This study analyzed the transit services with respect to transit service measures such as the load factor representing number of passengers between stops, dwelling time, and operational speed based on transit smart card data recorded in 2009. A case study on the local bus line 7024 connecting Seoul railway station to evaluate bus services at passenger perspectives was accomplished. From the results, we found that the dwelling time was not affected by the number of passengers which is because the tagging patterns are different among passengers. The operational speed was analyzed by calculating the average speed of the bus route and the speed of each bus stops based on dwelling time. Interestingly, calculating operation speed based on the transit smart card data is the first time effort ever made and this means that it is not necessary to observe travel speed of bus and railway at a field level any more. we hope that this study will be a basis of evaluation of transit services purely based on the transit smart card data and help to make better transit services for passengers and operators as well.

It is customary that tendons and sectional dimensions are calibrated and tendon forces are applied at once at the initial stage to keep the subsequent stresses occuring at different loading stages within the allowable stresse in prestressed concrete (PSC) bridge design. However, this traditional tensioning method usually results in a too conservative sectional depth in view of ultimate capacity of a girder. A new design method which can realize the reduction of sectional depth of PSC girder is theoretically suggested in this study. Tendons are tensioned twice at different loading stages: the initial stage and the stage after fresh slab concrete is cast. It can be shown that according to this technique, sectional depth can be significantly reduced and larger span can be realized compared to traditional ones. In this paper, there is an example about the design of bridge by means of new PSC design theory, having a longer span than a existing railway bridge. Also, a new method by continuous tendon profiles is presented to be continuous a IPC bridge.
There has been fast progress in economy in Korea derived by a consecutive five-year plan program for economic development started in the early 1960's. In the field of transportation, rapid changes in the technological environment of transportation and communication have brought a revolution of the transport system, of which inter-modal transportation through containerisation is typical. Because of the rapidly growing traffic volumes of cargo, especially container traffic, and lack of investment into transport infrastructure in the past, both road and railway are beyond their capacity. As a result, the public-road network has suffered a serious congestion problem. For instance, in relation to the corridor between Seoul and Pusan, today, it takes about 14 hours for the journey of container trailer through Kyongbu Expressway, for which it used to take only 7 hours in 1986. For the railway, though the congestion problem is not very serious compared with the road sector, a shortage of capacity on certain main lines has emerged as a problem as railway traffic has increased. Furthermore, the further expansion of the system in near future is difficult due to burden of higher construction the cost. Unlike these two modes, coastal shipping, which has been paid relatively less attention for commodity transport in Korea, shows no constraint in this respect. In addition, it is the most cost efficient mode of transport. This work therefore aims to make a proposal for the alternative inland transportation mode, which is to promote the coastal transport of container. Three obstructing factors for the promotion of the coastal transport are investigated and some solutions for those are suggested as follows : First, it appears to be essential to provide exclusive ports for the coastal shipping, that comply with simplification, specialization and rationalization. The optimum size of berths on the exclusive ports in Pusan port is estimated as 16-20. We found that it needs periodical study and publicity on the advantages from the adoption of the coastal mode. Inducing competition in the coastal shipping market is also necessary. For the supply of the fleet in the coastal shipping, chartering of the surplus ships in the oversea shipping is found to be more desirable than new shipbuilding. Second, to solve the fragmentation of the companies which wish to participate in the coastal transport, government has to implement the subsidy policy. The encouragement of participation of the shipping lines engaging in Korea-Japan run and Korea-East South Asia run, into coastal shipping also needs to be considered cautiously. Third, simplification of the document for entry in ports is needed for rational coastal shipping management. We can use B/L (Bill of Lading) for coastal shipping as a prerequisite to get the indemnity by P & I Club. The reduction of the government controls on entering and leaving the ports also needs.
Quick-hardening track (QHT) is a construction method which is used to change from old ballast track to concrete track. Sufficient time for construction is important, as the construction should be done during operational breaks at night. Most of the time is spent on exchanging the ballast layer. If it is possible to apply the ballast non-exchange type of quick-hardening track, it would be more effective to reduce the construction time and costs. In this paper, pouring materials with high permeability are suggested and a construction method involving a layer separation pouring process considering the void condition is introduced in order to develop ballast non-exchange type of QHT. The separate pouring method can secure the required strength because optimized materials are poured into the upper layer and the lower layer for each void ratio condition. To ensure this process, a rheology analysis was conducted on the design of the pouring materials according to aggregate size, the aggregate distribution, the void ratio, the void size, the tortuosity and the permeability. A polymer series was used as the pouring material of the lower layer to secure the void filling capacity and for adhesion to the fine-grained layer. In addition, magnesium-phosphate ceramic (MPC) was used as the pouring material of the upper layer to secure the void-filling capacity and for adhesion of the coarse-grained layer. As a result of a mechanics test of the materials, satisfactory performance corresponding to existing quick-hardening track was noted.
Parametric study has been conducted to calculate the capacity of vacuum pump system that will be used to maintain the pressure of the tube system under atmosphere level. Recently many railroad researchers pay attention to the tube train system as one of the super high speed transportation system. To achieve the ultra super high speed, the inside of tube system should be maintained the low pressure level. In the low pressure environment, it is well known that air resistance of train is drastically decreased. Vacuum pump system will be used to make the low pressure level of tube system, exhaust the leakage air and supplement additional vacuum pumping. Qualitative and quantitative study has been conducted to review the effects of major parameters concerned with the capacity of vacuum pump system. As a results of these studies, we get the lump capacity of vacuum pump for various parameters. These results can be used to analyse the effects of the reduction of air resistance.
The objectives of power system operations are to preserve system stability and reliability as well as to supply proper electric power. For an activation of these objectives, voltage and reactive power should be considered. There are a number of types about reactive power sources, and an insertion of shunt capacitor banks are one of the method to support bus voltage adjacent. This paper includes the design procedure to determine the hybrid type capacitor bank configurations on power system to improve stability and reliability. This procedure includes the capacitor bank capacity calculation, reactor type selection, and reactor capacity calculation. The total capacity calculation of capacitor bank is based on the reactive power margin which is calculated through system studies such as, contingency analysis and Q-V analysis. In the second step, the reactor type and its capacity can be determined through the harmonic analysis. This paper shows that the harmonics are decreased by the proposed hybrid type capacitor bank, especially 5th and 7th harmonics.
This paper concerns the load carrying capacity of back-to-back reinforced soil wall for use in roadway and railway construction. Two test conditions, designed with due consideration of the FHW A design guideline, were first developed and a number of cases having different reinforcement lengths were tested under a surchage loading until failure. The results indicated that for cases in which two sides of reinforcements do not overlap, the wall behavior was similar to those of single wall. For cases in which the reinforcements overlap each other, on the other hand, the load carrying capacity of the wall significantly decreased when reinforced with reinforcement layers having lengths less than 50% of the wall height.
The railway is widely used to transport passengers and freight due to its punctuality and large transport capacity. The recent remarkable development in construction technology enables various subsea railway tunnels for continent-continent or continent-island connectivity. In Korea, design and construction experience is primarily based on the successful completion of the Boryeong subsea tunnel (2021) and the Gadeok subsea tunnel (2010). However, frequent earthquakes with diverse magnitudes, globally induced and continuously increased the awareness of seismic risks and the frequency of domestic earthquakes. The effect of an earthquake on the subsea tunnel is very complicated. However, ground conditions and seismic waves are considered the main factors. This study simulated four ground types of 3-dimensional numerical models, such as soil, rock, composite, and fractured zone, to analyze the effect of ground type and seismic wave. A virtual subsea railway shield tunnel considering external water pressure was modeled. Further, three different seismic waves with long-term, short-term, and both periods were studied. The dynamic analyses by finite difference method were performed to investigate the displacement and stress characteristics. Consequently, the long-term period wave exhibited a predominant lateral displacement response in soil and the short-term period wave in rock. The artificial wave, which had both periodic characteristics, demonstrated predominant in the fractured zone. The effect of an earthquake is more noticeable in the stress of the tunnel segment than in displacement because of confining effect of ground and structural elements in the shield tunnel.

Based on the data accumulated through EMU fault management, this paper examines the reliability of old railway car parts and proposes measurements to improve safety. Subway Line 7 of the Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporation, auxiliary power unit (Static Inverter) of the EMU second version is a core equipment to supply power to various room-service units in cars and make an effect directly on passenger satisfaction. To analyze the pattern of failure throughout the field data over a long period of time, this analysis of statistics and reliability considers the operating environment and stress factors. This statistical analysis presents the correlation between failure and the temperature stress factors related to frequent failure occurring intensively in summer. In addition, throughout the analysis of the life of the IGBT inverter, the effect of the temperature stress factor was observed before and after the repair. As a result of an analysis of the optimal operating conditions considering two variations of EMU, such as variable load and outside temperature, a difference in the cooling capacity between the optimal operating conditions and frequent failure conditions was observed. Based on this analysis, this paper suggests a way to minimize cooling capacity difference for the optimal operational conditions.

This paper presents the results of plate load test and dynamic load test performed to evaluate the performance of geocell where it is used to reinforce soft subgrade for high-speed railroad. Efficacy of geocell was observed in increase in bearing capacity of subgrade and reduction of thickness of reinforced sub-ballast. Plate load tests were carried out at four different places with varying foundation soil strength as a function of number of geocell layer, type of filler material, thickness of cover soil, and the presence of non-woven geotextile. Dynamic load tests were performed in a laboratory. The test soil chamber consists of, from the bottom, 50 cm thick clayey soil, one layer of geocell filled with crushed stone, 10 cm thick crushed stone cover, reinforced sub-ballast of varying thickness, 35 cm thick ballast. This configuration was determined based on the results of numerical analysis and plate load tests. For each set of the dynamic load tests, loads were applied more than 80,000 times. One layer of geocell underlying a 10 cm thick cover soil led to an increase in bearing capacity three to four times compared to a crushed stone layer of the same thickness substituted for the geocell and cover soil layer. Given the test conditions, the thickness of reinforced sub-ballast can be reduced by approximately 35 cm with the presence of geocell.
