  • Recently the railway safety is very important issue in Korea because there are lots of changes like the separation of operation and facility of national rail network, the inauguration of high speed train and Daegu subway fire accident. Railway safety management system is based on risk assessment of rolling stocks, electrical system, signaling, operation & maintenance and human element. With this process, railway risk will be reduced as low as reasonably acceptable level. Through risk assessment on accident data, this study predicted the current risk level of railway electrical system and presented the proper safety ensuring measures.

  • There are ATC (Automatic Train Control), ATP (Automatic Train Protection), ATS (Automatic Train Stop) and ATO (Automatic Train Operation) etc. in train control systems. As various train control systems are installed according to sections, on-board signaling systems are installed to apply to the section. Hence, operation flexibility of trains is decreased. In other words, when trains are operated in the section where other train control systems are used, the on-board signaling systems are changed. Recently, a study on the combined on-board signaling system has been researched to solve this problem. The combined on-board signaling system consists of ATC, ATP and ATS device. Because the train control systems are vital, it needs to design the combined on-board signaling system by using k out of n system. In this paper, when k out of n system is applied in the combined on-board signaling system, the reliability and loss cost are analyzed by using failure rate in each device. Hence, the ideal number of systems is presented according to the number of outputs.

  • Harmonic current originating from electric locomotives can be magnified due to the impedance characteristics of power supply circuit and bring about various problems. That is, electromagnetic interference with communication lines, operational trouble in signaling, overheat and/or vibration in power capacitor, mis-operation in protection relay and so on. Therefore, the exact assessment of the harmonic current flow must be undertaken at design and planning stage for the electric traction systems. For these reasons, this study propose a new approach to model and to analyse traction power feeding system focused on system response to current and voltage harmonic(PART I ). Measurements of harmonics are also performed for railway power supply systems under normal operation. Spectrum and distortion analyses in measurement data are variously described in PART II

  • Recently the design of railway systems have been performed, based on the analysis of operational conditions and service targets, it is to optimize the effectiveness and efficiency of system operation. Many RAMS requirements have been developed to transform operation conditions into system design characteristics. However, our railway industry has not actived the application of RAMS into system design performance. According to short of RAMS application, many technologies that have been developed are not only applied the existing systems that is operating, but also have not succeed to apply for new systems. In order to design the effective and efficient railway systems that are optimized to operation conditions and service targets, a systems approach and RAMS management are necessary in railway development, operation and maintenance. Therefore, in this study, the RAMS performance requirement design methods are discussed. the allocation methods from system level to each devices of subsystems.

  • To assure the safety of urban railway train, it is necessary to observe the specified driving principles under an essential condition during running on tracks. These principles arises from a great deal of experience for a long time and include safe distance between trains, the railway signaling, block system, regular block of the highest priority and driving prohibition of simple railway vehicle in the main track, etc. Therefore, it is important to apply these principles to domestic urban railway driving regulations and railway vehicle driving regulations. However, domestic urban railway administrator established his own operation rules within the regulation. In this study, domestic urban railway administration's own rules are examined and the appropriate driving regulation on the safe driving principles is proposed.

  • This paper proposes a CBTC wayside signaling system, which redeems existing track-circuit-based ones by using movement authorities mixed with logical block and moving block. Only one train can be entered into the logical block or the route for existing wayside signaling system. Applying moving block for CBTC system enables the train to get nearer to the preceding one, because its protection mechanism uses train's safe boundary, not fixed block unit. By narrowing the existing route set to switch machine and applying the moving block beyond that area, more than one train can enter into one route area. This paper shows that the efficient train control, i.e. shortening the headway, is possible using the moving block mixed with logical block in wayside signaling system.

  • The railway signaling system has evolved to maximize its safety and maintainability based on the experiences in the construction and operation of railway systems. The newly developed systems was established to cope with the changes in an operating environment. In the process of a transition to the new system, both the existing ATS (Automatic Train Stop) and new ATP/ATO (Automatic Train Protection/Automatic Train Operation) systems are operating simultaneously in parallel. In this situation, modifications of the conditions of the interlocking diagram and logic are necessarily required on the existing ATS systems due to the frequent improvements in signaling equipment. This paper reports the enhancement of safety and operational efficiency of the system through an improvement of the security and the interlocking conditions of the existing ATS systems. The independent display of signals for each track was ensured to avoid giving the effect of On/Off signals for the selected track on the opposite side, and the security was improved by adjusting the position and interlocking conditions. In addition, the increased traffic density of railway systems was achieved by removing the unnecessary conditions and detailed signal display, which resulted in enhanced operational efficiency.

  • In this paper, the inductive power collector using electromagnetic induction for vehicle such as the electric railway vehicle system is suggested and some ideas for power collector design to improve the power transfer performance are presented. The inductive power of secondary part is related to amount of linked flux to secondary part by the length of air-gap, which is expected by such a system parameter as mutual inductance. This paper will study for the transfer characteristic of power from input to output and equation including mutual inductance. And also, effect of leakage inductance variation of inductive power collector according to structure of winding was considered.
