation (r=0.45). The increase of zooplankton biomass is considered to be a bottom-up effect due to the increase of primary producers and inflow of nutrients and organic matter from rainfall. In this study, we found that the variation of zooplankton community was affected by rainfall in monsoon climate region and inflow of turbid water was an important environmental factor, which influenced the water quality, zooplankton seasonal succession in Lake Soyang. It was also considered to be influenced by hydrological characteristics of lake and environment of watershed. In conclusion, seasonal succession of zooplankton species composition was the same as the PEG model. But seasonal succession of zooplankton biomass differed not only in the temperate lake but also in the monsoon region.

  • Long term monitoring was conducted to investigate a surface runoff of pollution from urban highway. The monitoring data was collected for 18 rainfall events and was used to correlate pollution load to various parameters, such as rainfall intensity, antecedent dry days and total discharge flow. Runoff coefficient and seasonal variation were also evaluated. The mean runoff coefficient of the highway was 0.823(range; $0.4687{\sim}0.9884$), and wash-off ratio for $COD_{Mn}$ and SS loads was 72.6% and 64.3%, respectively. For the initial rainfall event, the runoff EMC of $COD_{Mn}$ was high in summer and the EMC of SS was high in autumn season. However the seasonal variation of T-N and T-P was not significant. The discharged $COD_{Mn}$-EMC was $147.6\;mg/L{\sim}9.0\;mg/L$ on the generated $COD_{Mn}$-EMC of $98.8\;mg/L{\sim}8.9\;mg/L$. While the generated EMC of SS was in $285.7\;mg/L{\sim}20.0\;mg/L$ and its discharged EMC was in $190.4\;mg/L{\sim}8.0\;mg/L$. EMC of pollutants was not directly related to the first flush rainfall intensity and the antecedent dry days. But the correlation was relatively high between EMC and cumulative runoff flow volume. The trend of EMC was reduced with the cumulative runoff flow volume.

  • Interrelationship between heavy rainfalls and related with low-level jets(LLJ) is analyzed by using fifty cases of heavy rainfall events occurred over the Korean peninsula from 1992 to 2001. Those cases are classified with four synoptical features. There are 32% chances that the low pressure exist in heavy rainfall over than 150 mm per day case by case. Secondly Changma front and front zone account for 28% of all cases. The ratio of marine tropical boundary type and trough type record 22% and 18% respectively. The moist and warm south-westerly winds associated with low-level jets have been induced convective instability and baroclinic instability. Therefore, heavy rainfall due to the approach of a low pressure occurred at September and before Changma. During the period of Changma, this type has been happened heavy rainfall when low pressure and stationary front has vibrated south and north. Changma type has longer the duration time of precipitation than other types. Third type, located with marine Tropical boundary, have mainly rained in August and September. The last trough case locally downpoured in short time with developing cell. The occurrence low-level jets related to heavy rainfall has increased over 12.5 m/s wind speed. The result is that 43 heavy rainfalls out of 50 cases reach peak at the time of maximum precipitation intensity. Also, the variation of wet number and K-index corresponded with the variation of wind speed. It is found that the number of frequency of low-level jets with southwestward direction has been increased and these jets are mainly passed from the southwest toward to the northeast of the Korean peninsula in that time.

  • In this study, two sections with different topographic gradients were in the Hyogyo-ri area, the hydraulic gradients were calculated for each section, and the hydraulic gradient fluctuations according to the topographic gradient and rainfall were analyzed. The variations of the hydraulic gradient within the research site was large in the section with steep topographic gradient and small in the section with gradual topographic gradient. The influence of the variation in hydraulic gradient due to rainfall was high in the section with steep topographic gradient, and low in the section with gradual topographic gradient. Through this study, it was found that the hydraulic gradient fluctuations in unconfined aquifer showed as a complex effect of topographic gradient and rainfall.

  • The climate of Korea has clear rainy and dry season due to seasonal wind. In general, The rainy season in Korea is from early summer through to early fall. And precipitation accounted for more than half of the total annual rainfall in this period. This study is aiming to analysis of variation in saturation flow rate at signalized intersection during rainfall. The range of spatial is urban signalized intersections in Seoul and temporal is rainfall or ideal condition in daylight. Traffic data are collected through CCTV of Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, and on-site video recordings directly. Weather condition data are collected from the Korea Meteorological Administration. In addition, the value of saturation headway and saturation flow rate, in rainfall condition, are derived through video frame analysis. As a results of analysis, decrease of saturation flow rate and increase of saturation headway during rainfall were confirmed by comparison with non-rainfall. The higher rainfall rate is, the more decreased saturation flow rate at the intersections. Rainfall rate is divided three area by the results of statistical test, and saturation flow rate decrease 7%, 17%, 21%, respectively.

  • This study evaluates the variation of estimation error of area-average rainfall due to rainfall seasonality. Both the cases considering and not considering the spatial correlation are compared to derive the characteristics of estimation error. Similar cases with different accumulation time without considering the rainfall seasonality are also investigated. This study was applied to the Geum-river basin with total 28 rain gauge measurements haying more than 30 years of daily rainfall measurements. As results of the study we found that: (1) The absolute estimation error of monthly area-average rainfall show strong seasonality like the total rainfall amount. However, the relative estimation error normalized by its mean was estimated to have similar values about 5 to 8% except January and December. (2) The relative estimation error of annual area-average rainfall estimated was found to have the estimation error about 3% of its annual mean. (3) However, the relative estimation error normalized by the standard deviation remains almost the same for both monthly and annual rainfall amounts, which was estimated about 11% of its standard deviation. (4) Finally, the estimation error without considering the spatial correlation was found to become almost twice the estimation error with considering the spatial correlation.

  • Most hydrological analysis such as probability rainfall and rainfall time distributions have typically carried out based on hourly rainfall and rainfall - runoff analysis have carried out by applying different periods of rainfall time distribution and probability rainfall. In this study, to quantify the change of design flood due to the data type (hourly and minutely rainfall data) and the probability rainfall and application of different data period to the rainfall time distribution, probability rainfall is calculated by point frequency analysis according to data type and period and rainfall time distribution was calculated by Huff's quartile distributions. In addition, the change analysis of design flood was carried out by rainfall - runoff analysis applying different data periods of design rainfall time distribution. and probability rainfall. As a result, rainfall analysis using minute rainfall data was more accurate and effective than using hourly rainfall data. And the design flood calculated by applying different data period of rainfall time distribution and probability rainfall made a large difference than by applying different data type. It is expected that this will contribute to the hydrological analysis using minutely rainfall.

  • Jeju island is one of the highest rainfall areas in the Korean peninsular. However, variation in rainfall amount is much great with years, which resulted in substantial variation in annual groundwater recharge and sustainable yield. Therefore, to cope with groundwater hazard including sea water intrusion and water level decline in accordance with successive extreme drought, Jeju province established a stepwise action system, in which management of representative monitoring wells and corresponding actions to water level conditions was enforced. In this study, rainfall and groundwater monitoring data were analyzed to determine management groundwater level on Jeju island. First, rainfall data for last 30 years were analyzed, which yielded a lower limit of rainfall at a confidence level of 99% as a basis rainfall. Only when the rainfall less than the basis rainfall was sustained over 3 months, the water levels were targeted for the analysis. For the water level data selected using the above criteria, the lower limit of 99% confidence interval was determined as a reference groundwater level. Finally, some ratios of reference groundwater level was determined as stepwise management groundwater level on Jeju island.
